Book Mocedades de Rodrigo

Download or read book Mocedades de Rodrigo written by Leonardo Funes and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitive edition of epic poem recording the Cid's youthful deeds. Mocedades de Rodrigo, telling of the youthful deeds of Rodrigo Diaz, the Cid, is a rare surviving (incomplete) epic poem from medieval Spain. Its importance cannot be overestimated. The present edition bears witness to theeditor's long engagement with the text, and will rapidly be accepted as the definitive edition. It includes a paleographic transcription of the manuscript (Crónica rimada), a critical edition of the poem reworked by a pro-Palentinian cleric (Refundición de las Mocedades de Rodrigo), and a conjectural reconstruction of the original epic (Gesta de las Mocedades de Rodrigo). This editorial work is rounded off by a complete study of the poem's characteristics as a product of the late epic tradition in Castile, the process of its composition, its narrative structure, ideology and contextual inscription. Accompanying literary analysis constitutes an exhaustive commentary on the poem, drawing on modern scholarship and providing new insights. Book The Spanish Ballad in English

Download or read book The Spanish Ballad in English written by Shasta M. Bryant and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an introduction to an important branch of Spanish literature—the romance, or ballad. Although a great many of these poems have been translated into English by various authors, they are not generally known nor easily accessible. Collected here for the first time in a single volume is a broad and representative sampling of romances in translation that encompasses historical ballads (including those about Spain's greatest folk hero, el Cid), Moorish ballads, and ballads of chivalry, love, and adventure. For the collection, Shasta M. Bryant has written a perceptive commentary and critique in which he discusses the individual poems and compares the translation with the original; both texts are presented to facilitate comparison. For those who wish to pursue their reading further there is an index of romances that have been translated into English, along with the names of the translators. Although the text has been written with the non-specialist in mind, this book will be equally valuable for students of comparative literature and of medieval Spain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Translation judges for the National Book Awards--Richard Miller, Alastair Reid, Eliot Weinberger--cited Clayton Eshleman and Jose Rubia Barcia's translation of Cesar Vallejo's The Complete Posthumous Poetry as follows: "This, the first National Book Award to be given to a translation of modern poetry, is a recognition of Clayton Eshleman's seventeen-year apprenticeship to perhaps the most difficult poetry in the Spanish language. Eshleman and his present collaborator, Jose Rubia Barcia, have not only rendered these complex poems into brilliant and living English, but have also established a definitive Spanish test based on Vallejo's densely rewritten manuscripts. In recreating this modern master in English, they have also made a considerable addition to poetry in our language."

Book excerpt: Based primarily on previously unpublished documents, the studies assembled here in this first selection by Frank D'Accone set the background for the musical efflorescence that occurred in Florence in the later 15th century and for the emergence in the early 16th century of a new Florentine school of composers. He traces the origins and development of musical chapels at the Cathedral and Baptistery, and the growth of musical establishments at several other churches such as the Santissima Annunziata, Santa Trinita and San Lorenzo.
