Book excerpt: The plight of animal individuals and species inflicted on them by human activity is a global problem with detrimental repercussions for all humans and for the entire planet. This book gives an overview of the most important international legal regimes that directly address and indirectly affect animals. It covers species conservation treaties, notably the international whaling regime, the farm animal protection rules of the EU, international trade law and the international law of armed conflict. It also analyses the potential for an international regime of animal rights. Finding that international law creates more harm than good for animals, the auther suggests progressive treaty interpretation, treaty making and animal interest representation to close the animal welfare gap in international law. A body of global animal law needs to be developed, accompanied by critical global animal studies.

Pedro Sanchez himself, as a product of Padre Martinez's coeducational school in Taos, New Mexico, credits his mentor for his success in his career and life as did many of his other students. This Spanish and English edition features an introduction by Myra Ellen Jenkins, Ph.D., a former New Mexico state historian. Ray John de Aragón, a leading scholar on Padre Martinez and the authority on his life and work, translated the original Spanish text of the Sanchez book into English. De Aragón has a Masters in American Studies and has been a keynote speaker at public and historical conferences on Padre Martinez whom he has researched extensively. He is the recipient of numerous awards and is the author of "Padre Martinez and Bishop Lamy," "The Legend of La Llorona," and "Brothers of the Light, The Penitentes of New Mexico," all from Sunstone Press.

Este estudio, fundamentalmente jurídico, se apoya en distintas disciplinas como la filosofía, la biología, la sociología, la primatología o la etología evolutiva. Esta publicación llega en un momento muy oportuno. El artículo 13 del Tratado de Funcionamiento de la Unión Europea califica a los animales como «seres sensibles», lo cual obliga a adaptar nuestras leyes civiles a esta nueva realidad. Si bien en 2017 se aprobó por unanimidad una proposición de Ley a tal fin, las sucesivas vicisitudes parlamentarias han impedido su tramitación. Tras el nombramiento de un Director General de Derechos de los Animales el 29 de enero de 2020, parece que dicha tramitación se retomará en breve. El autor ha pretendido superar la mera reflexión u opinión y aportar criterios objetivos que sirvan para encauzar un debate jurídico aún por construir. El lector juzgará si es alcanzable este propósito, si bien sería satisfactorio si la lectura sirviera para concienciarle de la necesidad de proteger, también en las leyes civiles, a nuestros compañeros de viaje, los animales, de ese gran depredador en el que se ha convertido hoy el ser humano.
