Book excerpt: L’ageism (termine inglese per definire l’invecchiamento della popolazione aziendale) è una parola tuttora sconosciuta, a dispetto degli studi e delle proiezioni demografiche che dimostrano in maniera concorde che il tema dell’invecchiamento sarà sempre più centrale. Il tema dell’invecchiamento della popolazione è solitamente affrontato in riferimento al perseguimento dell’equilibrio economico-finanziario dei sistemi di welfare. Pochi sembrano accorgersi dell’impatto che l’invecchiamento della popolazione aziendale ha. Infatti il rapido invecchiamento della popolazione funge da acceleratore del problema e costringe le aziende ad affrontarlo, adeguando l’organizzazione del lavoro alle necessità peculiari di una forza lavoro più anziana. Oggi le aziende sembrano fare molto poco, quasi ignorare il problema/opportunità: l’attenzione dei più, quando si manifesta, sembra concentrarsi esclusivamente sulle politiche di assunzione, in omaggio alle normative anti age-discrimination (discriminazione in base all’età) che incominciano a fare capolino nelle legislazioni dei Paesi Occidentali (USA in testa). In realtà, una risposta efficace alle sfide poste da una forza lavoro matura non può concentrarsi solo su quest’aspetto, ma deve includere l’intero spettro dei sistemi operativi di gestione delle risorse umane, così da configurare una vera e propria politica del personale age-sensitive, che spazia dagli interventi in tema di carriera (anche per i lavoratori a «fine carriera», sebbene a prima vista sembri paradossale), alla formazione, alla valutazione, all’orario di lavoro, alle azioni di retention e alle ricadute pensionistiche. Dunque sembra configurarsi la necessità di costruire delle politiche del personale caratterizzate da specifici sistemi di gestione per i lavoratori più anziani. In questo senso possiamo prospettare per il prossimo futuro anche delle politiche di age-management, che andranno ad arricchire la gestione delle risorse umane di nuovi contenuti e di nuove sensibilità. Questo volume analizza il tema affrontando in una prima parte l’invecchiamento della popolazione con un focus particolare sula longevità attiva e sulle politiche di Welfare in Europa. Quindi affronta temi specifici della vita della popolazione matura in azienda, con un focus particolare sui sistemi operativi aziendali. Da questa trattazione deriva un modello di gestione del age management strettamente legato al modello di gestione delle risorse umane che punti alla creazione di vantaggio competitivo tramite la gestione dell’età. Book excerpt: Regional mortality differences are one dimension of health inequalities, but its trends and determinants in Germany are widely unknown. This book examines and illustrates patterns of regional mortality in Germany—with focus on small-area differentials—and their changes over time. It identifies explanatory factors at individual and regional level. Mortality differences between eastern and western Germany exist, but small-area mortality differentials are often greater. Though the main spatial mortality patterns remain, this study provides evidence that some distinct changes in the small-area mortality patterns in Germany—especially among women—occurred within a short period of time. Mortality inequalities at younger ages and in behavior-related causes as well as differences in socioeconomic conditions contribute strongly to regional mortality differences in Germany. The book shows that the complex interplay between individual- and regional-level mortality risk factors requires a multidimensional approach to reduce regional mortality inequalities.

During the last decades, a lot of innovations have been conceived or introduced in the Mediterranean area, allowing livestock systems to remain competitive. The book looks at two main issues: firstly, it gives an updated review on the main innovations that significantly changed the activities of livestock production in the Mediterranean area in the recent past. Secondly, the focus lies on the extent to which these innovations improve the efficiency, ensure the socio-cultural basis or reduce the environmental impact of livestock systems. One major finding is a new vision of innovating systems based on the distinction between regulated innovation (when aims are fixed) and innovative design (when aims are questioned). Innovations reported in the book are dealing with a set of concerns. They concern the production techniques, the work organization, the equipment and infrastructures, the collective features for selection, reproduction, feeding or sanitary devices. They also concern the local organization such as product labelling, new dynamics around local breeds, collective rules for supply basin or approaches of new products for new markets. More recently, some innovations focus on environmental impacts of livestock production, due to an increasing consciousness of those kinds of problems. In the final part of the book, a round table copes with a crucial question: are traditions in Mediterranean livestock activities to be considered an obstacle or a source of innovation? This book provides a set of updated information and knowledge useful for researchers, students, extension services and policy-makers in the field of animal science.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to enhance the cultural dimension of sustainable development and particularly focuses on minor historic centers and their natural and rural landscapes. In a society becoming ever more globalized, without territorial restrictions in the production of goods and able to reproduce in China the goods and product characteristic of South American crafts (to mention just two extremes), the only element that can still be contextualized is heritage identity: the result of close integration between cultural assets, intangible assets and settled communities. Thus, heritage identity is one of the few elements, together with natural resources, which has the potential for economic development that is still firmly rooted in places and local populations. These towns are often the centerpiece of urban landscapes and geographical areas with original features, not always but often as individual places within networks of minor historical centers linked by shared history, traditions and/or natural elements (rivers, forests, river systems or other natural elements). They are outside the major tourist networks, even if now there is a budding interest in the touristic exploitation of these environments. So, they are the right places to pursue a sustainable and local development with a cultural perspective. This book is a product of the VIVA_EASTPART project (Valorisation and Improving of management of Small Historic Centres in the eastern PARTnership region), under the EU-funded “ENPI Eastern Partnership” program. It complements the more practically-focused work that is in production from this group, more focused on empirical approaches to the development of minor historic centers of the nations involved. Though the book has been influenced by this research and working experience, the authors are solely responsible for the content and opinions presented.

Book excerpt: We explore the impact of major labor and product market reforms on current account dynamics using a new “narrative” database of major changes in employment protection for regular workers and product market regulation for non-manufacturing industries covering 26 advanced economies over the past four decades. Our main finding is that product market deregulation is associated with a weakening of the current account, while labor market deregulation is associated with an improvement. These effects are transitory and driven by both saving and investment responses. Labor and product market reforms both have a more positive impact on the current account balance when implemented under weak macroeconomic conditions. Our results are broadly consistent with predictions from recent DSGE models with endogenous producer entry and labor market frictions.
