Book excerpt: I spent my whole life thinking that magic had passed me by. Boy, was I wrong. Becoming an uber-powerful witch overnight isn't nearly as much fun as it sounds. Controlling unfamiliar magic is hard. Really, really hard. Adding to the level of difficulty is the fact that dead bodies keep showing up. Okay, so there's only been two so far, but in a small town like Wind's Crossing, that's a lot. Our town doesn't have all that many living people either. At least this time it isn't my family the police have in their crosshairs. Unfortunately, that isn't the good news you'd think it was. This time the prime suspects were my good friends Mabel Morgan and Tommy Hill. And no way was I letting them take the fall. Un-Familiar Magic is Book Three in the Accidental Familiar Series. It is highly recommended to read this series in order as there are major spoilers in the later books. This is a full-length, Paranormal Cozy Mystery featuring the Gemstone Coven witches... and their familiars.

Book Familiars in Witchcraft

Download or read book Familiars in Witchcraft written by Maja D'Aoust and published by Destiny Books. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive exploration of familiars and their many forms and powers • Explores witch’s familiars in folklore, shamanic, and magical traditions around the world, including Africa, India, Scandinavia, ancient Greece, and China • Explains how familiars are related to shamanic power animals and how the witch draws on her personal sexual energy to give this creature its power • Examines the familiar in alchemical, Hermetic, and Egyptian magical literature, including instructions for procuring a supernatural assistant Exploring the history and creation of a “witch’s familiar,” also known as a spirit double or guardian spirit, Maja D’Aoust shows how there is much more to these supernatural servant spirits and guardians than meets the eye. She reveals how witches are not the only ones to lay claim to this magician’s “assistant” and examines how the many forms of witch’s familiars are well known in folklore throughout Europe and America as well as in shamanic and magical traditions around the world, including Africa, India, and China. The author explains how familiars are connected with shapeshifting and how the classic familiars of medieval witchcraft tradition are related to the power animals and allies of shamanic practices worldwide, including animal guardian spirits of Native American traditions and the daimons of the ancient Greeks and Romans. She examines the fetch spirit, also known as the fylgia in Scandinavian tradition, and how the witch or sorcerer draws on their personal sexual energy to give this creature its power to magnetize and attract what it was sent to retrieve. She looks at incubus, succubus, doubles, doppelgangers, and soul mates, showing how familiars can also adopt human forms and sometimes form romantic or erotic attachments with the witch or shaman. Reviewing alchemical, Hermetic, and Egyptian magical literature, including the nearly forgotten alchemical works of Anna Kingsford, D’Aoust explores their instructions for procuring the attention of a supernatural assistant as well as an extensive description of the alchemical wedding and how this ritual joins the magician and familiar spirit into a single unified consciousness. Exploring fairy familiars, she reveals how a practitioner can establish a “marriage” with a totemic plant or tree spirit, who, in return, would offer teachings about its medicinal and visionary powers. Delving deeply into the intimate relations of humanity with the spirit world, D’Aoust shows how forming connections with living forces other than human enables us to move beyond the ego, expand our magical abilities, as well as evolve our conscious awareness.

Book Surgery An Unfamiliar History

Download or read book Surgery An Unfamiliar History written by Nigel Keith Maybury and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating account of surgery that throws light on forgotten and unknown aspects of its practice from antiquity to the present. It illuminates the rare periods of progress and also explains why there were lengthy times when no original operations were undertaken. Maybury has achieved this by identifying the time and place when each operation was first undertaken. The first of these was the trephination of the skull in Peru twelve thousand years ago, presumably to exorcise evil spirits. This operation over several thousand years reached Europe where Hippocrates described and rationalised it to treat head injuries, it is still practiced today and is the forerunner of each subsequent original operation. The golden ages of surgery took place in Ancient Greece and India and 1,300 years later in Western Europe and the USA. Between these periods, no original operations took place. Maybury explains why this happened and reveals the Greek theory that dominated surgery for over 2,000 years. He describes the passage and translation of the Greek manuscripts and their acceptance in the Arabian Empires and how in turn the Arabic versions strongly influenced Italy and then Western Europe. He also tells of the Edict of Tours of 1163 that devastated surgery and took 700 years to rectify and also the extraordinary modern era when all the tissues of the body were finally operated upon and very much more.

Book Unfamiliar Selves in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Unfamiliar Selves in the Hebrew Bible written by Reed Carlson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirit possession is more commonly associated with late Second Temple Jewish literature and the New Testament than it is with the Hebrew Bible. In Unfamiliar Selves in the Hebrew Bible, however, Reed Carlson argues that possession is also depicted in this earlier literature, though rarely according to the typical western paradigm. This new approach utilizes theoretical models developed by cultural anthropologists and ethnographers of contemporary possession-practicing communities in the global south and its diasporas. Carlson demonstrates how possession in the Bible is a corporate and cultivated practice that can function as social commentary and as a means to model the moral self. The author treats a variety of spirit phenomena in the Hebrew Bible, including spirit language in the Psalms and Job, spirit empowerment in Judges and Samuel, and communal possession in the prophets. Carlson also surveys apotropaic texts and spirit myths in early Jewish literature—including the Dead Sea Scrolls. In this volume, two recent scholarly trends in biblical studies converge: investigations into notions of evil and of the self. The result is a synthesizing project, useful to biblical scholars and those of early Judaism and Christianity alike.

Book Seeing the Good in Unfamiliar Spiritualities

Download or read book Seeing the Good in Unfamiliar Spiritualities written by Gethin Abraham-Williams and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Eastern spirituality, paganism, Spiritualism, Theosophy, alternative science and medicine, popular psychology’ and ‘a range of beliefs emanating out of a general interest in the paranormal’ are the marks of today’s ‘new spiritual awakening’. Add the presence and practice of sizeable numbers of people pursuing some of the other Great Religions of the World, not the other side of the world but on our own doorstep, coupled with a scientific revolution quietly broadening our perspectives, and it is not surprising if many feel disoriented and confused. It is, however, not the first time we have had to face the prospect of a spiritual re-alignment on such a seismic scale. Something similar was going on in the time of the prophet Ezekiel, who had the insight and the courage to reshape his people’s beliefs in a way that not only served their needs at the time, but bequeathed a challenge to the world ever since. This book is addressed to those who feel themselves to be similarly stranded between two worlds: the familiar, but seemingly untenable one they grew up with, and the unfamiliar, but possibly more responsible one, where they can rediscover God as both credible and attractive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Bannen had every intention of finding adventure, being yanked through a magical portal two continents away isn't quite what he imagined happening. For that matter, being magically bound to a mage-in-training hadn't ever crossed his mind. Being the first human familiar ever summoned in Corcoran? Not on his to-do list.Rena certainly needs all of the help that she can get, as her magic is very different, inhibiting her of the normal shields and protections. Everyone says her summoning a human familiar is a mistake, that she needs to break the bond and send Bannen back. But Bannen doesn't like this idea, not one iota. Renata Rocci has the magic of a Grim Reaper, the heart of a lion, and a body too frail to keep up with either. She can face assassins; meddlesome mages; politicians; and legendary, nightmarish monsters without flinching. Without losing and that's sexy as sin. This is definitely not the adventure he signed up for. It's far, far better.
