… It is with great enthusiasm that Kermes supported this initiative hosting the studies, as though these were part of a conference, ‘ideal’ in that it never took place physically, but very much real in terms of the international plurality of its contributions, presented here thanks to lively exchange of information across frontiers … This publication is the fruit of a perfect and exemplary collaboration between curators, conservators and scientists brought together from all countries… The publication here before us provides a number of answers – let us be brave and use the word ‘definitive’ – to questions which have long been an issue of debate … Comme l’affirme ici même Sheila McTighe, toute vision plus large de la pratique de Poussin doit dorénavant prendre en compte et intégrer ces nouvelles données techniques. (Pierre Rosenberg de l’Académie française, Président-directeur honoraire du Musée du Louvre) This volume of the journal Kermes devoted to the meticulous technical analysis of several works by Nicolas Poussin, reveals the wealth of knowledge acquired through the implementation of new methods of physico-chemical analysis taken together with the detailed investigation of the handling and materials deployed during the process of creating the work of art. A number of different means have been employed in order to investigate in the greatest detail the nature of a particular pigment, its impurities, the effects of the addition of a medium as well as the effects created by mixtures … (Philippe Walter, Directeur du Laboratoire d’archéologie moléculaire et structurale, CNRS-UMR 8820, Université Pierre et Marie Curie) indice/Index: speciale – NICOLAS POUSSIN. Download or read book Early Italian Painting written by Joseph Archer Crowe and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscillating between the majesty of the Greco-Byzantine tradition and the modernity predicted by Giotto, Early Italian Painting addresses the first important aesthetic movement that would lead to the Renaissance, the Italian Primitives. Trying new mediums and techniques, these revolutionary artists no longer painted frescos on walls, but created the first mobile paintings on wooden panels. The faces of the figures were painted to shock the spectator in order to emphasise the divinity of the character being represented. The bright gold leafed backgrounds were used to highlight the godliness of the subject. The elegance of both line and colour were combined to reinforce specific symbolic choices. Ultimately the Early Italian artists wished to make the invisible visible. In this magnificent book, the authors emphasise the importance that the rivalry between the Sienese and Florentine schools played in the evolution of art history. The reader will discover how the sacred began to take a more human form through these forgotten masterworks, opening a discrete but definitive door through the use of anthropomorphism, a technique that would be cherished by the Renaissance.

Download or read book Southern Europe written by Giulio Sapelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until relatively recently most of southern Europe was governed by authoritarian dictatorships, but within the space of two decades more or less stable democracies have become established throughout the entire region. At the same time, backward peasant economies have been transformed by the injection of huge amounts of capital and new technology, into modern economies which are now approaching the size of the more established economies of Northern Europe. Southern Europe is a major contribution to our understanding of European politics. The product of original research and synthesis on exceptionally wide literature, it provides authoritative and systematic coverage of the politics, economics and society of this important region of Europe from 1945, up to the 1994 election of Silvio Berlusconi's far right alliance in Italy.
Download or read book The Medici Conspiracy written by Peter Watson and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins, as stories do in all good thrillers, with a botched robbery and a police chase. Eight Apuleian vases of the fourth century B.C. are discovered in the swimming pool of a German-based art smuggler. More valuable than the recovery of the vases, however, is the discovery of the smuggler's card index detailing his deals and dealers. It reveals the existence of a web of tombaroli -- tomb raiders -- who steal classical artifacts, and a network of dealers and smugglers who spirit them out of Italy and into the hands of wealthy collectors and museums. Peter Watson, a former investigative journalist for the London Sunday Times and author of two previous expos's of art world scandals, names the key figures in this network that has depleted Europe's classical artifacts. Among the loot are the irreplaceable and highly collectable vases of Euphronius, the equivalent in their field of the sculpture of Bernini or the painting of Michelangelo. The narrative leads to the doors of some major institutions: Sothebys, the Getty Museum in L.A., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York among them. Filled with great characters and human drama, The Medici Conspiracy authoritatively exposes another shameful round in one of the oldest games in the world: theft, smuggling and duplicitous dealing, all in the name of art.

Download or read book Italy s Eighteenth Century written by Paula Findlen and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of the Grand Tour, foreigners flocked to Italy to gawk at its ruins and paintings, enjoy its salons and cafés, attend the opera, and revel in their own discovery of its past. But they also marveled at the people they saw, both male and female. In an era in which castrati were "rock stars," men served women as cicisbei, and dandified Englishmen became macaroni, Italy was perceived to be a place where men became women. The great publicity surrounding female poets, journalists, artists, anatomists, and scientists, and the visible roles for such women in salons, academies, and universities in many Italian cities also made visitors wonder whether women had become men. Such images, of course, were stereotypes, but they were nonetheless grounded in a reality that was unique to the Italian peninsula. This volume illuminates the social and cultural landscape of eighteenth-century Italy by exploring how questions of gender in music, art, literature, science, and medicine shaped perceptions of Italy in the age of the Grand Tour.
