Ne désirant pas se limiter à un tel constat, notre travail, effectué en collaboration avec une orthophoniste travaillant depuis plus de trente ans auprès d'enfants atteints de surdité, se propose subséquemment de montrer dans quelle mesure ces derniers sont capables d'avoir un bon niveau de langage écrit. Sans nier leurs difficultés réelles concernant notamment la théorie de l'esprit, l'accès au symbolisme ou encore des difficultés d'ordre langagier, il a été proposé à un groupe de dix enfants sourds un atelier d'écriture. L'idée dominante est de leur laisser un espace d'expression libéré des contraintes scolaires dans lequel leur imaginaire est sollicité de manière privilégiée. Il nous semble important de démontrer que les enfants sourds ont des représentations mentales et un univers intérieur qu'il est primordial de laisser s'exprimer. Nous pensons que mêler dans une même activité ce qui provient d'une part d'un apprentissage explicite des aspects formels de la langue et d'autre part d'un apprentissage implicite lié à la pragmatique et à l'imaginaire, permet une grande richesse de productions, à la fois créatives, inventives et correctes d'un point de vue grammatical et orthographique. Le but du mémoire est de proposer un exemple de rééducation en groupe, avec des 1 techniques pouvant cependant être adaptées en rééducation individuelle. Sa visée est par conséquent rééducative et pratique, et non statistique. La méthode utilisée est celle des ateliers d'écriture, permettant un cadre précis avec des contraintes générant un écrit, à l'intérieur duquel tout est possible et propice au déploiement de la créativité. Notre analyse se porte notamment sur l'évaluation de la capacité à construire un récit d'imagination cohérent, respectant les consignes demandées et répondant aux normes du langage écrit.

He enjoyed a meteoric rise from Toulouse and Bordeaux to Paris and, despite his non-conformist tendencies, he escaped the guillotine. In fact, the revolutionaries acknowledged his position and during the Terror of 1794, they made him the director of the first school for the deaf. Later, he became a member of the first Ecole Normale, the National Institute, and the Académie Française. He is recognized today as having developed Enlightenment theories of pantomime, "signing,' and a form of "universal language" that later spread to Russia, Spain, and America. This is the first book-length biography of Sicard published in any language since 1873, despite Sicard’s international renown. This thoughtful, engaging work explores French and American sign language and deaf studies set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and Napoleon.

The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”
