Book excerpt: Excerpt from U. S Grant The history of the United States, or of the world at large, does not record a more honorable, chivalrous, and courageous soldier, statesman, and gentleman than U. S. Grant. If the following story of his life serves to inspire in its young readers something of General Grant's high sense of honor, truthfulness, modesty, his thoughtfulness for others, his dislike of all that was coarse, his respect for older people - and not only as a boy, but as General of all the armies of the United States, and during two terms as President - the writer will have achieved the inspiration that came from his own study of the life of this splendid American. Indebtedness is acknowledged to the excellent and interesting works on various phases of General Grant's life by the following biographers: Adam Badeau, Henry Copppie, James T. Headley, Rev. P. C. Headley, Albert Deane Richardson, Dana and Wilson, Colonel Nicholas Smith, George W. Childs, W. H. Van Orden, F. A. Burr, W. O. Stoddard, Captain Charles Eaton, Ringwalt, Swift, Hamlin Garland, Owen Wister, John Russell Young, and General Grant's own "Memoirs." This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular and Authentic Life of Ulysses S. Grant In any picture which can be possibly made of this great conflict, two figures will ever be prominent on the scene. Turn that picture as you may, like it or dislike it, think what you will of it, lincoln and grant will ever be looking straight at you. One was a statesman, who, calm, quiet, simple, guided as if by the very hand of Providence the civil forces through untried dangers and unheard-of calamities to a safe deliverance. The other was a soldier, as plain and simple, leading the embattled armies of the Republic through multiplied trials, through flowing blood, through defeats and Victories, through gloom and glory, to the achievement of a last and a glorious success. Lincoln is gone, his work done, his glory Complete. History preserves his name among the few nobly great. But grant remains to complete the drama of the great conflict. Something is yet to be done. The last scenes of the last act have not passed away. Grant is still on the stage, and in these last scenes he is the principal figure. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign Lives of Ulysses S. Grant, and Schuyler Colfax Before he was forty-three years of age he had participated in two great wars, captured five hundred guns, more than one hun dred thousand prisoners, a quarter of a million of small arms, redeemed from rebel rule over fifty thousand-square miles of territory, re-opened to the commerce of the world the mightiest river on the globe, and stubbornly pursued his path to victory, despite of all obstacles. Since then, he has crushed out the re bellion in the East, reestablished the authority of the Union over a territory larger than France, taken two hundred battle flags, scores of canon, thousands upon thousands of prisoners, and hundreds of thousands of small arms, and then modestly returned to the capital of the nation, to disband his army of a million of men, lay his sword at the feet of the Congress of the people, and wait their pleasure whether he should fill a high station or become an humble private citizen. The world fur nishes few such examples of greatness and humility, and our country only one other - that of George Washington. Download or read book The True Ulysses S Grant Classic Reprint written by Charles King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Ulysses S. Grant When invited to prepare the manuscript for this work the writer's first impulse was to decline. The subject, however, had for long years commanded his deep interest and much investigation. His admiration of the character and his study of the career of Ulysses Grant equalled probably those of his eminent biog raphers, and finally, in the belief that there were virtues in the true Grant to which full prominence had not been given, possibly because Grant himself would have regarded them as matters of course, there came the desire to write of our great commander as he seemed to one of the least of these his subaltems, and from the fulness of a store of information garnered through reading and hearing for half a century this memoir practically wrote itself. The real work came when it had to be planed and pruned to the prescribed limits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ulysses Simpson Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant was an American soldier and statesman who served as Commanding General of the Army and the 18th President of the United States, the highest positions in the military and the government of the United States. In preparing these volumes for the public, I have entered upon the task with the sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to any one, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the unavoidable injustice of not making mention often where special mention is due. There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men engaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion, of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special mention and are not here alluded to. The troops engaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds.
