Download or read book Ulysses Or Scenes and Studies in Many Lands Classic Reprint written by W. Gifford Palgrave and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses, or Scenes and Studies in Many Lands However, the seriousness of the impending loss for Trebizond, in spite of its almost pre-historical memories and high-sounding name, would, if deprived of its intercourse with Persia, soon sink into a mere coast village, remarkable for nothing but its ruined Comnenian castle - roused at last even Ottoman apathy into something of an effort. A real road, a carriage road, from Trebizond to Persia, was resolved on, was begun, and even, after a fashion, was completed. • Author : Geoffrey Nash
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2005-07-27
  • ISBN : 178672071X

Download or read book From Empire to Orient written by Geoffrey Nash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-07-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Empire to Orient offers an alternative perspective on Britain's late imperial period by looking at the lives and the writings of the men who chose to defy the conventional social and political attitudes of the British ruling classes towards the Near East. Between the Greek revolt in 1830 and the fall of the Caliphate in 1924 a different kind of voice was heard that was both anti-Imperialist and pro-Islamic. Geoffrey Nash places David Urquhart 's passionate belief in the ideal of municipal government in Turkey, W.S. Blunt's enthusiasm for the Egyptian reformers of the Azhar, E.G. Browne's zeal for the Persian revolution and Marmaduke Pickthall's pained advocacy of the cause of the Young Turks into their political and historical context and into the context of their writings. The author argues that the actions of these men represented a distinctive identification with the Islamic world and of the involvement of the West in its politics. By condemning Britain's manoeuvres and choice of allies in the Near East, each of these writers embellished a narrative of betrayal and a breach with the British educated classes' view of the Islamic East. Through the lives and writings of these men who identified so passionately with the Islamic world, Nash offers a fascinating perspective on Britain's late imperial period.

Book Commodities and Culture in the Colonial World

Download or read book Commodities and Culture in the Colonial World written by Supriya Chaudhuri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodity, culture and colonialism are intimately related and mutually constitutive. The desire for commodities drove colonial expansion at the same time that colonial expansion fuelled technological invention, created new markets for goods, displaced populations and transformed local and indigenous cultures in dramatic and often violent ways. This book analyses the transformation of local cultures in the context of global interaction in the period 1851–1914. By focusing on episodes in the social and cultural lives of commodities, it explores some of the ways in which commodities shaped the colonial cultures of global modernity. Chapters by experts in the field examine the production, circulation, display and representation of commodities in various regional and national contexts, and draw on a range of theoretical and disciplinary approaches. An integrated, coherent and urgent response to a number of key debates in postcolonial and Victorian studies, world literature and imperial history, this book will be of interest to researchers with interests in migration, commodity culture, colonial history and transnational networks of print and ideas.

Book Status and Security in Southeast Asian State Systems

Download or read book Status and Security in Southeast Asian State Systems written by Nicholas Tarling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia serves as an excellent case study to discuss major transformations in the relationship between states. This book looks at the changing nature of relationships between countries in Southeast Asia, as well as their relationships with other states in Asia and beyond. A diverse region in many areas, open to outside influence in many fields, but not without dynamics of its own, Southeast Asia has been through centuries the site of states with very differing levels of power and in a variety of forms. It has also been exposed to powerful neighbours, seawards empires and contending world powers. Adopting a historical approach, the book analyses state relations against the background of regional and geopolitical developments from within and without. It discusses how Southeast Asian states of the 21st century can best preserve their security in the context of the rise of China, and goes on to look at the extent to which they can preserve their autonomy of action. Offering a long-term perspective on these issues, this inter-disciplinary study is of interest to scholars and students of Southeast Asian history and politics, world history and international relations.
