Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Ulysses Some have even supposed that in the hero of the Odys sey we have the best portrait of Homer himself. If so, we know that he was not simply a poet, but, like Ulysses, a man of many resources and many devices - a sort of Greek Yankee, always equal to the occasion, who could fight, sing, or flatter his way through all difficulties, and was sure of success in the end. To understand and enjoy this little book of Charles Lamb's, one must know something of what precedes it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was king of Ithaca, an island Off the west coast of Greece. He joined the'expedition of the Greeks against Troy, leaving his wife Penelope, with their infant son Telemachus, on the island. He is described in the Iliad as taking a leading part in the siege Of Troy, and he was the chief 'of the band that, concealed in the wooden horse, entered the city and brought about its fall. After the destruction of Troy he set out for home, but it was ten years before he arrived there. The story of the adventures that befel him during this time is told in the Odyssey. At length he reached Ithaca, punished the men who were wasting his substance, and was restored to his wife and son. He had been away from home for twenty years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Joyce's Ulysses: A Study The 'key' to Ulysses, as M. Valery Larbaud has remarked, is plain to see on' its title-page: the name 'ulysses'. It is in the story of the Odyssey that we may find a clue to the obscurities in this modern epic of a Dublin day. And the justification for this approximation of the ancient to the modem is founded on mysticism, 'upon incertitude, upon unlikelihood', like the Church, like all the theories that, hot for certainties, sapient man has concocted to solve the scheme of things. In writing this study I have not hesitated to emphasize the importance of the Homeric analogies and to explore certain remote hinterlands of esoteric thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Odyssey, or the Adventures of Ulysses: For Boys and Girls A few thoughts upon the nature of the work may be appropriate here. The many points of difference in the Iliad' and Odyssey have raised the question of their common authorship but the best judgment ascribes them both to the same gifted mind. This very difference is a mark of the fertile genius of their great author, and gives an added charm to each. The Iliad, says one. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half a Hundred Hero Tales of Ulysses and the Men of Old In performing this pleasant task, for it has been really a task fit for hot weather, and one of the most agreeable, of a literary kind, which he ever undertook, - the author has not always thought it necessary to write downward, in order to meet the comprehension of children. He has generally suffered the theme to soar, whenever such was its tendency, and when he himself was buoyant enough to follow without an effort. Children possess an unestimated sensibility to whatever is deep or high, in im agination or feeling, so long as it is simple, like wise. It is only the artificial and the complex that bewilder them. He held the bowl aloft and intoned: -Introibo ad altare Dei.Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely: -Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravelythrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of StephenDedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shakinghis head. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses, or Scenes and Studies in Many Lands However, the seriousness of the impending loss for Trebizond, in spite of its almost pre-historical memories and high-sounding name, would, if deprived of its intercourse with Persia, soon sink into a mere coast village, remarkable for nothing but its ruined Comnenian castle - roused at last even Ottoman apathy into something of an effort. A real road, a carriage road, from Trebizond to Persia, was resolved on, was begun, and even, after a fashion, was completed. The little boy grew fast, but before he was able to remember his first home his parents moved with him to Georgetown, twenty miles away. Here Mr. Grant had bought a large stretch of woodland, near which he set up a still larger tannery than his first one, and here Ulysses spent a happy boy hood. His father owned a number of horses, and the little son never seemed so happy as when he was allowed to care for these animals or to drive them about. On the other hand, the horses seemed to understand that he was their friend. They loved the child and obeyed him readily. When he was only seven or eight years old he could manage a team of horses, and he hauled from the woods all the wood used in the house and the tannery. Book excerpt: This strikingly illustrated edition presents Joyce’s epic novel in a new, more accessible light, while showcasing the incredible talent of a leading Spanish artist. The neo-figurative artist Eduardo Arroyo (1937–2018), regarded today as one of the greatest Spanish painters of his generation, dreamed of illustrating James Joyce’s Ulysses. Although he began work on the project in 1989, it was never published during his lifetime: Stephen James Joyce, Joyce’s grandson and the infamously protective executor of his estate, refused to allow it, arguing that his grandfather would never have wanted the novel illustrated. In fact, a limited run appeared in 1935 with lithographs by Henri Matisse, which reportedly infuriated Joyce when he realized that Matisse, not having actually read the book, had merely depicted scenes from Homer’s Odyssey. Now available for the first time in English, this unique edition of the classic novel features three hundred images created by Arroyo—vibrant, eclectic drawings, paintings, and collages that reflect and amplify the energy of Joyce’s writing.
