Book Ultraviolet Properties of Individual Hot Stars in Globular Cluster Cores 1

Download or read book Ultraviolet Properties of Individual Hot Stars in Globular Cluster Cores 1 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of an observing program using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite to investigate the ultraviolet properties of stars found within the cores of galactic globular clusters with blue horizontal branches (HBs), we obtained three spectra of the cluster NGC 1904 (M 79). All three were long integration-time, short-wavelength (SWP) spectra obtained at the so called 'center of light' and all three showed evidence of sources within the IUE large aperture (21.4 in. by 10 in.). In this paper we shall describe the analysis of these spectra and present evidence that the UV sources represent individual hot stars in the post-HB stage of evolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 39 records literature published in 1985 and received before August 15, 1985. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organiza tions, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. On account of the introduction of an object index the scope of index information will be considerably enlarged beginning with this volume. In connection with the subject index an additional source to satisfy the needs of retrieval is opened up. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Ms. Karin Burkhardt, Ms. Susanne Schlotelburg, and Mr. Stefan Wagner supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II

Download or read book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II written by Miguel Chavez Dagostino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an up-to-date collection of reviews and contributed articles in the field of ultraviolet astronomy. Its content has been mainly motivated by the recent access to the rest frame UV light of distant red galaxies, gained through large optical facilities. This driveway has derived in a renewed interest on the stars that presumably dominate or have important effects on the integrated UV properties of evolved systems of the nearby and faraway Universe. The topics included in this volume extend from the fresh spectroscopic analyses of high redshift early-type galaxies observed with the 8-10m class telescopes to the fundamental outcomes from various satellites, from the long-lived International Ultraviolet Explorer to current facilities, such as the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This is one of the few volumes published in recent years devoted to UV astronomical research and the only one dedicated to the properties of evolved stellar populations at these wavelengths. This contemporary panorama will be an invaluable resource in the preparation of the next planned space missions, such as the World Space Observatory and the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope.

Book Hot Stars in the Galactic Halo

Download or read book Hot Stars in the Galactic Halo written by Saul J. Adelman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stars that comprise a halo around our Galaxy are intriguing - they have abundances of elements that suggest they are old. The properties of these 'hot stars' and similar stars in other galaxies challenge the current, well-established theory of stellar evolution in many ways. Studying the collective properties of these stars provides important input to many areas of astrophysics - including the formation of our Galaxy, the late phases of stellar evolution and the stellar populations of other galaxies. The study of hot stars in the halo of our Galaxy is undergoing an exciting renaissance owing to important new observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and ASTRO1 and to techniques recently developed for ground-based observations. Advances in computers have also recently led to a far more detailed and complete theoretical understanding of stellar evolution. A conference was held in Union College, New York, to gather experts in the field and this volume draws together their articles to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review for graduate students and researchers.
