Book Ultraviolet Probing of Laser Produced Plasmas with Picosecond Pulses

Download or read book Ultraviolet Probing of Laser Produced Plasmas with Picosecond Pulses written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical photography, through such means as interferometry, Faraday rotation, and simple shadowgraphs, can provide significant data for understanding the absorption and transport of energy within laser produced plasmas. For plasmas produced by intense, sub-nanosecond Nd laser pulses, one is required to study electron densities in the 102° to 1021 e/cc range, with density contour velocities of 106 to 107 cm/sec, and axial scale lengths of 1-20 .mu.m. The relationship between these plasma parameters and the requisite photographic system is described. It is concluded that the system requires a probe wavelength in the middle ultraviolet, a pulse duration in the 10-100 picosecond regime, and large numerical aperture optics corrected for spherical aberrations. Results obtained at 2660 A with holographic microinterferometry, Faraday rotation, and shadowgraphs are presented.

Book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena

Download or read book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena written by Helmut J. Schwarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the third Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" in 1973, one area within the scope of this con ference received increased attention: laser fusion. This possi bility was emphasized in February 1977 in a Seminar on US energy policies at The Hartford Graduate Center by John F. O'Leary, Head of the Federal Energy Administration, who said that "by the year 2100, ••• laser fusion will be coming along, giving us a new age of choice". Efforts in research and development were stepped up to investigate new concepts of laser ignition of controlled nuclear reactions. Here, one expects no radioactive waste from fuel. The deuterium-tritium reaction - the only one which may be possible with magnetic field confinement in tokamaks - has a highly radio active tritium ~ycle, while, in principle, laser reactions are possible with pure deuterium, hydrogen-boron or others. The worldwide progress in laser compression was not only stim ulated by the energy crisis, but also by its advancements. In our first Workshop in 1969 F. F10ux of the French Limei1 Laboratories described his experiments, which led, only one month later, to the production of fusion neutrons in such large numbers as had not been achieved up to then (see appendix of Vol. I these Proceedings).

Book High order Harmonic Generation in Laser Plasma Plumes

Download or read book High order Harmonic Generation in Laser Plasma Plumes written by Rashid A. Ganeev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of high-order harmonic generation in laser-produced plumes, covering the principles, past and present experimental status and important applications. It shows how this method of frequency conversion of laser radiation towards the extreme ultraviolet range matured over the course of multiple studies and demonstrated new approaches in the generation of strong coherent short-wavelength radiation for various applications. Significant discoveries and pioneering contributions of researchers in this field carried out in various laser scientific centers worldwide are included in this first attempt to describe the important findings in this area of nonlinear spectroscopy. High-Order Harmonic Generation in Laser Plasma Plumes is a self-contained and unified review of the most recent achievements in the field, such as the application of clusters (fullerenes, nanoparticles, nanotubes) for efficient harmonic generation of ultrashort laser pulses in cluster-containing plumes and resonance-induced enhancement of harmonic yield. It can be used as an advanced monograph for researchers and graduate students working in the field of nonlinear spectroscopy. It is also suitable for researchers in laser physics and nonlinear optics who wish to have an overview of the advanced achievements in laser ablation-induced high-order harmonic generation spectroscopy. The carefully presented details of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control frequency conversion of laser pulses in plasma plumes. The studies described in this book pave the way for the development of a new method of materials studies using the laser ablation-induced high-order harmonic generation spectroscopy, which can exploit the spectral and structural properties of various solid-state materials through their ablation and further propagation of short laser pulse through laser-produced plasma and generation of high-order harmonics.

Book Diagnostics for Fusion Experiments

Download or read book Diagnostics for Fusion Experiments written by E. Sindoni and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostics for Fusion Experiments provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of plasma physics. This book presents the requirement in measuring electron and ion temperatures at the multi-key level. Organized into four parts encompassing 36 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the principles and methods by which analysis of the fast neutrals obtained by charge exchange in the plasma volume can be utilized to obtain the plasma ion temperature. This text then examines the use of active particle beam systems in plasma diagnostics. Other chapters consider the source function for production of fast neutrals in Tokamak plasma. This book discusses as well the special diagnostic needs of mirror machines, with focus on diagnostics involving the higher-power neutral beams used with them. The final chapter deals with the standard mirror fission-fusion hybrid, tandem mirror, and the field-reversed mirror. This book is a valuable resource for experimental physicists and research workers.

Book Pump Probe Investigation of Picosecond Laser Gas Target Interactions

Download or read book Pump Probe Investigation of Picosecond Laser Gas Target Interactions written by C. G. Durfee and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on a time-resolved investigation of the hydrodynamics of a laser-produced plasma. A 100 ps pulse is focused into a chamber filled with xenon for various pulse energies and pressures. This pulse (the pump pulse) forms a plasma, which is probed by a second pulse (the probe pulse) with a variable delay of up to 2.5 ns. The gradients in the plasma density profile produce a lensing effect on the probe pulse. The beam transmitted through the plasma is viewed with a CCD camera. The diffraction pattern of the probe pulse can be seen by subtracting the image of the first pulse beam from the image produced by the two-pulse beam.

Book The Interaction of Short Ultraviolet Laser Pulses with Surfaces Laser Probes of Nanoscale Surface

Download or read book The Interaction of Short Ultraviolet Laser Pulses with Surfaces Laser Probes of Nanoscale Surface written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emphasis of the research in this program has been to investigate the use of UV lasers for surface diagnostics and for the probing of nanoscale surface physics. Our current program focuses on electron coupling and confinement on nanostructured surfaces, and the use of short-pulse nonlinear laser photoemission techniques to probe these phenomena. Specifically the program is to investigate low-dimensional, quantum confinement of electrons on surfaces patterned with angstrom-scale features. Electronic systems of reduced dimensionality are of interest for a variety of applications for future nano-electronic and magnetic devices. For example, reduced dimensionality plays an important role in such important and timely phenomena as Q bits for quantum computing, and more generally in quantum-dot physics.

Book Picosecond 14 7 Nm Interferometry of High Intensity Laser produced Plasmas

Download or read book Picosecond 14 7 Nm Interferometry of High Intensity Laser produced Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed a compact, 14.7 nm, sub-5 ps x-ray laser source at LLNL together with a Mach-Zehnder type Diffraction Grating Interferometer built at Colorado State University for probing dense, high intensity laser-produced plasmas. The short wavelength and pulse length of the probe reduces refraction and absorption effects within the plasma and minimizes plasma motion blurring. This unique diagnostic capability gives precise 2-D density profile snapshots and is generating new data for rapidly evolving laser-heated plasmas. A review of the results from dense, mm-scale line focus plasma experiments will be described with detailed comparisons to hydrodynamic simulations.

Book Fast Electrical and Optical Measurements

Download or read book Fast Electrical and Optical Measurements written by D.J. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1065 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Advanced Study Institute on Fast Electrical and Optical Diagnostic Principles and Techniques was held at II Ciocco, Castelvecchio Pascoli, Italy, 10-24 July 1983. This publication is the Proceedings from that Institute. The Institute was attended by ninety-seven participants representing the United States, West Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, and France. The objective of the Institute was to provide a broad but comprehensive presentation of the various measurement and analy sis techniques that can be employed to investigate fast physical events, nominally in the sub-microsecond regime. This requires both an understanding of the basic principles underlying the diagnostic employed and its limitations, and a knowledge of the practical techniques available to obtain reliable and repeatable data. This Institute was thus structured to begin tutorially, followed by more practical techniques, demonstrations, and discussions. The Institute was divided into the following major sections: (1) Overview of Applications and Needs; (2) Voltage and Current Measurements; (3) Data Acquisition; (4) Grounding and Shield ing; (5) Fast Photography; (6) Refractive Index Measurements; (7) X-ray Diagnostics; (8) Spectroscopy; and (9) Active Opti cal Techniques. This Proceeding has been divided into two separate volumes. Volume 1, Current and Voltage Measurements, includes Sections (1) through (4) above; Volume 2, Optical Meas urements, includes Sections (5) through (9).
