Book Radiation Curing of Coatings

Download or read book Radiation Curing of Coatings written by Joseph V. Koleske and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RADIATION CHEMISTRY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO the coating and paint technology industry involves the application of a low viscosity mixture principally comprised of reactive monomers and oligomers but containing, as well, conventional coating additives such as fillers, colorants in the form of dyes or pigments, surfactants, and so on to a substrate and exposing them to a radiation sourceparticularly ultraviolet (UV) or electron beam (EB) radiationfor very short periods of time. When required, as in UV radiation curing, a small amount of photoinitiator is included in the formulation. When exposed to the radiation source, the mixture of materials is almost instantaneously converted into an effectively cross-linked, high quality coating or other product [1]. Radiation technology, as applied to coatings, had its infancy in the late 1960s and early 1970s when governmental regulation began requiring that solvent emissions from paint and coatings be decreased and regulated. At that time, most coatings were formulated with high molecular weight polymers and large amounts (often 80 % or more) of inexpensive solvents and cosolvents that for the most part were emitted to the atmosphere. Regulation increasingly forced companies to decrease these emitted solvents, and it was in this environment that new technologies such as high solids, powder, and radiation-cured coatings were born. Changes were slow to come into being in the stodgy (at that time) paint and coatings business, but today each of these methods of formulation and curing has become an important part of the coating and paint business. RADTECH International is an association for ultraviolet and electron beam technology as related to radiation-cured products for the adhesive, coating, ink, paint, and related industries. This group publishes a report (RadTech Report) five times a year, conducts UV/EB technology expositions and conferences and publishes the conference proceedings, has various publication and information available, and maintains a link between the various facets of the UV/EB industry (see www.radtech.org).

Book Handbook of Adhesion Technology

Download or read book Handbook of Adhesion Technology written by Lucas F. M. da Silva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 1569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesives have been used for thousands of years, but until 100 years ago, the vast majority was from natural products such as bones, skins, fish, milk, and plants. Since about 1900, adhesives based on synthetic polymers have been introduced, and today, there are many industrial uses of adhesives and sealants. It is difficult to imagine a product—in the home, in industry, in transportation, or anywhere else for that matter—that does not use adhesives or sealants in some manner. The Handbook of Adhesion Technology is intended to be the definitive reference in the field of adhesion. Essential information is provided for all those concerned with the adhesion phenomenon. Adhesion is a phenomenon of interest in diverse scientific disciplines and of importance in a wide range of technologies. Therefore, this handbook includes the background science (physics, chemistry and materials science), engineering aspects of adhesion and industry specific applications. It is arranged in a user-friendly format with ten main sections: theory of adhesion, surface treatments, adhesive and sealant materials, testing of adhesive properties, joint design, durability, manufacture, quality control, applications and emerging areas. Each section contains about five chapters written by internationally renowned authors who are authorities in their fields. This book is intended to be a reference for people needing a quick, but authoritative, description of topics in the field of adhesion and the practical use of adhesives and sealants. Scientists and engineers of many different backgrounds who need to have an understanding of various aspects of adhesion technology will find it highly valuable. These will include those working in research or design, as well as others involved with marketing services. Graduate students in materials, processes and manufacturing will also want to consult it.

Book Applications of Polymers

Download or read book Applications of Polymers written by Raymond Seymour and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural polymers, such as proteins, starch, cellulose, hevea rubber, and gum which have been available for centuries, have been applied as materials for food, leather, sizings, fibers, structures, waterproofing, and coatings. During the past century, the use of both natural and syn thetic polymers has been expanded to include more intricate applications, such as membranes, foams, medicinals, conductors, insulators, fibers, films, packaging and applications requiring high modulus at elevated temperatures. The topics in this symposium which are summarized in this book are illustrative of some of the myriad applications of these ubiquitous mater ials. As stated in forecast in the last chapter in this book, it is cer tain that revolutionary applications of polymers will occur during the next decades. Hopefully, information presented in other chapters in this book will catalyze some of these anticipated applications. It is appropriate that these reports were presented at an American Chemical Society Polymer Science and Engineering Division Award Symposium honoring Dr. O.A. Battista who has gratifying to note that Phillips Pet roleum Company, which has paved the way in applications of many new poly mers, is the sponsor of this important award. We are all cheerfully expressing our thanks to this corporate spon sor and to Distinguished Professor Raymond B. Seymour of the University of Southern Mississippi who served as the organizer of this symposium and editor of this important book.

Book Industrial Accelerators and Their Applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique new book is a comprehensive review of the many current industrial applications of particle accelerators, written by experts in each of these fields. Readers will gain a broad understanding of the principles of these applications, the extent to which they are employed, and the accelerator technology utilized. The book also serves as a thorough introduction to these fields for non-experts and laymen. Due to the increased interest in industrial applications, there is a growing interest among accelerator physicists and many other scientists worldwide in understanding how accelerators are used in various applications. The government agencies that fund scientific research with accelerators are also seeking more information on the many commercial applications that have been or can be developed with the technology developments they are funding. Book Pressure Sensitive Adhesives and Applications

Download or read book Pressure Sensitive Adhesives and Applications written by Istvan Benedek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives and Applications, Second Edition explains how pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) work, why they are used, and the technology used to manufacture them. This second edition features the latest developments in the field. Dr. Benedek discusses the factors that affect the rheology and special flow characteristics responsible for the adhesivity of liquid and solid PSAs. His book explores the viscoelastic behavior of PSAs, and compares them to plastics, rubbers, and polymers properties and examines the parameters that influence the conversion process of PSAs from the coating of carrier materials to the properties of the final laminate. The author covers adhesion/cohesion balance, time-temperature dependence of pressure sensitivity, chemical composition, coating properties, and coating processes affect the adhesive properties of PSA and their end products and how application-specific performance indices are used to determine the formulation and manufacture of raw materials. In addition, up-to-date coating machines, converting technology, and environmental considerations in the manufacture of PSA final products as well as industry-specific methods of testing for quality assurance and control are discussed. Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives and Applications, Second Edition combines the theoretical basis of pressure sensitivity with the practical aspects of manufacturing, testing, and use of PSAs. Readers are offered an exhaustive as well as comparative look at the engineering of plastics, adhesives, and pressure-sensitives, resulting in an indispensable, up-to-date reference for adhesive and polymer chemists and technologists.
