Download or read book Reverse Osmosis Membrane Research written by H. Lonsdale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Th i s book had its orl gl n in the sympos i urn on "Polymers for Desalination" sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and held in September, 1971 in Wash ington D. C. at the 162nd national meeting of the Society. However, the book is not simply the proceedings of that symposium. A num ber of additional papers were contributed by other workers in the field, and the original papers presented at the symposium have, for the most part, been expanded. The book thus represents a broad cross section of membrane research and development activities in the United States and abroad within the field of reverse osmosis. The purposes of the book are to bring attention to important new developments in this field, to suggest what the next generation of reverse osmosis equipment may look like, and to indicate where fur ther research and development are needed. The vast majority of the papers collected here represent work supported by the Office of Saline Water of the United States Department of the Interior, and the emphasis here is clearly on the application of the reverse os mosis process to water purification. However, many of the concepts, methods, and conclusions are expected to be useful in other areas of membrane science and technology.

Download or read book Membrane Technology and Applications written by Richard W. Baker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally acknowledged text on membrane technology, presenting current theory and practice of engineering separation membranes, plus manufacturing and applications The newly revised and updated 4th Edition of Membrane Technology and Applications presents an authoritative overview of separation membranes, their theoretical underpinnings, manufacture, and use, beginning with a series of general chapters on membrane preparation, transport theory, and concentration polarization, then surveying several major areas of membrane application in separate chapters. Written in a readily accessible style, each chapter covers its membrane subject thoroughly, from historical and theoretical backgrounds through to current and potential applications. Topics include reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, pervaporation, microfiltration, gas separation, and coupled and facilitated transport; chapters on electrodialysis and medical applications round out the coverage. Changes for the new edition include a full revision of the Third Edition to reflect today's reality with the addition of new material and references as appropriate. Written by a highly qualified author with nearly 40 years of experience in the field, Membrane Technology and Applications includes information on: Ion exchange and electrodialysis, covering a long list of different small applications with new additions around flow through batteries and capacitive desalination Medical applications of membranes, with a new description and overview of the current state of the industry Other membrane processes, such as osmotic distillation, forward osmosis, and other key processes that don’t fit neatly into other chapters Research areas that the author would work on if he were, once again, a 21-year-old graduate student Membrane Technology and Applications provides essential coverage of the subject for industrial workers in the field of membrane technology seeking a balanced overview of related processes. Membrane industry professionals and researchers, along with graduate students in membrane technology, will also benefit greatly from the text.

Download or read book Water Renovation and Reuse written by Hillel Shuval and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Renovation and Reuse focuses on the general principles and technological developments of water reuse and renovation. This book provides documented case studies of reuse practices and experiences throughout the world. Organized into two parts encompassing 15 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the different aspects of the problem to conserve, reuse, and recycle the limited water resources. This text proceeds to discuss the initial phase of water renovation and reuse, which is based on the conservationists' concept that society's wastes should be utilized and conserved to preserve the fertility of the soil. Other chapters explore the second phase of water renovation and reuse, which is motivated by the need to conserve and reuse water in arid areas. This book discusses as well the policy of zero pollution in the United States, which led to programs of land disposal. This book is intended for biologists, engineers, chemists, agronomists, public health officers, and water resources authorities.

Download or read book Arsenic Remediation of Food and Water written by Bhaskar Sen Gupta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides information on the sources of arsenic contamination of groundwater and their impacts in the first part of the book consisting of 8 chapters. Process developments such as nano-adsorbents for removal of arsenic and other heavy metals are discussed in the second part of the book that comprises of 4 chapters. The third part of the book includes 4 chapters on technological interventions for the removal of arsenic such as indigenous ceramic membranes and Subterranean Arsenic Removal (SAR). The fourth part of the book deals with arsenic contamination in food materials and food chain systems, and consists of 5 chapters. Arsenic has long been associated with a variety of health complications in the human body. In order to address this, a chapter on arsenic contamination and impacts on human health has been included in the fifth part of the book. The book would be a valuable reference material for the scientific community in developing countries working on community water supply and treatment, food safety, public health and policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes for recovering fresh water from the oceans - of which men have dreamed since antiquity - have changed markedly in the last 20 years. In fact, it has become possible so to increase the productivity of the technical steps involved that the cost of production of such water is almost three orders of magnitude smaller than for other large volume industrial products. However, the monographs and comprehensive reviews which have appeared to date in this field have been prepared by specialists for specialists. In accordance with the tradition and objectives of the Gmelin Handbook, this bibliography has been prepared to provide access to aII of the ways in which fresh water can be, and has been, obtained on an industrial scale from the ocean. Production of fresh water from sea and brackish waters amounts to almost two million cubic meters per day, and this is increasing by about 25% per year. This means that it will increase nearly tenfold in 10 years.
