Book ULTRASOUND GUIDED INFRACORACOID INFRACLAVICULAR BLOCKS FOR DAY CASE UPPER LIMB SURGERY EVALUATION OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE FROM A DISTRICT GENERAL HOSPITAL

Download or read book ULTRASOUND GUIDED INFRACORACOID INFRACLAVICULAR BLOCKS FOR DAY CASE UPPER LIMB SURGERY EVALUATION OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE FROM A DISTRICT GENERAL HOSPITAL written by Athma Thottungal and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background and AimsHand and upper limb surgeries are routinely performed as ambulatory procedures. The anaesthetic used for these surgeries is either a regional anaesthetic (RA) or a general anaesthetic (GA) alone or in combination. RA provides adequate analgesia with the additional benefit of rapid recovery and discharge after surgery. This study evaluates the level of patient satisfaction and acceptance of the use of RA for ambulatory surgery.MethodsData was collected prospectively for 81 consecutive patients who had received an ultrasound guided infracoracoid infraclavicular block (ICB) for hand surgery.Various aspects of patient experience were evaluated by interviewing them prior to discharge using a questionnaire. We also collected postoperative data for 47 patients who consented to a telephone interview a week after surgeryResults70% had their surgery performed under ICB only. The rest requested sedation or GA in addition to ICB. 98% were highly satisfied with their experience during block insertion and having surgery under RA. 95% had no pain during their stay in hospital. 85% experienced no pain during the night of surgery. 55 % had block duration more than 24 hours. 94% believed that RA helped in faster recovery and discharge. 98% patients were very satisfied with their experience, 98% would opt to have surgery under RA again and 98% would recommend it to family and friends.ConclusionsICB as a RA technique was shown to be safe, effective and well tolerated; most patients were satisfied with this option for daycase hand and upper limb surgery.

Download or read book Anesthesia of the Upper Limb written by Fernando Alemanno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loco-regional anesthesia offers evident advantages in almost all branches of surgery since it couples perfect anesthesia with prolonged postoperative analgesia. Furthermore, new drugs and techniques are ensuring constant progress, and in the past decade the advent of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia has played a key role by allowing direct visualization of all anatomic structures involved in regional blocks. In conjunction with electrostimulation, it has significantly increased the success rate of loco-regional anesthesia. This book, comprising 16 chapters and more than 140 color illustrations, provides detailed coverage of the techniques currently employed in upper limb anesthesia. It opens by reviewing the anatomy of the brachial plexus and the topographic anatomy as it is of the utmost importance for anesthesiologists to have a deep knowledge of anatomy despite the assistance offered by new tools. Subsequently the various techniques, including supraclavicular, infraclavicular, and axillary brachial plexus blocks, peripheral blocks, and intravenous regional anesthesia, are discussed in depth, with due attention to potential complications. Up-to-date information is also provided on the role of ultrasound, and an entire chapter is devoted to ultrasound-guided interscalene and supraclavicular blocks. The book will be an invaluable learning tool for students and an excellent aid in daily clinical practice for anesthesiologists.
