It was undertaken in the hope of adding something to the rather meagre and inexact ih formation available ih this important region. More precise information not only of the critical state itself, but of the region about it is especially desirable for its bearing upon the equation of state, for the better understanding of the forces between molecules, and for any light that may be shed on the nature of the liquid state. It is thus seen that the program attempted is larger than the collection of data for use in evaluating the ratio of specific heats, a use to which studies of sonic velocities had largely been limited in the past. The results presented here are encouraging beyond anything that was expected when the study was undertaken.
