Book An Automatic Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing System for Studying Low Crack Growth at Room and High Temperatures

Download or read book An Automatic Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing System for Studying Low Crack Growth at Room and High Temperatures written by C. Bathias and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, an automatic ultrasonic fatigue testing system is presented, including a computer control and acquisition system, a video-camera-television system, an induction heating device, a magneto-strictive vibrator, and other electronic apparatus. The test machine controlled by an IBM PS/2 computer with analog to digital (A/D) and digital to analog (D/A) convertors runs at a very high frequency, about 20 kHz, and it carries out endurance tests and crack growth tests at room or high temperature. In this paper, a S-Ncurve for UDIMET 500 at room temperature and two fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) curves in near-threshold regime for ASTROLOY at 20 and 400°C under ultrasonic fatigue testing are published.

Book Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing of Ti 6Al 4V

Download or read book Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing of Ti 6Al 4V written by RJ. Morrissey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to investigate the high cycle fatigue behavior of a titanium alloy using an ultrasonic fatigue system. Fatigue testing up to one billion cycles under fully reversed loading conditions was performed to determine the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V. Endurance limit results were compared to similar data generated on conventional servohydraulic test systems and electromagnetic shaker systems to determine if there are any frequency effects. In addition, specimens were tested with and without cooling air to determine the effects of temperature on the fatigue behavior. Results indicate that the fatigue strength determined from ultrasonic testing was consistent with conventional testing. However, preliminary results indicate that cooling air may increase the fatigue limit stress at very long lives.

Book Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results

Download or read book Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results written by W. Weibull and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results discusses fundamental concepts of fatigue testing and results analysis. The book begins with a description of the symbols and nomenclature selected for the present book, mainly those proposed by the ASTM Committee E-9 on Fatigue. Fatigue testing methods are then discussed including routine tests, short-life and long-life tests, cumulative-damage tests, and abbreviated and accelerated tests. Separate chapters cover fatigue testing machines and equipment; instruments and measuring devices; and test pieces used in fatigue testing. The factors affecting test results are considered, including material, types of stressing, test machine, environment, and testing technique. The final two chapters cover the planning of test programs and the presentation of results. Test program planning involves the statistical design of a test series; specification and sampling of test pieces; and choice of test pieces, testing machines, and test conditions. The chief purpose of most fatigue tests is the experimental determination of the relation between the endurance and the magnitude of the applied stress range for the material and the specimen under consideration, and final results can be condensed into a table, graph, or analytical expression.

Book Determination of Fatigue Limit Between 105 and 109 Cycles Using an Ultrasonic Fatigue Device

Download or read book Determination of Fatigue Limit Between 105 and 109 Cycles Using an Ultrasonic Fatigue Device written by C. Bathias and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power ultrasound was used to study fatigue behavior of three alloys (Udimet 500, 17-4PH, and Ti-6A1-4V) since the loading frequency is very high (f = 20 kHz) and a great number of cycles can be obtained in a short time. The specimens were excited in resonance at the first longitudinal mode in such a way that maximum strain occurred in the middle and maximum displacement amplitude was obtained at the end of the specimen. Fatigue life behavior of the three alloys were investigated at ultrasonic (/ = 20 kHz) and conventional loading frequency (f = 20 to 50 Hz). Miniature dynamic strain gages were employed to measure maximum strain values during ultrasonic fatigue tests. The effect of high strain rate on fatigue crack initiation and propagation failure mechanism was examined. Fracture surface of specimens was observed by means of a scanning electron microscope. Fatigue resistance was found to depend upon ultrasonic and mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the material, loading regime, and surface condition of the specimen.

Book Application of Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing Techniques to the Evaluation of the Corrosion Fatigue Strength of Materials

Download or read book Application of Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing Techniques to the Evaluation of the Corrosion Fatigue Strength of Materials written by LD. Roth and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A corrosion fatigue testing system has been developed for examining the corrosion-fatigue strength of engineering materials in the very high cycle regime (109 to 1010 cycles) typical of many design lifetimes. Central to this resonant fatigue testing system is a high efficiency, large displacement, piezoelectric transducer which operates at a frequency of 20 kHz, thus enabling the accumulation of large numbers of cycles in a reasonable amount of time. A description of apparatus, environmental controls, and testing method is presented. Experimental 20 kHz and low frequency corrosion fatigue results for a number of engineering materials, including a 12% chromium stainless steel, show similar reductions in fatigue limit at a specified number of cycles, despite the difference in frequency. This result holds for a variety of aqueous environments with and without electrochemical controls imposed during testing. The data illustrate the capabilities of the ultrasonic corrosion-fatigue technique and are analyzed to assess its advantages and limitations.

Book Fatigue of Micro Molded Materials Aluminum Bronze and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia

Download or read book Fatigue of Micro Molded Materials Aluminum Bronze and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia written by Kennerknecht, Tobias and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Custom built setups were developed to investigate micro samples during quasistatic and cyclic testing in tension, compression and bending. Micro molded CuAl10Ni5Fe4-samples showed similar fatigue behavior compared to macroscopic samples due to both the sample size and microstructure being scaled down with the manufacturing process. Results from cyclic three-point bending tests on micro molded 3Y-TZP suggested that a minimum crack extension is necessary to develop cyclically degradable shielding.
