Book excerpt: The Peverell Press, a two-hundred-year-old publishing firm housed in a dramatic mock-Venetian palace on the Thames, is certainly ripe for change. But the proposals of its ruthlessly ambitious new managing director, Gerard Etienne, have made him dangerous enemies - a discarded mistress, a neglected and humiliated author, and rebellious colleagues and staff. When Gerard's body is discovered bizarrely desecrated, there is no shortage of suspects and Adam Dalgliesh and his team are confronted with a puzzle of extraordinary complexity and a murderer who is prepared to strike again. P.D. James, the bestselling author of Death Comes to Pemberley, Children of Men and Death in Holy Orders, once again explores the mysterious, strong and intense emotions responsible for the unique crime of murder, with authority and sensitivity. Original Sin is set in the literary world of London and possesses all of the qualities which distinguish P.D. James as a novelist. P.D. James has been influential as a crime writer for many years and her writing is often compared to the work of authors such as Val Mcdermid, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

Book Evil and Evolution A Theodicy

Download or read book Evil and Evolution A Theodicy written by Richard W. Kropf and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-08-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984 and recently revised and updated, this book deals with the problem of evil, or theodicy (God's justice). It contends that the process of evolution, particularly as it bears on the emergence of free will, rather than being a barrier to faith, gives us the key to understanding its greatest obstacle - the existence of so much suffering in the world. It further advances the still contested claim that God is truly our fellow sufferer in our struggle to overcome evil in all of its many forms.

Book The Book of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Download or read book The Book of Knowledge of Good and Evil written by Ron Henderson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After at least 20 years of my research in the Bible, beginning with the mission of trying to prove that the Bible is the Word of God, I have come to the conclusion that the Bible was not written perfectly, therefore concluding that maybe we shouldn't be so lazy, as to call the entire Bible The Word of God anymore. Instead, maybe scholars should do as I have done, and make it our mission to find the perfect word in the Bible. If some of us work together in this direction, we can at the very least salvage the Word of God in the Bible, before the antichristian world provides enough information to try to discredit the Bible altogether. In addition, this book provides an inside window into some real spiritual warfare taking place right now. The Book of Knowledge of Good and Evil also provides possible end results depending on which side wins these specific battles. If you worship God only this book will be of comfort to you, but if you not only worship God, but the apostles and prophets also, putting them on the same pedestal as God Almighty, you may wind up disliking me and this book. One of the main reasons why I wrote this book is to take the churches out of their comfort zone. My hope is many Christians all over the world will dig in their Bible and try to prove me wrong. Who knows, maybe we will all learn something new as a result. As for the ministers, preachers, pastors and priest who think it is their job to make themselves rich by taking their congregations hard earned money, who are too lazy to open the Bible to even challenge me. When you tell your congregation that I'm the devil or a servant of the devil, then may the authority of this book turn your church upside down and lay it to waste!

Book Sin in the New Testament

Download or read book Sin in the New Testament written by Jeffrey Siker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sin was an extremely important and serious concern for the earliest Christians and the authors of the New Testament writings. Early Christians came to see the life and ministry of Jesus as challenging presumptions about the meanings of sin and faithfulness. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of different understandings of sin in early Christianity. Jeffrey S. Siker describes how the earliest Christian voices represented in the New Testament writings understood "sin" not only as a theological abstraction, but also as a real reflection upon human thought and behavior that violated right relationships with both other human beings and with God. Siker explores language about sin in relation to the Jewish and Greco-Roman contextual worlds of the New Testament writings, and examines the development and change of these worlds in relation to the modern concept of sin.

Download or read book Zen Masters written by Steven Heine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending their successful series of collections on Zen Buddhism, Heine and Wright present a fifth volume, on what may be the most important topic of all - Zen Masters. Following two volumes on Zen literature (Zen Classics and The Zen Canon) and two volumes on Zen practice (The Koan and Zen Ritual) they now propose a volume on the most significant product of the Zen tradition - the Zen masters who have made this kind of Buddhism the most renowned in the world by emphasizing the role of eminent spiritual leaders and their function in establishing centers, forging lineages, and creating literature and art. Zen masters in China, and later in Korea and Japan, were among the cultural leaders of their times. Stories about their comportment and powers circulated widely throughout East Asia. In this volume ten leading Zen scholars focus on the image of the Zen master as it has been projected over the last millennium by the classic literature of this tradition. Each chapter looks at a single prominent master. Authors assess the master's personality and charisma, his reported behavior and comportment, his relationships with teachers, rivals and disciplines, lines of transmission, primary teachings, the practices he emphasized, sayings and catch-phrases associated with him, his historical and social context, representations and icons, and enduring influences.
