Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulster Journal of Archæology, Vol. 5 Towne doubtless represent the rude dwellings of the common people, and are such as are represented in all Irish maps about this date, when fixed abodes were the exception. It is interesting to find that this circular form of building, though of more durable material, survived in Carrickfergus till the close of the eighteenth century. This is well shown in a copy of a rare engraving in my possession, dating about 1780. I have thus endeavoured to review the more permanent features of this once important stronghold. There remains the shipping in the harbour, which may safely be taken to represent the mercantile marine of the period possibly the craft with its raised poop, at the pier-head, formed part of the Royal Navy. The trees within the church enclosure, do they merely represent the artist's idea of such without any attempt to define their species? Or is their tall toy-like form meant to represent the Irish yew, as has been suggested, which were so much in favour by the occupants of these early religious establishments? I am inclined to favour the latter view the careful work of the artist, evidenced throughout the drawing, leading to the opinion that the close resemblance between them and the tall form of this tree, known as the Irish yew, being not a mere coincidence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ulster Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 8 It of the forms of the stone implements are found also in bone; and this last class of objects rm quite a collection of tools, arms, and ornaments, is certainly not the least remarkable. Largest sized and most compact bones were made use of as hammers, as were also pieces of rn, into the spongy part of which was sometimes introduced a bone which was driven in as a surface where the horn was cut off. These hammers were pierced with a round or oval hole ring the handle, the position of which was occasionally oblique, as is remarked in some axes. Of the wood which entered into the hole of one hammer has been preserved, while the rhea been destroyed by the action of time, which explains the disappearance of axe handles t made of horn. A violent blow has often broken these hammers, which are indeed rarely iole. Although articles of wood are most frequently destroyed, a complete beetle has been d, made of fir. The wood being completely impregnated with water, and yielding to the pressure, left no doubt as to its antiquity.
