This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulster Journal of Archaology, Vol. 4 Sm, - Your account, in the last number of the Journal, * of the demolition of the cairn at Seraba, and the discoveries therein, interested me very much, in common, I am sure, with all your readers; but I would beg leave to take exception to the opinion expressed by Mr. Carruthers, that the finding of one of the well-known old Irish pipes among the debris, settles the question of the age of these articles, by proving, from the circumstance of being discovered in connection with the cairn, the contemporary character of the two objects, the cairn itself being admitted on all sides to have been an erection of a most distant age. I think it by no means settles the question, nor even advances a step in that direction, so long as the position of the pipe in the bottom of the structure, or some other place within it where it could not possibly have been laid by human hands subsequently to the erection of the cairn, remains undefined and unknown. These pipes have afforded Irish antiquaries much room for discussion: many entertain the Opinion that they are not older than the era of the introduction of tobacco into the country - no documentary evidence having, I believe, yet been dis covered, nor undisputed proof from any other source, that the practice of smoking was known to the ancient Irish. Tobacco, on its first introduction, seems to have seized at once on the public taste, if we may judge from the vast quantity imported into Ireland seventy or eighty years after that time: it is related that Raleigh himself, in the first or second year of James I., was pelted with tobacco-pipes in the streets of London. N ow, it is but reasonable to suppose, that if any substance, possessed even of a portion of the fascinating qualities of tobacco, had been known in old times, there was nothing in the habits and character of our early ancestors to prevent it from being received with as much favour in their sight as the more genuine weed at the present day is almost over the whole world, and among people in every stage of civilization, and that it would have been noticed accordingly somewhere. I do not assert that the subject is not noticed, but if discovered by any learned inquirer in any ancient document, it should be made known and it would go farther in settling the question of the antiquity of Danes' pipes, as 'they are sometimes called, than any other species of proof that could be adduced. These acres were then known as Leanagh and Corragh, and were but a small part of their ancient lands of Banagh, which comprised about acres, and Boylagh about acres. It was in Banagh, in the parish of Cill-leacht-oidhche (the church of the stone of the night), that the peninsula now known as St. John's point was situated. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ulster Journal of Archaeology, 1861, Vol. 9 Scotchmen as intruders, and the Scotch hated them in turn because they were papists. The strife was rapidly mining the island, and had already destroyed its credit as a place of trade. Of the two parties, the Scotchmen were the more violent and difficult to conciliate; but Lord Ma cartney knew better how to manage them than perhaps any other man of his day. He lost no time in allaying and adjusting the dissensions; his measures gave satisfaction to both parties, and he had soon the pleasure of witnessing the happiest results, both publickly and privately, throughout the colony. But this happy re-establishment of order was soon afterwards overthrown by a French invasion, which Lord Macartney bravely, but fruitlessly, endeavoured to resist. His lordship was taken prisoner, and plundered of all his personal property, together with many valuable papers, which he could never afterwards recover. Although Grenada was lost, his defence of it had been heroic, and, on his return to England, he met with a very gracious reception from the King and the nation. The British legislature granted forthwith to the island of Grenada, though occupied by the French, the indulgence of permitting the importation of sugars and other produce into Great Britain, and this boon was granted because of the gallant resistance made by Lord Macartney at the head of his little force, composed principally of inhabitants of the island. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ulster Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 8 It of the forms of the stone implements are found also in bone; and this last class of objects rm quite a collection of tools, arms, and ornaments, is certainly not the least remarkable. Largest sized and most compact bones were made use of as hammers, as were also pieces of rn, into the spongy part of which was sometimes introduced a bone which was driven in as a surface where the horn was cut off. These hammers were pierced with a round or oval hole ring the handle, the position of which was occasionally oblique, as is remarked in some axes. Of the wood which entered into the hole of one hammer has been preserved, while the rhea been destroyed by the action of time, which explains the disappearance of axe handles t made of horn. A violent blow has often broken these hammers, which are indeed rarely iole. Although articles of wood are most frequently destroyed, a complete beetle has been d, made of fir. The wood being completely impregnated with water, and yielding to the pressure, left no doubt as to its antiquity. The instrument had been cut from the branch using a part of irregular growth for the handle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
