Book excerpt: There have been uncountable episodes in military history were rearguards, made up of merely a handful of brave and determined men, staved off superior enemy forces. The stories of most of them were soon forgotten, having been too small and insignificant to be noted in thick history books. But for the men who took part in them, these actions were momentous. They knew what likely fate awaited them. These measures were by their very nature usually desperate ones, and their outcome had almost always meant inevitable annihilation. But their love of their land, families and their camaraderie too, gave them the needed strength and determination to help them overcome their fear of the predictable fate: Death. Will the difficult operation described within these pages follow the same pattern?

Book Brother of the Wander Path

Download or read book Brother of the Wander Path written by Frank Keith and published by Frank Keith. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a most unusual hobo. His real name is Henry Best, but all those who know him call him by the moniker Lefty. In the beginning, Lefty is as emblematic a vagabond as thousands of others too, which roam the nation during the early parts of the twentieth century. That is, he was until time and a few particular experiences turn him into a remarkable hobo. He is a rather complicated character to begin with and also a shrewd and sharp one too. Lefty’s greatest enjoyment in life, besides traveling, is telling children tales of his travels while he and they are gathered around his campfires. Although it is great fun and entirely harmless, many adults frown upon this because they either see danger to their children from Lefty or generally dislike hobos. One day, Lefty discovers a box during one of his countless wanderings. It lay half-submerged in a creek and when he retrieves it he finds that he can’t open it because it is a so-called strong box. However, later on and with the help of some children friends, who brought him tools to his camp, he managed to get it open. To his and the children’s disappointment, the box only contains some pocket change and papers. He divides the money equally with the children and put the papers back into the box and hides it. Lefty went away after he got roughed up by some locals and travels thousands of miles, crisscrossing the nation. He goes through thick and thin during the following year. Lefty lives through numerous adventures and he is nearly killed a couple of times too. That strong box he had found will profoundly change his life and other people’s too. He just didn’t know it yet.

Download or read book Tiffany written by Frank Keith and published by Frank Keith. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiffany lives in an age where a married woman’s duties are set in rigid conforms of a post-Victorian society. As a wife, she is the giver of her heart and her body and a servant to her husband and a nanny to his children. There is not much leeway for her to move outside of this sphere. Living in a small town doesn’t make things any easier; alas it makes some a bit more difficult. Tiffany’s life was never easy, but never really hard either. She was simply an average woman in an average town living an average life. Everything changes with her husband Dean’s alcohol abuse. As Dean’s addiction grows, so do her problems. Although she still loves him and does everything possible to recover their lost happiness, he sinks ever deeper into the pits of decadence. Early on already, even before Dean got worse, Tiffany’s mother Lilly encourages her daughter to leave Dean, seeing this as a lost marriage. Yet Tiffany refuses to give up. One day, a mine inspector named Jack Johnston comes to their little town. He meets Tiffany through her father, Brad, who is a foreman in one of the coal mines and knew Mr. Johnston from his job. Jack takes a liking to Tiffany. However, Tiffany remains steadfast and refuses to go into any romantic affairs, seeing that she is a married woman. When Jack is finished with his job, he returns to Pittsburg and life in Monongah goes on as usual. Dean’s drinking gets worse and he even begins to beat Tiffany. Lilly adamantly encourages her daughter to leave Dean, over and over again. Yet, despite the compounding troubles, Tiffany remains with him. One day a great disaster befalls the coal mines, killing many miners. Jack returns to town as an investigator, whose job it is to determine the cause of the great mine explosion. Because the little town is quickly filled with helpers coming from all over the nation, and the only hotel is soon booked out, Jack must reside in a private house. Fate wants it that he moves in with the Carmichaels … the house of Tiffany’s parents. This is a happy coincidence for Jack and a rather uncomfortable one for Tiffany. Will Jack be able to conquer Tiffany’s heart after all? Will Tiffany find a way to drop the heavy cloak of “social responsibility”, allowing herself to be swept away by him? How can Lilly help Jack in this?

  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Borderland written by Anna Reid and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A beautifully written evocation of Ukraine's brutal past and its shaky efforts to construct a better future.”—Financial Times Borderland tells the story of Ukraine. A thousand years ago it was the center of the first great Slav civilization, Kievan Rus. In 1240, the Mongols invaded from the east, and for the next seven centuries, Ukraine was split between warring neighbors: Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Austrians, and Tatars. Again and again, borderland turned into battlefield: during the Cossack risings of the seventeenth century, Russia's wars with Sweden in the eighteenth, the Civil War of 1918-1920, and under Nazi occupation. Ukraine finally won independence in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bigger than France and a populous as Britain, it has the potential to become one of the most powerful states in Europe. In this finely written and penetrating book, Anna Reid combines research and her own experiences to chart Ukraine's tragic past. Talking to peasants and politicians, rabbis and racketeers, dissidents and paramilitaries, survivors of Stalin's famine and of Nazi labor camps, she reveals the layers of myth and propaganda that wrap this divided land. From the Polish churches of Lviv to the coal mines of the Russian-speaking Donbass, from the Galician shtetlech to the Tatar shantytowns of Crimea, the book explores Ukraine's struggle to build itself a national identity, and identity that faces up to a bloody past, and embraces all the peoples within its borders.

Book excerpt: Ukraine is Europe's second state and this lavishly illustrated volume provides a concise and easy to read historical survey of the country from earliest times to the present. Each of the book's forty-six chapters is framed by a historical map, which graphically depicts the key elements of the chronological period or theme addressed within. In addition, the entire text is accompanied by over 300 historic photographs, line drawings, portraits, and reproductions of books and art works, which bring the rich past of Ukraine to life. Rather than limiting his study to an examination of the country's numerically largest population - ethnic Ukrainians - acclaimed scholar Paul Robert Magocsi emphasizes the multicultural nature of Ukraine throughout its history. While ethnic Ukrainians figure prominently, Magocsi also deals with all the other peoples who live or who have lived within the borders of present-day Ukraine: Russians, Poles, Jews, Crimean Tatars, Germans (including Mennonites), and Greeks, among others. Book Transformation on the Southern Ukrainian Steppe

Download or read book Transformation on the Southern Ukrainian Steppe written by Harvey L. Dyck and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Russian empire opened the grasslands of southern Ukraine to agricultural settlement. Among the immigrants who arrived were communities of Prussian Mennonites, recruited as "model colonists" to bring progressive agricultural methods to the east. The three volumes of Transformation on the Southern Ukrainian Steppe document the Tsarist Mennonite experience through the papers of Johann Cornies (1789–1848), an ambitious and energetic leader of the Mennonite colony of Molochna. This volume covers the years between 1836 and 1842, beginning with the creation of the Mennonite Agricultural Society and ending with the Warkentin Affair, which pushed the Mennonite settlement to the precipice of potential religious and political disaster. Throughout this era, Johann Cornies negotiated a shifting political landscape while guiding his community through equally challenging economic times. Cornies was well connected in the imperial government, and his papers offer a window not just into the world of the Molochna Mennonites, but also into the Tsarist state’s relationship with the national minorities of the frontier: Mennonites, Doukhobors, Nogai Tatars, and Jews. This selection of his letters and reports, translated into English, is an invaluable resource for scholars of all aspects of life in Tsarist Ukraine and for those interested in Mennonite history.

Book excerpt: Trip three to the Ukraine was an out of the ordinary journey, primarily for one reason: The Maidan. To visit this, in the meantime, world famous city square during the major protest movement known as the Euromaidan was the reason why I returned to this nation at this time, impromptu and in the dead of winter. Wanting to make the best out of this tour, I also visited my friends on the Crimea. Thus I went on another road trip, this time from Kiev directly to Simferopol. The mid-winter season would make this journey a somewhat adventurous undertaking, being in a country already fraught with bad roads. Another very memorable place visited was a former secret submarine base by the small Crimean town of Balaklava.
