Download or read book Consular Services to British Nationals written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (the Department) provides a wide range of consular services from over 200 Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates ("Posts") worldwide. On the basis of a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (HC 594, session 2005-06, ISBN 010293617X), the Committee examined three main issues: their progress in influencing British nationals travelling overseas; developing consular services as a responsive service; and reacting to consular crises. The Department has made some significant innovations, such as working with operators like EasyJet and publishing the Rough Guide to Safer Travel, to increase its influence on those travelling overseas. But consular staff are increasingly called to help the irresponsible minority whose problems may have been avoided by greater awareness and planning before travelling, or by sensible behaviour once abroad. The Department used its existing powers to charge for consular services in just 323 out of 84,000 assistance cases. In 2001, the Department procured a casework management system at a cost to date of £3.3 million, but this has not been successfully embedded across the organisation, and has not produced the management information the Department needs to manage its consular business effectively. Issuing passports at over 100 Posts is inefficient and exposes the Department to increasing risks from fraudulent applications. The Department has improved its crisis management capabilities since 2001, although there has been slow progress in updating and testing emergency plans at Posts. The Indian Ocean Tsunami presented an extreme challenge for consular services; their call centres were overwhelmed and they were unable to assist British nationals as quickly as they would have wished.

Download or read book Administrative Law in Action written by Robert Thomas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates and analyses how administrative law works in practice through a detailed case-study and evaluation of one of the UK's largest and most important administrative agencies, the immigration department. In doing so, the book broadens the conversation of administrative law beyond the courts to include how administrative agencies themselves make, apply, and enforce the law. Blending theoretical and empirical administrative-legal analysis, the book demonstrates why we need to pay closer attention to what government agencies actually do, how they do it, how they are organised, and held to account. Taking a contextual approach, the book provides a detailed analysis of how the immigration department performs its core functions of making policy and law, taking mass casework decisions, and enforcing immigration law. The book considers major recent episodes of immigration administration including the development of the hostile environment policy and the treatment of the Windrush generation. By examining a diverse range of material, the book presents a model of administrative law based upon the organisational competence and capacity of administration and its institutional design. Alongside diagnosing the immigration department's failings, the book advances positive proposals for its reform.

Download or read book Internet Banking and the Law in Europe written by Apostolos Ath. Gkoutzinis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union has long sought to create a single financial area across Europe where consumers in one country benefit from financial markets and activities in other countries. With the emergence of the Internet as a platform for the provision of online banking services, the creation of a pan-European market for banking services appeared a realistic proposition. In practice, however, this has not happened. This book asks why and argues that the creation of banking markets via the Internet relies on both available technologies and appropriate laws and regulations. The institutional and legal framework for online banking services in the single European market are examined, as is the level of legal harmonization achieved in the UK, France and Germany under the influence of the EU Directives pertaining to online banking activities.
Download or read book Insurance Law written by John Lowry and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Insurance Law: Doctrines and Principles follows the widely acclaimed first and second editions. It provides a detailed examination of the developing law of insurance, combining exposition of the law with critical analysis. The book is designed with the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students in mind. The text is enhanced by extensive citations to case law and academic commentaries, making the book ideal for students, scholars and practitioners alike. This new edition reflects the many changes that have occurred in the law of insurance since the second edition was published in 2005. The book is divided into two parts. Part I considers the regulation of insurance business and the general principles underlying the law of insurance contracts. Part II examines the way in which these principles are shaped by the particular insurance context in which they operate. The book is readable and authoritative, with a sound grasp of the realities of insurance practice; it is well sourced and generous with supplementary points. 'Lowry & Rawlings is a welcome addition to the ranks of insurance law textbooks and a serious contender for the student readership in this field.' Nicholas Legh-Jones QC, Lloyds Maritime Commercial Law Quarterly 'I recommend the book for undergraduate use, and as a starting point for postgraduate use. The book is well written and full of clear explanations of a difficult field of the law.' Neil Campbell, Law Quarterly Review '...can be warmly recommended for purchase or use by lecturers and students in the subject.' Dennis Dowding, The Law Teacher '...a very useful text on insurance law ... an eminently readable, good and critical book. It is clearly of the highest calibre.' Reuben Hasson, Canadian Business Law Journal

The roles of law enforcement officers, tax investigators, financial intelligence officers, compliance officers, lawyers and accountants - in enforcing both civil and criminal sanctions on organized crime - are also considered.
