Book UK Operations in Iraq

Download or read book UK Operations in Iraq written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-08-10 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report seeks to highlight some of the issues raised during the Committee's visit to Iraq in June 2006, which was undertaken in order to examine the operating environment being experienced by UK forces and to meet senior members of the new Iraqi Government. Amongst its findings, the Committee notes its concern at the deteriorating security situation in South Eastern Iraq, particularly Basra, and the implications for the security of UK forces. It welcomes the progress being made in the development of the new Iraqi army but highlights the serious challenges remaining in the development of the Iraqi police service. The report also raises concerns over the problems with equipment which requires urgent attention from the MoD, the effects of the extreme temperatures which troops are having to deal with, the shortage of helicopters and the strain on both air and ground crews. The Committee's report questions the Government's confidence that UK armed forces are not being overstretched, and calls for urgent action to address the growing capability gaps; and concludes that the issues raised in the report gives rise to fundamental doubts as to whether the UK armed forces are structured, trained and equipped to fulfil the role envisaged for them in the Strategic Defence Review and subsequent policy documents.

Book MI6 British Secret Intelligence Service Operations 1909 1945

Download or read book MI6 British Secret Intelligence Service Operations 1909 1945 written by Nigel West and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2020-01-19 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of GCHG describes covert missions that “are worthy of spy fiction, but the entire book is utterly fascinating and informative. Brilliant!” (Books Monthly) Written by the renowned expert Nigel West, this book exposes the operations of Britain’s overseas intelligence-gathering organization, the famed Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, and traces its origins back to its inception in 1909. In this meticulously researched account, its activities and structure are described in detail, using original secret service documents. The main body of the book concerns MI6’s operations during the Second World War, and includes some remarkable successes and failures, including how MI6 financed a glamorous confidant of the German secret service; how a suspected French traitor was murdered by mistake; how Franco’s military advisors were bribed to keep Spain out of the war; how members of the Swedish secret police were blackmailed into helping the British war effort; how a sabotage operation in neutral Tangiers enabled the Allied landings in North Africa to proceed undetected; and how Britain’s generals ignored the first ULTRA decrypts because MI6 said that the information had come from “a well-placed source called BONIFACE.” In this new edition, operations undertaken by almost all of MI6’s overseas stations are recounted in extraordinary detail. They will fascinate both the professional intelligence officer and the general reader. The book includes organizational charts to illustrate MI6’s internal structure and its wartime network of overseas stations. Backed by numerous interviews with intelligence officers and their agents, this engaging inside story throws light on many wartime incidents that had previously remained unexplained. “[An] extraordinary book.” —The Daily Telegraph “Fascinating reading.” —Firetrench

Book Contractors on Deployed Military Operations United Kingdom Policy and Doctrine

Download or read book Contractors on Deployed Military Operations United Kingdom Policy and Doctrine written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Cold War, the United States and United Kingdom (UK) armed services have undergone significant transformation in response to the radically altered threat environment, new operational demands, and reduced defense budgets. Central to this transformation in both states is an expanded role for private contractors in providing deployed support functions traditionally conducted by uniformed personnel. Despite the similar direction of military reform, the U.S. armed services' approach to battlefield outsourcing has undergone extensive public scrutiny and debate, whereas UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) initiatives have hitherto attracted comparatively little independent assessment. Close U.S.-UK military cooperation over recent years in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the likelihood that both states will remain close allies in future interventions, suggest that the UK MoD's approach to deployed contractor support is a salient issue for U.S. military planners. This monograph analyzes the MoD's outsourcing strategy and identifies those aspects of UK policy and doctrine that warrant consideration by the Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. armed services. Evaluation of the performance of MoD outsourcing policy and doctrine against measures of cost effectiveness and operational effectiveness reveals two broad observations. The MoD has developed a number of novel command and control mechanisms that have succeeded in rationalizing and removing the risk in commercial battlefield support. But the data necessary to evaluate the real impact of deployed outsourcing have yet to enter the public domain. Similarly, questions remain about the relative cost-effectiveness of organic military provision and contractor alternatives. Comparative analysis indicates that there are no fundamental differences in overarching MoD and DoD outsourcing philosophy, but there are specific MoD initiatives that could enhance the U.S. armed services' ability to manage their deployed contractor support. 7.

Book UK land operations in Iraq 2007

Download or read book UK land operations in Iraq 2007 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers recent developments in the political and security situation in Iraq, the prospects for political reconciliation at national and local level, the progress in implementing security sector reform, including the development of the Iraqi Army and Police as well as the transition of Basra to Provincial Iraqi control. It also examines the changing role of UK Forces in South Eastern Iraq as they prepare to hand over responsibility for security and assume the position of overwatch. The report therefore examines what overwatch means and whether the force levels proposed by the Government are sustainable. It concludes that the security situation continues to cause concern and that although there has been a decrease in attacks against UK and Coalition forces since the withdrawal from Basra Palace, there has been no reduction in attacks against the civilian population. The development of effective Iraqi Security Forces is fundamental and although there has been progress with the army, there are still murderous, corrupt, militia-infiltrated elements within the Police. It is unclear how the trainers will be supported when the UK force levels are further reduced. The plan is to reduce to 2,500 troops in Spring but there are questions about the sustainability of a force of this size and whether they will be able to do little more than protect themselves.

Book Counterinsurgency in Crisis

Download or read book Counterinsurgency in Crisis written by Robert Egnell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long considered the masters of counterinsurgency, the British military encountered significant problems in Iraq and Afghanistan when confronted with insurgent violence. In their effort to apply the principles and doctrines of past campaigns, they failed to prevent Basra and Helmand from descending into lawlessness, criminality, and violence. By juxtaposing the deterioration of these situations against Britain's celebrated legacy of counterinsurgency, this investigation identifies both the contributions and limitations of traditional tactics in such settings, exposing a disconcerting gap between ambitions and resources, intent and commitment. Building upon this detailed account of the Basra and Helmand campaigns, this volume conducts an unprecedented assessment of British military institutional adaptation in response to operations gone awry. In calling attention to the enduring effectiveness of insurgent methods and the threat posed by undergoverned spaces, David H. Ucko and Robert Egnell underscore the need for military organizations to meet the irregular challenges of future wars in new ways.

Book Transforming to Effects Based Operations Lessons from the United Kingdom Experience

Download or read book Transforming to Effects Based Operations Lessons from the United Kingdom Experience written by Strategic Studies Strategic Studies Institute and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside the United States, the United Kingdom (UK) has led the way in seeking to transform its military forces to meet the new strategic context in which it finds itself. Like so many of its counterparts, it has sought to do this within a defense budget that has continued to decline as a percentage of gross domestic product. This has meant a series of changes to the traditional approach to defense that have gone much further than the United States and many of its European counterparts. In essence, for good or ill, the UK has pushed ahead with changes to areas such as the use of contractors, both at home and on the battlefield; acquisition reform involving leasing and Public- Private Partnerships; the disposal of surplus defense real estate; and the role of sponsored reserves. As the same time, a considerable amount of attention has been given to how operations are conducted. As part of this process, the UK's Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces have officially sought to adopt an effects-based approach to operations within the context of an overall "comprehensive approach" that brings together the various organs of government. For the United States, the UK's approach to military operations is important for a number of reasons. First, the UK frequently engages in a variety of similar type operations from which there are lessons that may be applicable to the United States either now or in the future, such as counterinsurgency in Northern Ireland or nation-building in Sierra Leone. Moreover, a number of authors have argued that there is a distinctly "British way in warfare" which is particularly suited to such unconventional operations.Second, since the United Kingdom is one of the United States' closest allies, the UK armed forces are frequently engaged in operations in partnership with the United States. These have ranged recently from the Balkans to Afghanistan to Iraq. In fact, the only noticeable time the British were not involved in a U.S.-led operation since the end of the Cold War was in Somalia. The vast majority of these operations have involved sizable British commitments and a close integration of the British military in all the stages from planning through to nation-building. Interest in future British policy was most recently evident in the debate surrounding the transition of power from Prime Minister Tony Blair to Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Third, the UK is a member of various military alliances, coalitions, and partnerships which place it in a strong position to influence how others conduct operations. These include the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO); the European Union (EU); America, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (ABCA); the Five Power Pact in the Pacific; and the Commonwealth. In the case of NATO, it was General David Richards, the commander of the largely British Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) headquarters, who deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and oversaw the expansion of NATO's role, including, for the first time since the end of World War II, leading a significant U.S. contingent. This study therefore seeks to examine the extent to which the UK has transitioned to effects-based operations to ascertain (1) areas where the U.S. Army could draw lessons from UK policies; (2) areas where the U.S. Army and the British Ministry of Defense could develop integrated or complementary approaches and doctrines towards transformation for future alliance/ coalition operations; and (3) implications for the U.S. Army for working with the UK.

Book From Northern Ireland to Afghanistan

Download or read book From Northern Ireland to Afghanistan written by Jon Moran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moran concentrates on three aims: to provide an overview of British military intelligence operations in the last 30 years which concentrates on operational not strategic intelligence; to examine the debates over ethics and effectiveness that have followed these operations; and to examine the increasing attempts to place military intelligence under the same type of regulation that police and security intelligence operations have been subject to. As such, he provides a timely overview of intelligence effectiveness and ethics in this area of heightened interest and relevance in terms of the recent UK deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and in the light of the UK Strategic Defence Review. This book is not a philosophical discussion of military ethics; nor is it a study of operations alone. In the light of experiences from Northern Ireland to Afghanistan, it examines the debates over effectiveness which have surrounded British military intelligence activities whilst tying these debates closely to the ethical issues they raise. Each stage of operations is evaluated in context. Interest will cut across disciplines and as such this book will appeal to intelligence, counter-terrorism, military studies, politics, human rights and philosophy practitioners, scholars and students.

Book United Nations Peace Operations and International Relations Theory

Download or read book United Nations Peace Operations and International Relations Theory written by Kseniya Oksamytna and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is the first comprehensive overview of multiple theoretical perspectives on UN peace operations, with two main uses. First, it provides practical examples of how International Relations theories - realism, liberal institutionalism, rational choice institutionalism, sociological institutionalism, constructivism, practice theories, critical security studies, feminist institutionalism, and complexity theory - can be applied to a specific policy issue. Second, it demonstrates how major debates on UN peace operations - regarding protection of civilians, local ownership, or gender mainstreaming - benefit from a theoretical exploration. The volume is aimed at three audiences: scholars who want to keep up to date with the latest research on UN peace operations; undergraduate and postgraduate students who either seek to understand International Relations theories in general or are interested in UN peace operations..
