Download or read book India Since Independence written by Bipan Chandra and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and incisive introduction to contemporary India The story of the forging of India, the world's largest democracy, is a rich and inspiring one. This volume, a sequel to the best-selling India's Struggle for Independence, analyses the challenges India has faced and the successes it has achieved, in the light of its colonial legacy and century-long struggle for freedom. The book describes how the Constitution was framed, as also how the Nehruvian political and economic agenda and basics of foreign policy were evolved and developed. It dwells on the consolidation of the nation, examining contentious issues like party politics in the Centre and the states, the Punjab problem, and anti-caste politics and untouchability. This revised edition offers a scathing analysis of the growth of communalism in India and the use of state power in furthering its cause. It also documents the fall of the National Democratic Alliance in the 2004 General Elections, the United Progressive Alliance's subsequent rise to power and the Indo-US Nuclear Deal that served to unravel the political consensus at the centre. Apart from detailed analyses of Indian economic reforms since 1991 and wide-ranging land reforms and the Green Revolution, this new edition includes an overview of the Indian economy in the new millennium. These, along with objective assessments of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jayaprakash Narayan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, constitute a remarkable overview of a nation on the move.

Download or read book COMPARATIVE POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT written by S. A. PALEKAR and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-12-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable changes are taking place today in the structure and working of governments all over the world. This, in turn, has necessitated a change in the approach to the study of government and politics. This well-organized and systematic study takes into account these developments and shift in approach in the field of comparative government and politics. As the empirical study of political processes, structures and functions forms a major part of comparative political studies, the author examines them in detail. He also analyzes the many variables that are heterogeneous in nature. The book analyzes in tandem comparative government—which involves the study of different political systems with their institutions and functions—and comparative politics, which covers comparative governments and non-state politics. The latter also studies rule making, rule implementing and rule adjudicating. Since different political systems are governed by the constitutions of the nations concerned, the book deals in detail with the constitutions of these countries. While the text gives a comprehensive coverage of constitutions of democracies such as UK, USA, France, Switzerland and Japan, it also deals with the constitutions of authoritarian States like Russia and China. This text should be of great value to undergraduate and postgraduate students of political science as well as aspirants of civil services.

Download or read book Kennedy and Roosevelt written by Michael Beschloss and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revealing story of Franklin Roosevelt, Joe Kennedy, and a political alliance that changed history, from a New York Times–bestselling author. When Franklin Roosevelt ran for president in 1932, he gained the support of Joseph Kennedy, a little-known businessman with Wall Street connections. Instrumental in Roosevelt’s victory, their partnership began a longstanding alliance between two of America’s most ambitious power brokers. Kennedy worked closely with FDR as the first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and later as ambassador to Great Britain. But at the outbreak of World War II, sensing a threat to his family and fortune, Kennedy lobbied against American intervention—putting him in direct conflict with Roosevelt’s intentions. Though he retreated from the spotlight to focus on the political careers of his sons, Kennedy’s relationship with Roosevelt would eventually come full circle in 1960, when Franklin Roosevelt Jr. campaigned for John F. Kennedy’s presidential win. With unprecedented access to Kennedy’s private diaries as well as firsthand interviews with Roosevelt’s family and White House aides, New York Times–bestselling author Michael Beschloss—called “the nation’s leading presidential historian” by Newsweek—presents an insightful study in contrasts. Roosevelt, the scion of a political dynasty, had a genius for the machinery of government; Kennedy, who built his own fortune, was a political outsider determined to build a dynasty of his own. From the author of The Conquerors and Presidential Courage, this is a “fascinating account of the complex, ambiguous relationship of two shrewd, ruthless, power-hungry men” (The New York Times Book Review).

Download or read book Doing Gender Doing Geography written by Saraswati Raju and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the 1970s gender had been invisible in analyses of social space and place in the androcentric discipline of geography. While recent contributions to feminist geography have challenged this, in India the engagement of geographers with gender, by being conservative in its choice of focus and orthodox in methodology, has been unable to destabilise the established disciplinary order. However, with younger scholars becoming increasingly interested in studying gender in geography, novel and innovative methods that include combinations of quantitative and qualitative analyses, visual sources and in-depth case studies are being tried out and accepted in geography despite its masculine legacy. This pioneering study brings together Indian geographers’ contributions to understanding gender, and through them, seeks to enrich the discipline of geography. It engages with the recent ‘spatial turn’ in the social sciences, which has reclaimed the explanatory power of space and place in social theory that had been nearly lost to deconstructive postmodernist scholarship. The volume draws entirely from the Indian scholarship, showcasing contextualised knowledge production, but hopes to initiate a a dialogue with scholars elsewhere working with feminist methodologies.
