Book excerpt: For the last three decades, Uganda has been one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Globally praised as an African success story and heavily backed by international financial institutions, development agencies and bilateral donors, the country has become an exemplar of economic and political reform for those who espouse a neoliberal model of development. The neoliberal policies and the resulting restructuring of the country have been accompanied by narratives of progress, prosperity, and modernisation and justified in the name of development. But this self-celebratory narrative, which is critiqued by many in Uganda, masks the disruptive social impact of these reforms and silences the complex and persistent crises resulting from neoliberal transformation. Bringing together a range of leading scholars on the country, this collection represents a timely contribution to the debate around the New Uganda, one which confronts the often sanitised and largely depoliticised accounts of the Museveni government and its proponents. Harnessing a wealth of empirical materials, the contributors offer a critical, multi-disciplinary analysis of the unprecedented political, socio-economic, cultural and ecological transformations brought about by neoliberal capitalist restructuring since the 1980s. The result is the most comprehensive collective study to date of a neoliberal market society in contemporary Africa, offering crucial insights for other countries in the Global South.

Download or read book Children s Places written by Karen Fog Olwig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's Places examines the ways in which children and adults, from their different vantage-points in society, negotiate the 'proper place' of children in both social and spatial terms. It looks at some of the recognised constructions of children, including perspectives from cultures that do not distinguish children as a distinct category of people, as well as examining contexts for them, from schools and kindergartens to inner cities and war-zones. The result is a much-needed insight into the notions of inclusion and exclusion, the placement and displacement of children within generational ranks and orders, and the kinds of places that children construct for themselves. Based on in-depth ethnographic research from Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makerere University was first established as a colonial university and its challenge is to consolidate and improve on previous bold eforms. The Partnership for Higher Education in Africa commissioned case studies of higher education provision in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, as part of its effort to stimulate enlightened, equitable, and knowledge-based national development, and to provide guides to understanding. Makerere University has shown tremendous resilience from its establishment as a colonial university, through the economic hardships, political instability and mismanagement that began in the 1970s. It has embarked on an impressive road to recovery involving numerous bold reforms. The challenge now is to harness, sustain, improve and consolidate these changes. In association with Partnership for Higher Education in Africa; Uganda: Fountain Publishers

Download or read book The Search for a National Consensus written by Ben J. Odoki and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account presents the story behind Uganda's present constitution, established in 1995. The author was Chair of the commission charged with the task of drafting a new constitution for Uganda. The commission set out to make it, in every sense, a 'people's constitution', and the final draft was based on country-wide consultations at many levels. Another intention was to bring fundamental change to the causes of the economic chaos and human rights abuses that had for decades bedevilled the country. Justice Odoki takes the reader through the workings of the commission, the analysis of the oral and written submissions and evidence it received, the drafting of the final recommendations and the content of the constitution itself. His work concludes with an assessment of its achievements as well as the problems the constitutional review process is encountering.
