Book excerpt: Seventeen-year-old Julian Monk never expected to be a teen idol, but when opportunity strikes, he strikes back and throws himself headfirst into that new, exciting world of record deals, TV interviews, and screaming fan girls. His band mates are rather less enthusiastic about that new life they never really asked for. Dealing with their newly acquired fame and fortune is one thing – dealing with Julian is quite another. His sudden and unexpected metamorphosis from the shy and timid creature they have known all their lives into a surprisingly charismatic public speaker and global superstar takes everyone aback, and when Julian sets off on a very public crusade against superstition and bigotry, he raises more than just a few eyebrows – he raises hell, and his friends are no longer having any of it. Meanwhile at the Vatican, the newly elected pope Pius XIII is hell-bent on transforming the Church into a modern, ‘hip’ institution, and giving his PR advisor a headache or two. Intrigued by Julian’s radical way of inspiring some people while antagonizing others – including his own friends – simply by preaching love and understanding, the new pope can’t help but wonder where he heard that storyline before. They say God has a plan for every man, but this man has a plan of his own. The question is: can Julian withstand the temptations of the dark side?

Book excerpt: Imagine what would happen if your inner voices could materialise and interact with the world around you, changing shape and acting on their own will at the very time you needed to be at your most focused. Imagine if every antic, every argument, and every mishap these voices led you into was actually imprinting on your memory powerful visual associations ready to be recalled with ease as you walked into your driving theory test well equipped to pass with flying colours the first time. Imagine no more.Red, Green, and Amber are three specialist drivers prepared to do whatever it takes to become the driver for The Big Boss’s next job. They don’t yet know what the job is, but Big Boss has promised the cargo will be priceless. First, they must compete against each other in a gruelling two day round-the-country road race until three become one.‘The rules of engagement are simple. Avoid speeding fines, parking tickets... in fact, any violation that could draw attention to yourselves. If you are arrested at any point along the way, your participation in the interview process will end there.’ Red suspected he was going to have a problem with all of the above. With every aspect of the theory test invisibly woven into each scene, The Demon Road packs a genuinely memorable punch and delivers an explosive twist ending. It has been written with anyone studying to drive and pass their theory test in mind but is a must read for anybody driving on UK roads today. Author Richard reads widely, but is most inspired by the surreal writings of Haruki Murakami and Natsuo Kirino.

Book The Logic of Environmentalism

Download or read book The Logic of Environmentalism written by Vassos Argyrou and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although modernity’s understanding of nature and culture has now been superseded by that of environmentalism, the power to define the meaning of both, and hence the meaning of the world itself, remains in the same (Western) hands. This bold argument is at the center of this provocative book that challenges the widespread assumption that environmentalism reflects a radical departure from modernity. Our perception of nature may have changed, the author maintains, but environmentalism remains a thoroughly modernist project. It reproduces the cultural logic of modernity, a logic that finds meaning in unity and therefore strives to efface difference, and to reconfirm the position of the West as the source of all legitimate signification.

Book Culture and Resource Conflict

Download or read book Culture and Resource Conflict written by Douglas L. Medin and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a multi-cultural society, differing worldviews among groups can lead to conflict over competing values and behaviors. Nowhere is this tension more concrete than in the wilderness, where people of different cultures hunt and fish for the same animals. White Americans tend to see nature as something external which they have some responsibility to care for. In contrast, Native Americans are more likely to see themselves as one with nature. In Culture and Resource Conflict, authors Douglas Medin, Norbert Ross, and Douglas Cox investigate the discord between whites and Menominee American Indians over hunting and fishing, and in the process, contribute to our understanding of how and why cultures so often collide. Based on detailed ethnographic and experimental research, Culture and Resource Conflict finds that Native American and European American hunters and fishermen have differing approaches—or mental models—with respect to fish and game, and that these differences lead to misunderstanding, stereotyping, and conflict. Menominee look at the practice of hunting and fishing for sport as a sign of a lack of respect for nature. Whites, on the other hand, define respect for nature more on grounds of resource management and conservation. Some whites believe—contrary to fact—that Native Americans are depleting animal populations with excessive hunting and fishing, while the Menominee protest that they only hunt what they need and make extensive use of their catch. Yet the authors find that, despite these differences, the two groups share the fundamental underlying goal of preserving fish and game for future generations, and both groups see hunting and fishing as deeply meaningful activities. At its core, the conflict between these two groups is more about mistrust and stereotyping than actual disagreement over values. Combining the strengths of psychology and anthropology, Culture and Resource Conflict shows how misunderstandings about the motives of others can lead to hostility and conflict. As debates over natural resources rage worldwide, this unique book demonstrates the obstacles that must be overcome for different groups to reach consensus over environmental policy.

Book Adolescent Focused Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa

Download or read book Adolescent Focused Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa written by James Lock and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From pioneering family-based treatment developer James Lock, this is the first comprehensive guide to adolescent-focused therapy (AFT) for anorexia nervosa (AN), an evidence-based individual approach. AFT is an effective alternative to family-based treatment that may be a better fit for some patients. Lock explains how AN serves as a maladaptive response to developmental challenges of adolescence. He presents a manualized framework for helping adolescents find more adaptive coping strategies, manage difficult emotions, and develop greater autonomy and a stronger sense of self, while reducing risky behaviors and restoring weight. AFT emphasizes the therapist–patient alliance and involves parents in a supportive role. Rich case material and sample dialogues illustrate how to implement each phase of the approach. AFT is recognized as a best practice for the treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescents by the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
