Book excerpt: Once a probability distribution map is in place, areas with higher probabilities are searched first in order to find the missing person in the shortest expected time. When using a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to support search, the onboard video camera should cover as much of the important areas as possible within a set time. We explore several algorithms (with and without set destination) and describe some novel techniques in solving this path-planning problem and compare their performances against typical WiSAR scenarios. This problem is NP-hard, but our algorithms yield high quality solutions that approximate the optimal solution, making efficient use of the limited UAV flying time. The capability of planning a path with a set destination also enables the UAV operator to plan a path strategically while letting the UAV plan the path locally.

Book excerpt: This book proposes some novel approaches for finding unmanned aerial vehicle trajectories to reach targets with unknown location in minimum time. At first, it reviews probabilistic search algorithms that have been used for dealing with the minimum time search (MTS) problem, and discusses how metaheuristics, and in particular the ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO), can help to find high-quality solutions with low computational time. Then, it describes two ACO-based approaches to solve the discrete MTS problem and the continuous MTS problem, respectively. In turn, it reports on the evaluation of the ACO-based discrete and continuous approaches to the MTS problem in different simulated scenarios, showing that the methods outperform in most all the cases over other state-of-the-art approaches. In the last part of the thesis, the work of integration of the proposed techniques in the ground control station developed by Airbus to control ATLANTE UAV is reported in detail, providing practical insights into the implementation of these methods for real UAVs.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the interest of investigating intelligent systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have increased in popularity due to their large range of capabilities such as on-line obstacle avoidance, autonomy, search and rescue, fast prototyping and integration in the National Air Space (NAS). Many research efforts currently focus on system robustness against uncertainties but do not consider the probability of readjusting tasks based on the remaining resources to successfully complete the mission. In this thesis, an intelligent algorithm approach is proposed along with decision-making capabilities to enhance UAVs post-failure performance. This intelligent algorithm integrates a set of path planning algorithms, a health monitoring system and a power estimation approach. Post-fault conditions are considered as unknown uncertainties that unmanned vehicles could encounter during regular operation missions. In this thesis, three main threats are studied : the presence of unknown obstacles in the environment, sub-system failures, and low power resources. A solution for adapting to new circumstances is addressed by enabling autonomous decision-making and re-planning capabilities in real time.
