Book excerpt: Why is the moth attracted to the very glow that will kill it? A maniacal killer is preying upon a firefighter's family, stripping them from his life: one by one; piece by piece. It took every ounce of energy Lieutenant Gabe McLaughlin possessed in resisting the undertow of a mental breakdown as his best friend, Detective Jeff Spencer, told him the horrific news. And Jeff was fighting the same fight, against the same psychological beast, as he uttered the grisly details: Gabe's mother, Ira McLaughlin, had been butchered to death: Dissected... slowly. Apparently, the killer took pleasure in cutting off appendages- one section at a time- at each of the major joints in the extremities. A tourniquet had been applied preventing massive blood loss... the victim eventually succumbed to shock. As insult to injury, the killer had also etched a note into the victims torso: will U-turn and look the other way, or watch while I kill? -KiLLuR

Book excerpt: In this impressively researched and incisive book, Bruce Grierson draws on over three hundred stories of so-called "U-turners," who have risked their livelihoods to answer a sudden wake-up call. We meet people who change political parties and careers, doctors who quit to become poets, men who become women, people who suddenly become revolutionaries for a cause they didn't care about the day before. In chapters that address everything from the neuroscience behind epiphanies to the possibility of "forcing" a U-turn, Grierson brilliantly describes and elucidates this powerful, mysterious phenomenon, and in doing so illuminates all of our continual struggles with life choices and identity.

Book excerpt: Elegant, brutal, and profound—this magnificent debut captures the grit and glory of modern Hawai'i with breathtaking force and accuracy. In a stunning collection that announces the arrival of an incredible talent, Kristiana Kahakauwila travels the islands of Hawai'i, making the fabled place her own. Exploring the deep tensions between local and tourist, tradition and expectation, façade and authentic self, This Is Paradise provides an unforgettable portrait of life as it’s truly being lived on Maui, Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. In the gut-punch of “Wanle,” a beautiful and tough young woman wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a legendary cockfighter. With striking versatility, the title story employs a chorus of voices—the women of Waikiki—to tell the tale of a young tourist drawn to the darker side of the city’s nightlife. “The Old Paniolo Way” limns the difficult nature of legacy and inheritance when a patriarch tries to settle the affairs of his farm before his death. Exquisitely written and bursting with sharply observed detail, Kahakauwila’s stories remind us of the powerful desire to belong, to put down roots, and to have a place to call home.

Expecting little more than a weekend diversion, Lewis finds himself in a mystical place where two worlds meet, in the time-between-times--and in the heart of a battle between good and evil. The ancient Celts admitted no separation between this world and the Otherworld: the two were delicately interwoven, each dependent on the other. The Paradise War crosses the thin places between this world and that, as Lewis Gillies comes face-to-face with an ancient mystery--and a cosmic catastrophe in the making.

Book excerpt: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before Two centuries after James Cook's epic voyages of discovery, Tony Horwitz takes readers on a wild ride across hemispheres and centuries to recapture the Captain’s adventures and explore his embattled legacy in today’s Pacific. Horwitz, a Pulitzer Prize-winner and author of Confederates in the Attic, works as a sailor aboard a replica of Cook’s ship, meets island kings and beauty queens, and carouses the South Seas with a hilarious and disgraceful travel companion, an Aussie named Roger. He also creates a brilliant portrait of Cook: an impoverished farmboy who became the greatest navigator in British history and forever changed the lands he touched. Poignant, probing, antic, and exhilarating, Blue Latitudes brings to life a man who helped create the global village we inhabit today.

Book Steps to Paradise

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Climacus
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2016-05
  • ISBN : 1365084744
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Steps to Paradise written by John Climacus and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in English, we present Fra. Luis de Granada's "Libro de la Escala Espiritual", (1562) of J. Climacus' "Ladder of Divine Ascent." This work is from his initial effort of 1551. This particular work has endured more than any other ascetic wring. It remains the most influential early work regarding ascetic practices and deep spiritual growth for those who are and are not under a vowed vocation. The chain of this thought is preserved in the writings of Symeon the New Theologian, a 10th century "Climacus type figure", who likewise has a dual thread in his spirituality. In the early 20th century, L. Moore makes a comment, in his translation of "Ladder of Divine Ascent". A few centuries later, Nicholas of Cusa, makes a compelling remark in one of his later works, "On Seeing God." By the early 1500's Nil Sorsky will continue the link to Climacus and other hesychast practitioners. Lastly, the late V. Loskky has also cited this issue.
