Book The Limits to Power

Download or read book The Limits to Power written by Yaacov Ro'i and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Limits to Power (1979) analyses the spectrum of Soviet interests and policies in the Middle East following the Yom Kippur War of October 1973: how the Soviets handled the oil question, military and economic aid, policy toward Egypt, Syria, Iraq, the Palestinian organisations – and toward Israel itself. The Soviet position in the Middle East in 1970 was as the dominant foreign power in the region, and this book examines the events and actions that resulted, under a decade later, in such a sharp reversal in Soviet fortunes. The ebb-and-flow of Soviet diplomacy, as it emerges from the wealth of official statements and press material, is examined in detail.

Book United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East

Download or read book United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East written by Syed-Amjad Ali and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after World War II the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union developed as the Cold War. Both powers attempted to extend their spheres of influence whilst at the same time accusing each other of creating instability and threatening world peace. The Middle East was one of the important regions where both attempted to increase their own influence and undermine that of their rival. The Middle East had long been under Western influence but the establishment of Isreal with Anglo-American support alienated the Arabs. The Isreali aspiration towards a purely Jewish state and their refusal, despite international pressure, to resettle Palestinian refugees was endorsed by the United States as necessary for Isreali security. The United States support for Isreal drove President Nasser to move towards the Eastern bloc which raised the temperature of great power rivalry in that zone and nearly led to direct confrontation in 1973. United States policy of containment was first threatened by the Czech-Egyptian arms deal of 1955 with unexpected revolutions in Iraq, in 1958, and Libya in 1969 giving the Soviet Union the opportunity to further develop their footing in the area. United States efforts to contain Soviet influence proved fruitless when the Arab states in the region refused to join in military alliances sponsored by the United States. United States policy was perceived as endorsing every Isreali move from making the Palestinians homeless in 1948 to the forceful evacuation of the P.L.O. from Lebanon in 1382. The United States was successful in so far as Egypt was removed from the Soviet orbit, but the Camp David agreement isolated Egypt from the rest of the Arab world. The Palestinian Problem remains unsolved and, so long as it remains, so also does the danger of direct confrontation between the super powers in this region.
