Book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus

Download or read book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus written by Sotiris Rizas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is the interplay between Realism and Human Rights in the formulation of US policy towards Greece and Turkey with respect to the Cyprus and the Aegean disputes and the domestic politics of the two countries from the Truman to the Carter administration. The policies of successive administrations, and those of Johnson and Nixon in the 1960s and 1970s, were formulated upon the requirements of containment as this was conceived in 1946-47 by the Truman administration. Realpolitik dominated the agenda and issues related to values and norms were secondary although not unimportant. Whenever a choice had to be made between realpolitik and human rights the former was the main consideration of American policy-makers. Although committed to the recalibration of US foreign policy toward human rights, the Carter administration did not depart from these premises in the formulation of its policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Book U S Policy Toward Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book U S Policy Toward Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean written by F. Stephen Larrabee and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprus issue has been a problem for the United States for the last forty years. Failure to pay attention to Cyprus led to major crises during the Cold War, especially the 1974 crisis, resulting in Greece's temporary withdrawal from NATO's military command and significant deterioration of US relations with Greece and Turkey. Cyprus remains a potential threat to stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, which could lead to renewed confrontation between Greece and Turkey, threatening security in the Mediterranean and possibly spilling into other areas, particularly the Balkans. Prospects for settlement of the Cyprus issue remain dim, primarily because of the domestic situation in Turkey, and the EU's decision to keep Turkey off its list of countries for accession negotiations. Until the EU develops a coherent, long-term, integrated strategy toward Turkey and Cyprus, chances for a political settlement of the Cyprus issue remain poor.

Book The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations written by Joachim Koops and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 1031 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations presents an innovative, authoritative, and accessible examination and critique of the United Nations peacekeeping operations. Since the late 1940s, but particularly since the end of the cold war, peacekeeping has been a central part of the core activities of the United Nations and a major process in global security governance and the management of international relations in general. The volume will present a chronological analysis, designed to provide a comprehensive perspective that highlights the evolution of UN peacekeeping and offers a detailed picture of how the decisions of UN bureaucrats and national governments on the set-up and design of particular UN missions were, and remain, influenced by the impact of preceding operations. The volume will bring together leading scholars and senior practitioners in order to provide overviews and analyses of all 65 peacekeeping operations that have been carried out by the United Nations since 1948. As with all Oxford Handbooks, the volume will be agenda-setting in importance, providing the authoritative point of reference for all those working throughout international relations and beyond.

Book The Cyprus Question as an Issue of Turkish Foreign Policy and Turkish American Relations 1959 2003

Download or read book The Cyprus Question as an Issue of Turkish Foreign Policy and Turkish American Relations 1959 2003 written by Nasuh Uslu and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly focuses on the Cyprus question as a pivotal issue of Turkish foreign policy and Turkish-American relations. The Cyprus question was a constant factor in US-Turkish relations in the past and it still conditions the Turkish-American alliance, which is an important element of the present international relations. The period covered in this book is from 1960-1975. After experiencing a perfect honeymoon period in the 1950s, the durability, strength and cohesion of the US-Turkish alliance were tested by severe problems between 1960 and 1975. At the core of all the problems was there the Cyprus question, affecting the general tendency of the relationship between the two countries and the attitude of policy-makers of both states. Finally, the period covering from 1974 onward up to the present is generally studied with particular emphasis on Turkish-American relations and a supplementary chapter at the end of the book gives the latest developments from the Turkish point of view.

Coverage of bilateral U.S.-Turkish relations focuses on the Cyprus issue"--Overview.

Book The Cyprus Conspiracy

  • Author : Brendan O'Malley
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2001-06-25
  • ISBN : 085771192X
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book The Cyprus Conspiracy written by Brendan O'Malley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-06-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974 the Greek colonels ousted the Greek-Cypriot leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and Turkey retaliated by invading and seizing a third of the island. Cyprus remains split in two, like Berlin before the wall came down, bristling with troops and spying bases, and permanently policed by the United Nations. Henry Kissinger claimed he could do nothing to stop the coup because of the Watergate crisis, but this book presents evidence to support the view that it was no failure of American foreign policy, but the realization of a long-term plot. The authors describe the strategic reasons for Washington's need to divide the island. Their account encompasses an international cast of characters that includes Eden, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kissinger, Wilson, Callaghan, Grivas, and the leaders of the two halves of the divided island, Clerides and Denktas.
