Book excerpt: Letters replying to Pedersen's invitation to attend the 1972 reunion of the Navy Pre-Flight School (known as the V-5 program, later V-12) located at the University of Iowa during World War II. The first is type script on White House stationary and signed by David. N. Parker, staff assistant to President Richard Nixon. Dated December 2, 1971, the letter says that the President will not be able to attend. The second letter hand written by John Glenn on January 18, 1972 also declines the invitation, but identifies the room in the University of Iowa's Quad building that Glenn lived in. The University of Iowa in Iowa City was one of five campuses in the United States selected to provide pre-flight training for naval aviators during Wold War II. Richard Nixon served as an officer at the Ottumwa, Iowa Naval Reserve Aviation base from October 1942 to May 1943, but had no direct link to the University of Iowa. Glenn attended pre-flight training in Iowa City after volunteering for the U.S. Navy V-5 pre-flight training school. Glenn completed the program in the summer of 1942 as a Naval Reservist, but transferred to the Marine Corps and was commissioned a second lieutenant in March 1943. The V-5 program at the State University of Iowa consisted primarily of physical conditioning and outdoor survival.

Book Enlisted Naval Aviation Pilots

Download or read book Enlisted Naval Aviation Pilots written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 1890s through the late 1920s saw an explosion in serious long fiction by women in the United States. Considering a wide range of authors--African American, Asian American, white American, and Native American--this book looks at the work of seventeen writers from that period: FrancesEllen Harper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Sarah Orne Jewett, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Kate Chopin, Pauline Hopkins, Gertrude Stein, Mary Austin, Sui Sin Far, Willa Cather, Humishuma, Jessie Fauset, Edith Wharton, Ellen Glasgow, Anzia Yezierska, Edith Summers Kelley, and Nella Larsen. The discussionfocuses on the differences in their work and the similarities that unite them, particularly their determination to experiment with narrative form as they explored and voiced issues of power for women. Analyzing the historical context that both enabled and limited American women writers at the turnof the century, Ammons provides detailed readings of many texts and offers extensive commentary on the interaction between race and gender. This book joins the deepening discussion of modern women writers' creation of themselves as artists and raises fundamental questions about the shape of Americanliterary history as it has been constructed in the academy.

Book U S Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Aviation Volume I 1916 1942 Chronology

Download or read book U S Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Aviation Volume I 1916 1942 Chronology written by Wayne H. Heiser, 8th and published by Wayne Heiser. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a chronological account of the establishment of Naval Reserve Aviation and its growth and development before World War II. It is a comprehensive history of Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Aviation - a documentation of the significant events in that history, together with many which would fall under the category of trivia. It is an attempt to illustrate what the Naval Aviation Reserve was all about, and to capture some of the flavor of the earlier days of aviation. The book, Volume I of a series on Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Aviation, may stir the memories of some of those people directly involved in these activities during the period covered. It should also prove interesting to others who might have an interest in the Naval Air Reserve and/or in early aviation.
