Business to Developing Nations: Should the U. S. Government Do More? International technology transfer, the process of trans ferring a product and/or the know-how and capability needed to use a body of existing technical knowledge, has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. Although the subject has been a concern since World War II, it was usually discussed with different terminology and within a military strategic context. However, as the U. S. Became more involved in international economic relations, the term assumed broader implications. Today, the subject is dis cussed within the context of (1) national security or the east-west aspect of technology transfer to American adversaries, (2) U. 8. Economic competitiveness, sometimes entitled the north-north aspect of technology transfer among the industrialized nations, and (3) assistance to developing nations or the north-south aspects of tech nology transfer from the industrialized nations to the Third World. The technology transfer process is embedded in trade, investment, and foreign assistance programs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fundamental Role of Science and Technology in International Development

Download or read book The Fundamental Role of Science and Technology in International Development written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-05-24 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2003 the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Research Council (NRC) entered into a cooperative agreement. The agreement called for the NRC to examine selected aspects of U.S. foreign assistance activities-primarily the programs of the USAID-that have benefited or could benefit from access to strong science, technology, and medical capabilities in the United States or elsewhere. After considering the many aspects of the role of science and technology (S&T) in foreign assistance, the study led to the publication of The Fundamental Role of Science and Technology in International Development. In the book special attention is devoted to partnerships that involve the USAID together with international, regional, U.S. governmental, and private sector organizations in fields such as heath care, agriculture and nutrition, education and job creation, and energy and the environment. This book explores specific programmatic, organizational, and personnel reforms that would increase the effective use of S&T to meet the USAID's goals while supporting larger U.S. foreign policy objectives.

Book Global Integration and Technology Transfer

Download or read book Global Integration and Technology Transfer written by Bernard M. Hoekman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of international technology diffusion (ITD) for economic development can hardly be overstated. Both the acquisition of technology and its diffusion foster productivity growth. Developing countries have long sought to use both national policies and international agreements to stimulate ITD. The 'correct' policy intervention, if any, depends critically upon the channels through which technology diffuses internationally and the quantitative effects of the various diffusion processes on efficiency and productivity growth. Neither is well understood. New technologies may be embodied in goods and transferred through imports of new varieties of differentiated products or capital goods and equipment, they may be obtained through exposure to foreign buyers or foreign investors or they may be acquired through arms-length trade in intellectual property, e.g., licensing contracts. 'Global Integration and Technology Transfer' uses cross-country and firm level panel data sets to analyze how specific activities exporting, importing, FDI, joint ventures impact on productivity performance.

Book Transfer of Technology to Developing Countries

Download or read book Transfer of Technology to Developing Countries written by Bernard M. Hoekman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors analyze national and international policy options to encourage the international transfer of technology, distinguishing between four major channels of such transfer: trade in products, trade in knowledge, foreign direct investment, and intra-national and international movement of people. They develop a typology of country types and appropriate policy rules of thumb as a guide to both national policymakers and rule making in the World Trade Organization, as policies should differentiate between countries. The authors also develop some rules of thumb for policy intervention. These include: 1) Liberal trade policies for all types of countries; 2) Temporary encouragement of foreign direct investment inflows for low-income countries; 3) Licensing for technical transformation and adaptive investments by local firms to apply technologies; 4) Policy options for source economies to encourage international transfer of technology to poor countries, including fiscal incentives, improvement of flows of public-domain technologies with appropriate subsidies, and price differentiation for exports of intellectual property products.
