Book U S Broadband Issues

Download or read book U S Broadband Issues written by Chester Rios and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While broadband is available to a majority of Americans, barriers have kept some from subscribing and enjoying its benefits. In 2010, FCC published the National Broadband Plan, which noted that some demographic groups lagged behind others in adopting broadband and called on FCC and NTIA to take action to address these barriers. This book examines benefits of home broadband adoption; barriers to adoption and approaches to address them; and the extent to which FCC and NTIA have assessed efforts and set goals to address barriers. It also examines broadband performance information available to consumers and its limitations, if any; and FCC's actions to evaluate its efforts to provide consumers with broadband performance information.

Book The Broadband Problem

Download or read book The Broadband Problem written by Charles H. Ferguson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-04-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Internet revolution continues to unfold and transform telecommunications, pressure is building for faster, less expensive, and more widely accessible broadband service. Such a development would facilitate improved and less expensive traditional applications such as voice telephony and web browsing. It would also enable new and useful applications such as Internet-based television, videoconferencing, and software distribution. Broadband has great potential to improve efficiency and productivity, even to improve national security in some cases. Broadband service and affordability, however, have consistently lagged well behind demand and progress in information technology, with damaging results. The Internet revolution remains incomplete and threatens to stagnate if the situation continues. In The Broadband Problem, economist and technology entrepreneur Charles H. Ferguson explains the causes and ramifications of this damaging bottleneck, and he offers suggestions on improving the current state of affairs. He asserts that current telecommunications law and policy have not provided sufficient levels of new entry, competition, and innovation in the local telecom market. The continuing dominance of ILECs (incumbent local exchange carriers) in that market impedes the healthy, and much-needed, development of an efficient broadband market. The result of these policy and market failures is inadequate technological progress, innovation, and productivity in advanced Internet services and telecommunication services generally. The broadband problem is holding us back, and thus must be addressed and solved. With this important volume, Charles Ferguson has contributed mightily to that mission.

Book Integrated Broadband Networks

Download or read book Integrated Broadband Networks written by M.C.J. Elton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated broadband networks (IBNs), when compared to high definition television, are seen by many as probably being more important to the future industrial competitiveness of the United States in the telecommunications field, and as certainly raising far more complex issues of economics, law, regulation, and social impact. The first concerted attempt to identify and investigate these issues was started in 1987 by a leading US telecommunications policy research center. This book presents key contributions to that study, each written by a leading authority in his field. Its breadth of coverage does justice to the multifaceted nature of the core policy issues; its scholarly standards make it a valuable resource for future researchers; and its relevance to immediate policy concerns makes it required reading for those who need to understand what will continue to be a highly controversial public debate for a long time to come.

Book Broadband Race A Case Study on the Status of Connectivity in the United States

Download or read book Broadband Race A Case Study on the Status of Connectivity in the United States written by Peyman Pouryeganeh and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, University of Warwick (Warwick Business School), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a clear and complete image of the current status of wireline broadband connectivity in the United States. By reviewing the existing literature, this paper gathers the necessary data to capture an image of the US wireline broadband industry and its market structure. The study also examines the relevant academic concepts and theories that could provide an explanation for the higher broadband prices and lower broadband speeds in the country. A customized research methodology is used to carry out the research project. Primary research in the form of a consumer survey is used to specifically address the research questions by collecting the relevant primary data. Secondary research is conducted to collect and synthesize data produced by others to grasp the realities of the U.S. broadband industry and its business environment. The focus of the primary research is to verify the industry and market structure by viewing it from the consumers' point of view and to investigate the immediate impacts of higher prices and lower speeds on consumers. The secondary research is carried out to analyze and discuss the underlying causes for the current low level of competition within the industry. This study finds that two strategic groups - namely Telco and CATV, currently dominate the US broadband industry classifying it as a highly concentrated oligopoly. Nevertheless, the broadband competition in the United States has a duopoly nature since each customer has at most access to two access providers - typically one in each dominant strategic group. The current level of internal rivalry in the industry is low. This is due to the fact that firms with "spheres of influence" meet each other in multiple geographic markets simultaneously, which leads to the phenomenon of "mutual forbear

Book National Broadband Deployment and the Digital Divide

Download or read book National Broadband Deployment and the Digital Divide written by Sylvia Vargas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "digital divide" is a term that has been used to characterize a gap between "information haves and have-nots," or in other words, between those Americans who use or have access to telecommunications and information technologies and those who do not. One important subset of the digital divide debate concerns high-speed Internet access and advanced telecommunications services, also known as broadband. Today, Americans turn to broadband Internet access service for every facet of daily life, from finding a job to finding a doctor, from connecting with family to making new friends, from becoming educated to being entertained. The availability of sufficient broadband capability can erase the distance to high-quality health care and education, bring the world into homes and schools, drive American economic growth, and improve the nation's global competitiveness. New technologies and services such as real-time distance learning, telemedicine, and higher quality video services are being offered in the market today and are pushing demand for higher broadband speeds. This book discusses progress and issues of national broadband deployment and the digital divide.

Book Internet Management Issues A Global Perspective

Download or read book Internet Management Issues A Global Perspective written by Haynes, John D. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is tempting to think that, in the year 2001, our technology is very sophisticated and accordingly, it is very tempting to believe that present-day computer technology is "very advanced" (begging the question of to what?). The fact is that we have only just begun to develop computer technology, and the recent implementation of the Internet brings us to a special threshold in that development. Development stages require very careful and thoughtful management. What we do now in this present development stage will be profoundly important for future generations. The management of the foundation for the 'evolution' of computer technology is a very special case because it will also become intimately connected with the management of mankind itself, not only in groups or collectively but also, eventually, as a species.
