Book excerpt: The book examines the United States Border Patrol's (USBP) deployment of fencing and vehicle barriers along the U.S. southern border to impede the illegal entry of pedestrians and vehicles. Begun in 1990 and buttressed with a secondary layer of fencing in 1996 to deter illegal entries and drug smuggling in the San Diego sector, the USBP's 14 mile-long San Diego "primary fence" formed part of its "Prevention Through Deterrence" strategy to reduce smuggling and illegal migration by placing agents and resources directly on the border.

  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book On the Line written by Erich Krauss and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Border Patrol is much more than a glorified checkpoint force, rounding up illegal aliens and smugglers as they make their way across our northern and southern borders. In the wake of September 11, 2001, the mission of the Border Patrol has been fundamentally redefined, with emphasis shifting from stopping the flow of drugs and illegal immigration to the critical mission of protecting our vast borders from terrorist infiltration. Agents patrol some 8,000 miles of United States borderlands in helicopters, four-wheel-drive trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles, as well as on horseback, by bicycle, and on foot. These dedicated men and women learn to clear buildings like the most highly skilled SWAT teams, and their knowledge of immigration law rivals that of many attorneys. The job is lonely, hard and dangerous. Agents often operate in remote areas where their backup can be hours away, forcing them to rely on their instincts and training to confront criminals, and, on many occasions, to save their own lives.

Book Border Security

Download or read book Border Security written by James R. Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written recently concerning the relationship between illegal immigration and border security (or the lack thereof). The concept of border security affects all of us, directly or indirectly. It seems that the closer we get physically to the border (any border), the more we are affected (by border security), and the more we consider it a real and valid concern. Filled with relevant information, this holistic approach provides a timely foundation for anyone interested in the topic. Descriptive and analytical, the text is designed to offer undergraduates in Homeland Security and Criminal Justice a balanced and up-to-date overview of what border security is, as well as the constant revisions to it that have occurred over the past 109 years. In this book, authors Phelps, Dailey and Koenigsberg describe and discuss: Various definitions of "borders," including geographical, political, and economic What "border security" actually is, in relation to different types of borders and how the concept developed historically The classical concepts of border security, including the Walled City, Hadrian''s Wall, the Maginot and Seigfried Lines, and the Great Walls of China Border Patrol Operations, from 1904 to present day Present-day physical border security, including the various Border Fences, Operation Gatekeeper, and the effects of illegal immigration Maritime border security The relationship between border security and transnational crime Transportation security as impacted by borders "Solutions" to security along both the southern and northern borders of the United States "I believe this is the most comprehensive work on border protection yet published by anyone to include the Federal government. It is the most comprehensive document for understanding the global history and contemporary context for every form of domestic and international border transgression from land, air, sea and cyber. Everyone seeking to understand the long term consequences of this problem must read it." -- Robert Scales, MG (U.S. Army, Ret.), retired Major General, formerly commanded the Army War College. "This book is a definitive work on the concept of ''borders'' and how governments over time view, employ and enforce them. The authors demonstrate extensive research and vast scholarship; the book is suitable for reference or general reading. It should be read by all members of Congress and border security public policy experts for a broader and deeper understanding of how borders function. The section that covers the different definitions of borders is excellent and thought-provoking." -- Diana Washington Valdez, border journalist, author and political science professor based in El Paso, Texas. "...the definitive tome on the topic as it relates to US border security perceptions, practices, and issues. The work is both comprehensive in scope and holistic in its approach....In summation, Border Security is a comprehensive and in-depth work on border -- and homeland -- security with excellent utility for both undergraduate and graduate level courses. It establishes a baseline for more focused discussions on a wide range of important topics intimately tied to the international problem of homeland security. Further, Border Security provides detailed coverage of both historical and contemporary issues in a clear and concise manner for the university student and should be considered essential reading for anyone wanting to participate in border security discussions." -- Dr. Robert J. Bunker, Distinguished Visiting Professor and Minerva Chair, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College, in Homeland Security Affairs "I was tasked with creating a course on smuggling, naturally I think about border security as well. My students will be happy to know this is the only book they need. Between it and my Homeland Security experience, everything is covered from the types of smuggling on the US/Mexico border to maritime issues as well." -- Tad Smith, Lamar University, instructor PowerPoint slides are available upon adoption. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The government reports included in this book range from June to September 2018 and examine US border control and security. The first report is focused on the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and began operations in 2003. This report examines the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office of Strategy, Policy and Plans as well as its Sub-Offices. According to Border Patrol data, in Fiscal year 2017, Border Patrol agents apprehended 304,000 illegal entrants. Additionally, the US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) spent approximately $2.3 billion between 2007 and 2015 to deploy physical barriers along the nearly 2,000-mile southwest border. In January and March 2017, the President issues a series of executive orders related to border security and immigration. The fourth report included in this book reviews the agencies' implementation of the executive orders and related spending. Finally, the processes for tracking and unifying separated families are looked at and the progress and challenges in recruiting, hiring and retaining law enforcement personnel for US Customers and Border Protection is discussed in detail.

Download or read book Border Policing written by Holly M. Karibo and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary group of borderlands scholars provide the first expansive comparative history of the way North American borders have been policed—and transgressed—over the past two centuries. An extensive history examining how North American nations have tried (and often failed) to police their borders, Border Policing presents diverse scholarly perspectives on attempts to regulate people and goods at borders, as well as on the ways that individuals and communities have navigated, contested, and evaded such regulation. The contributors explore these power dynamics though a series of case studies on subjects ranging from competing allegiances at the northeastern border during the War of 1812 to struggles over Indian sovereignty and from the effects of the Mexican Revolution to the experiences of smugglers along the Rio Grande during Prohibition. Later chapters stretch into the twenty-first century and consider immigration enforcement, drug trafficking, and representations of border policing in reality television. Together, the contributors explore the powerful ways in which federal authorities impose political agendas on borderlands and how local border residents and regions interact with, and push back against, such agendas. With its rich mix of political, legal, social, and cultural history, this collection provides new insights into the distinct realities that have shaped the international borders of North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News media and pundits too frequently perpetuate the notion that Latinos, particularly Mexicans, are an invading force bent on reconquering land once their own and destroying the American way of life. In this book, Leo R. Chavez contests this assumption's basic tenets, offering facts to counter the many fictions about the "Latino threat." With new discussion about anchor babies, the DREAM Act, and recent anti-immigrant legislation in Arizona and other states, this expanded second edition critically investigates the stories about recent immigrants to show how prejudices are used to malign an entire population—and to define what it means to be American.
