Book Fear and Loathing in the North

Download or read book Fear and Loathing in the North written by Cordelia Heß and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the scarcity of sources regarding actual Jewish and Muslim communities and settlements, there has until now been little work on either the perception of or encounters with Muslims and Jews in medieval Scandinavia and the Baltic Region. The volume provides the reader with the possibility to appreciate and understand the complexity of Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval North. The contributions cover topics such as cultural and economic exchange between Christians and members of other religions; evidence of actual Jews and Muslims in the Baltic Rim; images and stereotypes of the Other. The volume thus presents a previously neglected field of research that will help nuance the overall picture of interreligious relations in medieval Europe.

Book The Cosmographia of Sebastian M nster

Download or read book The Cosmographia of Sebastian M nster written by Dr Matthew McLean and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia was an immensely influential book that attempted to describe the entire world across all of human history and analyse its constituent elements of geography, history, ethnography, zoology and botany. First published in 1544 it went through thirty-five editions and was published in five languages, making it one of the most important books of the Reformation period. Beginning with a biographical study of Sebastian Münster, his life and the range of his scholarly work, this book then moves on to discuss the genre of cosmography. The bulk of the book, however, deals with the Cosmographia itself, offering a close reading of the 1550 Latin edition (the last and definitive edition worked upon by Münster). By analysing the contents of the Cosmographia it attempts to recreate how the world of the sixteenth century appeared to a scholar living in Basel, and understand what he saw and heard. Through this examination of Münster, his publications and scholarly networks, the conflicts and continuities between medieval scholarly traditions and the widening horizons of the sixteenth century are explored and revealed. Of interest to scholars of humanist culture, the Reformation and book history, this ambitious work throws into relief previously overlooked aspects of the intellectual and religious culture of the time.

Book excerpt: Volume 6 of The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin offers the first translation of the full German text of Anamnesis published in 1966. The previous English edition, translated by Gerhart Niemeyer, focused largely on the sections of Anamnesis dealing directly with Voegelin's philosophy of consciousness. It omitted some of the extensive historical studies on which the philosophy of consciousness was based. To properly understand Voegelin's work, however, it is essential to give equal weight to the empirical as well as the philosophical aspects. This complete version of Anamnesis captures the full integrity of his vision. It is at once scientific, in the sense of fidelity to the demands of historiographic scholarship, and philosophical, in exploring the significance of the texts for the meaning of human existence in society and history. Anamnesis is a pivotal work within Voegelin's intellectual odyssey. Alone among Voegelin's books, it reveals an author looking back and taking stock of his growth rather than customarily forging ahead into new regions and new problems. This critical work is both a recollection of Voegelin's own development, reaching back even to his infant memories, and a demonstration of the anamnetic method as applied to a wide range of historically remembered materials. Written as more than just a collection of essays, Anamnesis is the volume in which Voegelin works out for himself the reconceptualization of what Order and History, and by definition his central philosophical approach, is going to be. By revisiting his previous work--a departure from Voegelin's usual scholarly habits--he found at last the literary form for the kind of empirical philosophical meditation that had long absorbed his labors. Parts I and III contain biographical and meditative reflections written by Voegelin in 1943 and 1965, respectively. The first part details the breakthrough by which Voegelin recovered consciousness from the current theories of consciousness. Part III begins as a rethinking of the Aristotelian exegesis of consciousness, and then expands into new areas of awareness that had not come within the knowledge of classic philosophy. Between these two meditative selections are eight studies that demonstrate how the historical phenomena of order gave rise to the type of analysis which culminates in the meditative exploration of consciousness.

Book The Bookish Riddaras gur

Download or read book The Bookish Riddaras gur written by Geraldine Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with a fascinating, but largely neglected, area of late medieval Icelandic literature: the indigenous prose romances, generally known as riddarasogur (i.e. sagas of knights), a group of some 30 sagas composed in Iceland from the late 13th or early 14th century onwards. These sagas take place in an exotic (non-Scandinavian), vaguely chivalric, milieu and are characterized by the extensive use of foreign motifs and a strong supernatural or fabulous element. Although the riddarasogur are clearly modeled on continental chivalric romances and are influenced by the 'translated' riddarasogur (in terms of subject matter, style, and ethos), that debt tends to be limited largely to the surface attributes of romance - typically, princes on quests in exotic foreign lands which ultimately bring material rewards, noble brides, and the acquisition of new kingdoms. Contrary to European chivalric romance, however, the Icelandic riddarasogur manifest a substantial debt to medieval encyclopedic and historiographical traditions. One effect of this is to bring an element of 'biculturalism' to the textual landscapes of the riddarasogur, which suggests that their authors, and, by implication, their audiences, were familiar with both learned tradition and traditional lore, and accustomed to moving back and forth between them in creative literary composition. The author, Geraldine Barnes, has written extensively on the riddarasogur throughout her long career. The book represents the culmination of Barnes's work in this area and presents an interesting 'take' on the riddarasogur, focusing on their learned or 'bookish' elements.
