Book Word order Variation in Biblical Hebrew Poetry

Download or read book Word order Variation in Biblical Hebrew Poetry written by Nicholas P. Lunn and published by Paternoster Biblical Monographs. This book was released on 2006 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tackles the neglected subject of word order in biblical Hewbrew poetry. The fact that the order of clause constituents frequently differs from that found in prose has often been noted, but no systematic attempt has been offered by way of explanation. Here two separate factors are taken into consideration: that of purely poetic variation defamiliarisation, and that of pragmatic markedness. This work offers a new approach to the poetry of the Old Testament that will aid towards more accurate translation, exegesis, and discourse analysis of poetic texts.

Book Interpreting Hebrew Poetry

Download or read book Interpreting Hebrew Poetry written by David L. Petersen and published by Guides to Biblical Scholarship. This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... Petersen clearly demonstrates the techniques and structures utilized by the Hebrew poets with plenty of examples from the biblical text. Terminolology has become quite confusing in this area, but Petersen cuts through these difficulties. Controversial matters such as the existence and function of meter in Hebrew poetry are treated in a balanced manner. Furthermore, the book goes beyond mere demonstration of poetic features and fulfills the promise of the title by illustrating how an understanding of these features informs the interpretation of poetic passages of scripture. This is a good place to begin before moving on to the more extensive treatments of the subject by Gillingham or Alter, or the more complex and cutting edge analysis of Kugel."--Amazon.com.

Book The Structure of Classical Hebrew Poetry Isaiah 40 55

Download or read book The Structure of Classical Hebrew Poetry Isaiah 40 55 written by M.C.A. Korpel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exegesis starts with the delimitation of the pericope to be interpreted. Yet the principles for selecting passages which form the part of departure for the exegete are seldom made explicit and if one compares various commentaries and Bible translations, it soon becomes apparent that this lack of methodical transparency gives rise to a lot of confusion and dissent. In this work the authors make use of text divisions found in ancient Hebrew, Greek and Syriac manuscripts of Isaiah 40-55 (Deutero-Isaiah). For the first time the poetic structure of the text is based on controllable evidence which is roughly 500-1000 years older than the medieval Masoretic manuscripts on which all modern editions are based. The results are astonishing and raise the question why this type of evidence has been largely neglected thus far.

Download or read book The Verb in Archaic Biblical Poetry written by Tania Notarius and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Verb in Archaic Biblical Poetry: A Discursive, Typological, and Historical Investigation of the Tense System offers a comprehensive analysis of the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and discursive properties of the verb in the corpus of archaic" biblical poetry (The Song of Moses, Song of the Sea, Song of Deborah, Song of David, Blessing of Jacob, Oracles of Balaam, Blessing of Moses, and Song of Hannah). The approach integrates modern research on tense, aspect, and modality, while also addressing the complicated philological issues in these texts. The study presents discursive analysis of biblical poetic texts, systemic description of each text’s tense system, and reconstruction of the archaic verbal tenses as attested in part of the corpus.
