Book In The Typhoon s Eye

Download or read book In The Typhoon s Eye written by Bles Chavez-Bernstein and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Typhoon’s Eye is a story of childhood and growing up amidst struggle, sacrifice, and concession to a stringent reality while keeping the dreams of youth alive. The imagery of Sandig hill with its vast greenery and lush ambiance shaped the perspective of the author as a young artist. Readers will share her personal journey in nostalgic local colors that are rendered by the sound of the church bells tolling, waking up the lazy town of Ocampo, the solemn procession on Easter, the crowded Sunday market, and the seductive scents of native delicacies sold on the streets. Alcohol and post-traumatic stress disorder clouded the expression of parental love, resulting in the severe upbringing of the author and her siblings. Chavez-Bernstein has crafted her coming-of-age tale in a profoundly insightful prose. This story is rich in pathos that can grip your heart with truthful tales of human interest. Love at first sight was as real as the disrupted lives in her parents’ generation during the Second World War, which blossomed again among those born in the following generation. In The Typhoon’s Eye is a memoir portraying the author’s young life and her courageous treatment of life’s adversities. Her perseverance, passion, relentless faith, and unbreakable love of family highlight this poignant story.

Book Economics of Coastal and Water Resources Valuing Environmental Functions

This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the chapters in this volume are authored by staff or associates of the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE). CSERGE is a research centre sponsored by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which specialises in interdisciplinary work focussed on environmental management issues. Weare grateful for the long term support that we have received from the ESRC. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Ann Dixon and SHin Pearce in the preparation of this volume. vii INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1. ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS AND COASTAL ZONE ECOSYSTEMS' VALUES: AN OVERVIEW. Turner, R. K. , Bateman, I. J. and Adger, W. N. 1. 1 Coastal zone pressure and sustainable management challenges Given the continued intensification of the process of globalisation - involving population growth, population density changes via urbanisation, industrial development, increased trade and capital flows, liberalisation of transnational corporation activity and lifestyle and attitudinal changes - coastal zones and their hydrologically linked catchment areas have come under heavy environmental pressure. The scale and extent of socio-economic activities have profound implications for the now coevolving natural and human systems and their complex interrelationships (Turner, Perrings and Folke, 1997). The consequences of this process of change manifest themselves across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Indeed the juxtaposition of different spatial, functional and temporal scales that is inherent in the catchment-coastal ecosystems-seas/oceans continuum poses particularly difficult challenges for both science and resource management/governance.

Book Poseidon and the Pc

Download or read book Poseidon and the Pc written by Gary W. Neidhardt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poseidon and the PC documents the adventures of Lt. Paul W. Neidhardt (USNR) through one hundred and fifteen of his letters written to his wife during World War II. Long before PC became equated with a personal computer or politically correct, the two letters were associated with Patrol Craft. These World War II ships had the mission of performing convoy escort duty and antisubmarine warfare. The PCs were meant to relieve the larger, far more valuable ships from the often monotonous duties of sailing at the speed of the slowest ship in a convoy. The 174 foot long PCs were so small that they were considered safe duty as more worthy targets were always available. In high seas PCs floated as light as a cork in a bottle and as rough as riding a bull. A PC could entirely disappear from view in the trough of a large wave. The seasickness that resulted from the pitching and rolling of the PC was truly gut wrenching. If you didnt get sick on a PC, you were seaworthy on any other Navy ship in the fleet. Had the war not ended when it did, Poseidons typhoons might have substantially prolonged the war in the Pacific. A great typhoon sunk, beached or damaged more than two hundred American ships at Okinawa after the war had ended that were to be used for the invasion of Japan. Paul was the executive officer on one of the many PCs destroyed by this great storm, which struck on October 9, 1945. When Poseidon showed his power, Paul knew his PC needed all the help and good fortune there was to be found if they were to survive the fury of what Americans came to call Typhoon Louise.
