Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Southeast Asian Affairs is the only one of its kind: a comprehensive annual review devoted to the international relations, politics, and economies of the region and its nation-states. The collected volumes of Southeast Asian Affairs have become a compendium documenting the dynamic evolution of regional and national developments in Southeast Asia from the end of the ‘second’ Vietnam War to the alarms and struggles of today. Over the years, the editors have drawn on the talents and expertise not only of ISEAS’ own professional research staff and visiting fellows, but have also reached out to tap leading scholars and analysts elsewhere in Southeast and East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, North America, and Europe. A full list of contributors over forty years reads like a kind of who’s who in Southeast Asian Studies. Regardless of specific events and outcomes in political, economic, and social developments in Southeast Asia’s future, we can expect future editions of Southeast Asian Affairs to continue to provide the expert analysis that has marked the publication since its founding. It has become an important contributor to the knowledge base of contemporary Southeast Asia." - Donald E. Weatherbee, Russell Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of South Carolina

Download or read book Bucharest Diary written by Alfred H. Moses and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider's account of Romania's emergence from communism control In the 1970s American attorney Alfred H. Moses was approached on the streets of Bucharest by young Jews seeking help to emigrate to Israel. This became the author's mission until the communist regime fell in 1989. Before that Moses had met periodically with Romania's communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, to persuade him to allow increased Jewish emigration. This experience deepened Moses's interest in Romania—an interest that culminated in his serving as U.S. ambassador to the country from 1994 to 1997 during the Clinton administration. The ambassador's time of service in Romania came just a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. During this period Romania faced economic paralysis and was still buried in the rubble of communism. Over the next three years Moses helped nurture Romania's nascent democratic institutions, promoted privatization of Romania's economy, and shepherded Romania on the path toward full integration with Western institutions. Through frequent press conferences, speeches, and writings in the Romanian and Western press and in his meetings with Romanian officials at the highest level, he stated in plain language the steps Romania needed to take before it could be accepted in the West as a free and democratic country. Bucharest Diary: An American Ambassador's Journey is filled with firsthand stories, including colorful anecdotes, of the diplomacy, both public and private, that helped Romania recover from four decades of communist rule and, eventually, become a member of both NATO and the European Union. Romania still struggles today with the consequences of its history, but it has reached many of its post-communist goals, which Ambassador Moses championed at a crucial time. This book will be of special interest to readers of history and public affairs—in particular those interested in Jewish life under communist rule in Eastern Europe and how the United States and its Western partners helped rebuild an important country devastated by communism.

Download or read book Urban Poverty in the Wake of Environmental Disaster written by Maria Ela Atienza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the best strategies for poverty alleviation in post-disaster urban environments, and the conditions necessary for the success and scaling up of these strategies. Using the case study of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the Philippines, the strongest typhoon ever to make landfall, the book aims to draw out policy recommendations relevant for other middle- and lower-income countries facing similar urban environmental challenges. Humans are increasingly living in densely populated and highly vulnerable areas, often coastal. This increased density of human settlements leads to increased material damage and high death tolls, and this vulnerability is often exacerbated by climate change. This book focuses on urban population risk, vulnerability to disasters, resilience to environmental shocks, and adaptation in relation to paths in and out of poverty. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including primary survey data from victims and those charged with overseeing the relief effort in the Philippines, Urban Poverty in the Wake of Environmental Disaster has significant implications for disaster risk reduction as it relates to the urban poor and is highly recommended for scholars and practitioners of development studies, environment studies, and disaster relief and risk reduction.
Download or read book Contextualizing Disaster written by Gregory V. Button and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contextualizing Disaster offers a comparative analysis of six recent "highly visible" disasters and several slow-burning, "hidden," crises that include typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes, chemical spills, and the unfolding consequences of rising seas and climate change. The book argues that, while disasters are increasingly represented by the media as unique, exceptional, newsworthy events, it is a mistake to think of disasters as isolated or discrete occurrences. Rather, building on insights developed by political ecologists, this book makes a compelling argument for understanding disasters as transnational and global phenomena.

Download or read book Displaced by Disaster written by Ann-Margaret Esnard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displacement has traditionally been conceptualized as a phenomenon that results from conflict or other disruptions in developing or unstable countries. Hurricane Katrina shattered this notion and highlighted the various dilemmas of population displacement in the United States. The dilemmas stem from that of inconsistent terminology and definitions; lack of efforts to quantify displacement risk potential and that factor displacement vulnerability into community plans; lack of understanding of differential needs of "displacees" especially during long-term recovery periods; and policy and institutional responses (or lack thereof) especially as it relates to post-disaster sheltering and housing. Incorporating relevant examples, cases, and policies Esnard and Sapat look at the experience of other countries and how the international community has dealt with hundreds of thousands of individuals who have been forced to leave their homes. Displaced by Disaster addresses such issues from a planning and policy perspective informed by scholarship in disciplines such as emergency management; political science; sociology and anthropology. It is ideal for students and practitioners working in the areas of disaster management, planning, public administration and policy, housing, and the many disciplines connected to disaster issues.

Download or read book Wrath of the Sea written by Albert Mulles and published by Nuova Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when the world's most powerful typhoon catch you in its midst? Described as the mother of all typhoons, the destruction that followed was unprecedented in history. 6-meter high storm surges swallowed entire towns and suburbs in minutes, trapping people in their houses. There was no way people could have survived the initial waves. This is the story of the survivors on that fateful day in 2013. A story told by the survivors themselves. “The catastrophe that can happen due to global warming and climate change is what this typhoon indicates to the world and it is an eye-opener for humanity in general. An excellent book that throws light on the devastation caused by nature’s fury and the road to recovery after the loss.” - Reader’s Favorite "Super! A must read. I have read it twice." -Bill Biddle "An emotional and powerful book. Truly stunning." -Reiko Yamaguchi The story recounts the dark episode of the Typhoon Haiyan tragedy that occurred for a span of twelve days. This is a story of the survivors and their eyewitness accounts of what really happened on the ground amidst the impending humanitarian crisis that saw thousands die and more than half of the population fleeing the city in the face of hunger, chaos and the breakdown of law and order. With each day of delay of the rescue effort hangs the lives of thousands of survivors who depended on the timely intervention from the Philippine government. In the face of such resignation, the characters were able to survive miraculously in the face of such overwhelming odds. This story paints a picture of how human relationships are won and lost – all told from different perspectives, from the people who clung to desperation amidst the lack of food, water, and medical services. Haiyan was the strongest typhoon ever to hit landfall in recorded history. Eleven days were described by the survivors as worse than hell. With many areas not reached by aid, many have turned to scavenging, looting or worse banditry. The story follows each unique individual story, colorful on its own, on how each character managed to pull it through during those first crucial eleven days. It reconciles facts from fallacy, gathering print and downloaded data of the monstrous tragedy even as the protagonist tells it from his own point of view.
Download or read book Fragile World written by William T. Cavanaugh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fragile World: Ecology and the Church, scholars and activists from Christian communities as far-flung as Honduras, the Philippines, Colombia, and Kenya present a global angle on the global ecological crisis—in both its material and spiritual senses—and offer Catholic resources for responding to it. This volume explores the deep interconnections, for better and for worse, between the global North and the global South, and analyzes the relationship among the physical environment, human society, culture, theology, and economics—the “integral ecology” described by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’. Integral ecology demands that we think deeply about humans and the physical environment, but also about the God who both created the world and sustains it in being. At its root, the ecological crisis is a theological crisis, not only in the way that humans regard creation and their place in it, but in the way that humans think about God. For Pope Francis in Laudato Si’, the root of the crisis is that we humans have tried to put ourselves in God’s place. According to Pope Francis, therefore, “A fragile world, entrusted by God to human care, challenges us to devise intelligent ways of directing, developing, and limiting our power.”
