Its first book publication was in New York by Putnam in 1902; it was also published in Britain in Typhoon and Other Stories by Heinemann in 1903.Typhoon is a classic sea yarn, possibly based upon Conrad's actual experience of seaman's life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the steamer John P. Best (according to the book by Jerry Allen on the "Sea years of Joseph Conrad", first published in 1965). The author of the mentioned book - an American journalist - did not reveal in her book any further details. Joseph Conrad himself described it as a "recent and much-discussed incident" (Author's note to the novella).

Book excerpt: Captain McWhirr is a serious man who runs his steamer, the Nan-Shan, with efficiency and solidity. When a storm appears to be headed in their direction, MacWhirr is not concerned about his ship's ability to weather it, but, when the storm turns out to be a powerful typhoon which surges in across the Pacific Ocean headed straight for the Nan-Shan, MacWhirr and his crew must work together if they want to survive. This classic sea-faring story is believed to be based on author Joseph Conrad's real experiences at sea when he sailed aboard the John P. Best steamer under Captain John MacWhir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Typhoon" is a novel that belongs to Joseph Conrad’s early works. Like most of his books it talks about the sea, the water element and the man’s struggle with it. McVeer, the protagonist, is a captain of a steamer ‘Nyan-Shan’. A truly phlegmatic and a prosaic person, he lacks virtually any abstract thinking and imagination. But this is true only at a first glance. A horrific storm sets challenges not only for the captain, who transforms literally in front of the eyes, but also for the entire crew. Will they survive through the ambush of the element? Will the ship stand? Pretty illustrations by Dmitrii Rybalko provide you with new impressions from reading this legendary story.

Book excerpt: Typhoon - Joseph Conrad - "Typhoon and Other Stories" is a collection of four shorter works by Joseph Conrad. In the title work "Typhoon" we have a classic tale of the sea which describes how Captain MacWhirr sails the Siamese steamer "Nan-Shan" into a typhoon. "Typhoon" excellently depicts sea-faring life at the turn of the 20th century. Also included in this collection is "Amy Foster", the story of a Polish immigrant who on his way to America becomes shipwrecked off the cost of England. Since he speaks no English, he is treated as a madman and imprisoned by the local Englishmen who find him. In "Amy Foster" Conrad draws upon his Polish heritage to provide a convincing story of the difficulties arising from acclimating oneself to a foreign land. You will also find the stories "Falk: A Reminiscence" and "To-Morrow" in this collection of nautically themed works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typhoon and Other Stories Joseph Conrad - In these four stories, written between 1900 and 1902, Joseph Conrad bid gradual farewell to his adventurous life at sea and began to confront the more daunting complexities of life on land in the twentieth century. In 'Typhoon' Conrad reveals, in the steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate, the differences between instinct and intelligence in a partnership vital to human survival. 'Falk', the companion sea-story, contrasts, as Conrad once put it, 'common sentimentalism with the frank standpoint of a more or less primitive man', a man with a conscience, however, about the girl he desires. In one of the 'land-stories' Conrad explores the utter isolation of an East European emigrant in England; in the other, the plight of a woman ironically trapped by the unwitting alliance of two retired widowers - each blind in his own way.
