This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Download or read book Visions of Utopia written by Edward Rothstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the sex-free paradise of the Shakers to the worker's paradise of Marx, utopian ideas seem to have two things in common--they all are wonderfully plausible at the start and they all end up as disasters. In Visions of Utopia, three leading cultural critics--Edward Rothstein, Martin Marty, and Herbert Muschamp--look at the history of utopian thinking, exploring why they fail and why they are still worth pursuing. Edward Rothstein, New York Times cultural critic, contends that every utopia is really a dystopia--a disaster in the making--one that overlooks the nature of humanity and the impossibilities of paradise. He traces the ideal in politics and technology and suggests that only in art--and especially in music--does the desire for utopia find satisfaction. Martin Marty examines several models of utopia--from Thomas More's to a 1960s experimental city that he helped to plan--to show that, even though utopias can never be realized, we should not be too quick to condemn them. They can express dimensions of the human spirit that might otherwise be stifled and can plant ideas that may germinate in more realistic and practical soil. And Herbert Muschamp, the New York Times architectural critic, looks at Utopianism as exemplified in two different ways: the Buddhist tradition and the work of visionary Viennese architect Adolph Loos. Utopian thinking embodies humanity's noblest impulses, yet it can lead to horrors such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Regime. In Visions of Utopia, these leading thinkers offer an intriguing look at the paradoxes of paradise.

Download or read book New Green World written by Josephine Herbst and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Green World, first published in 1954, is a fascinating look at the life of American naturalist John Bartram (1699-1777) and his explorations across the newly formed United States. At his home near Philadelphia, he established America's first botanical garden, which exists to the present day. The book details his travels and interactions with prominent figures of his day, and his many discoveries and collections of plants unique to the Americas. Author's note from the first edition dust-jacket: I began to be interested in the Bartrams, father and son, because of a flower in my Pennsylvania garden but I stayed with them through New Green World because they were so alive, though long dead. Living for more than themselves, they were unafraid of new horizons and so their story breaks through parochial notions of our historical past to reach around the world. Long neglected, the Bartrams broke ground for Audubon, Thoreau and many others. The plants they rescued from the wilderness survive; the vitality of their search speaks to us today.
