This report provides some of the necessary information by describing the habitat requirements of 133 vertebrate species of north-central British Columbia in relation to two special habitat elements: wildlife trees and coarse woody debris. To make it easier for habitat managers to apply this information, requirements were condensed into a series of habitat summary tables. The tables, which are based mainly on published research reviewed up to 1995, describe in detail the varieties of wildlife trees and coarse woody debris that are required by wildlife.

This study was completed to develop a better understanding of the relationship between ecosystem and tree attributes and an established functional Wildlife Tree type classification. Data from four studies conducted in different ecosystems in central British Columbia are compared in this paper. The four study areas were: (1) boreal aspen forests, (2) mixed conifer forests in the boreal foothills, (3) mixed conifer forests in the moist interior plateau, and (4) mixed conifer forests in the interior wet belt. In each study area, tree species were evaluated by diameter classes for the percentage of live versus dead stems and functional Wildlife Tree types based on an existing classification system, and results within and among study areas were then compared. The combined tree sample size totalled almost 19 300 stems, comprising 10 different tree species. To provide a link to provincial Wildlife Tree policy, each tree's value was ranked using guidelines established by the provincial Wildlife Tree Committee."--Document.

People are justifiably concerned about what is happening to the local and global forest environments, but they are also confused by the polarized rhetoric that has characterized both sides of the debate. In Balancing Act, Hamish Kimmins calls for a balanced, more objective approach to forestry issues in order to bridge the gap between the most extreme opponents in the debate. He suggests that we need to begin with a common understanding of what forestry is about and how forest ecosystems work. Book excerpt: The Canadian government announced the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative (MPBI) in 2002 to address the socio-economic and ecological consequences of an epidemic of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins). The objective of this study was to establish baseline information on the ecological characteristics that occur at different stages of succession, resulting from mountain pine beetle disturbance at different time intervals. Key issues addressed by this study were: the post-beetle ecological character of stands; the ecological legacies that should be sought post-beetle; maintenance of ecological integrity in beetle-damaged landscapes; and the impacts of beetles on regeneration. This paper presents a study of stand conditions following two historic mountain pine beetle outbreaks events in the 1940s and 1980s. The study quantified structural and species composition of stands at different stages of succession (25 years and 65 years), and quantified the differences that occur in forest development between stands with and without disturbance by the beetle. It concludes with several recommendations for management of post-disturbance landscapes.

Book excerpt: This report describes a study conducted in the Dawson Creek Forest District of British Columbia to determine the use & availability of wildlife trees and coarse woody debris in a mixedwood forest. Wildlife trees were sampled in plots located in mature aspen stands, new-cut aspen cutblocks, regenerating aspen stands, mature mixedwood stands, natural & man-made edges in mature aspen forest, and retention patches in harvested cutblocks. Woody debris was sampled in mature aspen and mature mixedwood stands. Plots were also established around active woodpecker nest trees for comparative analysis with random sampling plots. To provide forest management recommendations, analysis was conducted on various tree characteristics among random, wildlife, and nest trees. Small mammal use of coarse woody debris was also studied. The report concludes with suggested guidelines for managing wildlife trees and coarse woody debris in mixedwood and aspen-dominated stands in north-east British Columbia.
