Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typee, a Romance of the South Sea is the first book by American writer Herman Melville. Herman Melville (1819–1891) was an American novelist, poet, and writer of short stories. A classic in the literature of travel and adventure partly based on his actual experiences as a captive on the island Nuku Hiva, which Melville spelled as Nukuheva, in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands, in 1842. The title comes from the name of a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime, but made him notorious as the "man who lived among the cannibals." Typee may have provided the writers Robert Louis Stevenson, Louis Becke and Jack London with the themes and images of the Pacific experience: cannibalism, cultural absorption, colonialism, exoticism, eroticism, natural plenty and beauty, and a perceived simplicity of native lifestyle, desires and motives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typee is Herman Melville's first novel, based on his actual experiences after having jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands. Extremely popular at the time of its initial publication, it provoked disbelief among its readers until the events it described were corroborated by Melville's fellow castaway, Richard T. GreeneHerman Melville (August 1, 1819 - September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. His best known works include Typee (1846), a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesian life, and his whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851). His work was almost forgotten during the last 30 years of his life. His writing draws on his experience at sea as a common sailor, exploration of literature and philosophy, and engagement in the contradictions of American society in a period of rapid change. He developed a complex, baroque style; the vocabulary is rich and original, a strong sense of rhythm infuses the elaborate sentences, the imagery is often mystical or ironic, and the abundance of allusion extends to biblical scripture, myth, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts.

Is there nothing fresh around us? Is there no green thing to be seen? Yes, the insideof our bulwarks is painted green; but what a vile and sickly hue it is, as if nothing bearing even thesemblance of verdure could flourish this weary way from land. Even the bark that once clung to thewood we use for fuel has been gnawed off and devoured by the captain's pig; and so long ago, too, that the pig himself has in turn been devoured. There is but one solitary tenant in the chicken-coop, once a gay and dapper young cock, bearinghim so bravely among the coy hens. But look at him now; there he stands, moping all the day long on that everlasting one leg of his.He turns with disgust from the mouldy corn before him, and the brackish water in his little trough. He mourns no doubt his lost companions, literally snatched from him one by one, and never seenagain. But his days of mourning will be few for Mungo, our black cook, told me yesterday that theword had at last gone forth, and poor Pedro's fate was sealed. His attenuated body will be laid outupon the captain's table next Sunday, and long before night will be buried with all the usualceremonies beneath that worthy individual's vest. Who would believe that there could be any one socruel as to long for the decapitation of the luckless Pedro; yet the sailors pray every minute, selfishfellows, that the miserable fowl may be brought to his end. They say the captain will never point theship for the land so long as he has in anticipation a mess of fresh meat. This unhappy bird can alonefurnish it; and when he is once devoured, the captain will come to his senses. I wish thee no harm, Pedro; but as thou art doomed, sooner or later, to meet the fate of all thy race; and if putting aperiod to thy existence is to be the signal for our deliverance, why-truth to speak-I wish thythroat cut this very moment; for, oh! how I wish to see the living earth again! The old ship herselflongs to look out upon the land from her hawse-holes once more, and Jack Lewis said right theother day when the captain found fault with his stee

Book excerpt: From its publication in 1846, Typee, Herman Melville's first book, was recognized as a classic of travel and adventure literature. Based on the author's own experiences, as well as oral and written sources, in the South Seas, Melville's story of two runaway sailors held captive by the Typees is a vivid portrait of Polynesian life. Many readers delighted in its racy scenes, but religious fundamentalists saw to it that criticism of missionaries was expurgated from the American text. Five years later, the religious press took revenge on Moby-Dick when Melville again displayed his persistent skepticism and irreverence and celebrated cultural relativity as he had done in Typee. As Melville's fame declined after the 1850s, readers forgot the old religious denunciations and remembered Typee as the best of his books. Throughout his lifetime, Melville's most famous and popular character was Fayaway. This text of Typee is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America). Book jacket.
