Book A Walk on the Beach

Download or read book A Walk on the Beach written by Buddy McCoy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a cold January afternoon when Buddy and Olivia arrived at Sea Island. They came from different corners of the state to a Georgia Association of Realtors' convention, a black tie affair that attracted nearly six hundred participants. Buddy was divorced and Olivia was a widow. Olivia smiled as she watched Buddy flirt with the young lady at the ticket counter. Little did she know his attention would become focused on her later in the evening. Whether the meeting came by chance or by destiny, the two lonely souls needed "A Walk On The Beach". Soothing music by the band after dinner was an invitation to dance. The ballroom was packed. Buddy was in the hunt. He circled the room three times leaving no stone unturned. Near the end of the third lap, he was stopped dead in his tracks. There she sat, wearing a low-cut sequined blouse, and the baby blues and the smile and the silky blond hair sent tremors through his heart. "Her beauty radiated like a beacon from a lighthouse!" It would be their first dance of many over the next few years, and at one point they danced alone to cheers from the crowd. The courtship blossomed after that first meeting, but there were challenges. Olivia lived on Tybee Island and Buddy lived in Moultrie, some four and a half hours away. Buddy did most of the driving, of course, for the chase was on. Tybee became their playground with long walks on the beach, dinner parties and romantic sunsets. Share the intimacy, humor and trials of this true love story as it unfolds through their e-mails. Feel the warmth and passion of the relationship as two adults strive to give love a second chance.

Download or read book Tybee Island written by James Mack Adams and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tybee Island is a tiny piece of land, only-two-and-a-half miles long and two-thirds of a mile wide; however, its strategic location near the mouth of the Savannah River assigned to it an important role in the birth and history of the state of Georgia. Over this coastal community five flags have flown, representing Spain, France, England, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. Using numerous vintage photographs from the archives of the Tybee Island Historical Society, Tybee Island guides the reader through over two hundred years of history. Although much of its history is linked to nearby Savannah, Tybee is singular among Georgia's coastal islands, and has a history and lore that is uniquely its own. This visual journey begins with the building of Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse, and continues through Tybee's involvement in the Civil War. Also covered are the island's later roles as a military installation, a popular coastal resort, and a residential community. Vintage photographs recall earlier days on Tybee, when the island was known as "Ocean City," "Savannah Beach," and, to some, "the best kept secret on the East Coast."

Book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book excerpt: Discover Tybee Island's historic hotel that witnessed hurricanes, wars, a riot, murder, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Tybee Island was a mostly undeveloped tropical island situated 12 miles east of Savannah in the 1880s when businessman Daniel Purse bought most of the island with the intention of transforming it into a seaside resort destination. There were no roads to Tybee at the time. To overcome the obstacle of a two-hour boat ride from Savannah, Purse built a railroad connecting Tybee to Savannah. Thousands of new tourists began flocking to Tybee's beautiful beaches, though most could not stay due to inadequate lodging accommodations. In 1889, Savannah National Bank president and future mayor of Savannah Herman Myers and investors constructed Hotel Tybee, which was one of the finest hotels in the country. For over seven decades, Hotel Tybee hosted vacations, conventions, social events, and gambling. The establishment was ravaged by fire in 1909 but was resurrected more magnificent than before.

"Wassaw Sound" brings back beloved characters and weaves a tale of intrigue in the Low Country. Spanning from the 1950's to the present, the story is centered around an actual event in which a hydrogen bomb was jettisoned into Wassaw Sound in February 1958 by a damaged B-47 bomber. While "Wassaw Sound" revolves around the story of the "Tybee Bomb," it is about much more. It speaks of the power of lifelong friendships, the pain of unrequited love, the fruitlessness of unfettered hatred, and the magnificence of faith and its power to overcome.

Book Tales from Sandfly

Download or read book Tales from Sandfly written by Rusty Danforth and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from Sandfly is the experiences of Rusty Danforth, who comes to Savannah to start life over. "Adopted" by the locals of Sandfly, a nearby town where, while using the pub/city hall as his base, he becomes familiar with the "unique" lifestyle found only here. In chapters often funny, sometimes poignant, and almost always unusual he describes his new life. He meets the country songwriter who was abducted by aliens, the bartender and former gymnast who became an unwitting porn star, and the voodoo lady who split time between making baskets at the Piggly Wiggly and hexing people. He tells of customs and celebrations found only in Savannah, like the Tacky Light Tour, in which a trolley filled with "over served" tourists search for the most disgusting display of Christmas excess and have their pictures made for use as cards afterwards; Tybee's Beach Bum, the world's largest municipally sanctioned drunken water fight; and The Isle of Hope Patriot's Parade, which featured among others, a giant crab, midgets demanding union rates, and "The Scud Stud," astride an Iraqi rocket impacting into a bevy of "I Dream of Jeanie" look-alikes. Throughout, Danforth takes the reader along for misadventures, such as learning about dangers of drinking and karaoke by ending up in traction; being trapped under the bed of his best friend and wife on their wedding night; and the value of knowing interrogation resistance when arrested for dancing the tango in the street at three in the morning. The thread binding the chapters is the story of a man in a time of loss and uncertainty, who, through the help of good friends, a bit of luck, and maybe the help of the Lord, finds happiness and love that he never dreamed possible before coming to the small town of Sandlfy.
