Book excerpt: This riveting book, although fiction, presents readers with a true picture of the perils of drug addiction, incest, physical and sexual abuse, and the dark secrets of a family. But it is also a story of hope and restoration. The author includes valuable resources in regard to childhood sexual abuse and incest that many will find useful. This book is a "must read" and recommended for all adults. - Betty Corbin Tucker, Amazon Book Reviewer Two Weeks Since my Last Confession is a moving novel of dealing with one's dark past. - Midwest Book Review A dramatically written family saga, Two Weeks Since my Last Confession is the story of one woman's survival in the face of serious childhood abuse and addiction. More than this, it is a tale that chronicles the triumph of the human spirit over its enemies - not only external enemies but also the ones we find within ourselves. When Molly O'Brien comes into the world in 1951, she never imagines her life will turn out the way it does. Born into a wealthy family in which her father is a senator and her mother a devout catholic, Molly receives a good upbringing and has all the reason in the world to be happy. Yet, somehow, at the age of thirty, she is addicted to heroin and hasn't been employed for years. Her father believes that the corrupting influences of society are at fault, while her mother is convinced it's Molly's own depravity that has caused her ruin and her failure to stay in the Catholic church. Her older brother, Sean, however, knows who is really to blame: he holds the family secrets that have caused all of his sister's problems and are leading her down the harrowing road to drug addiction. And ultimately he knows that he and his parents are the only ones who can lead her out. _______ Kate Genovese has been a registered nurse for over 30 years. She has worked in the substance abuse field, with physically and sexually abused children, as well as school nursing for five years. Kate presently works for a visiting nurse association. Her other books, Thirty years in September; A Nurses Memoir and Loving Joe Gallucci are also available in print and ebook formats.

Book 28 Years Since My Last Confession

Download or read book 28 Years Since My Last Confession written by Catherine Powers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It took so long to bring this book to print. I don't quite know why. I think maybe a few people had to die first. What I know now is that for a long time I stopped myself from getting my poetry out into the big, blue world because I followed the internal rule that I learned in my family, which was "this doesn't go outside the family." Since most of my writing was about my family this presented a conundrum. It took many years to break this rule and I still fight it almost every time I sit down to write. The book's grand themes: Death, Loss, Divorce, Bad Relationships, Toxic Family Issues, Addiction & My Catholic Upbringing. And, before you say "Wow, what a bummer," you need to know that I write with great humor and grace. That's what they say about me anyway. I like to think my work tragic and comic in the Irish tradition. Or, as my good friend, W.B. Yeats wrote, "Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy." Just change "he" to "she" and that should explain a great deal of my world view. My work has been compared to Sharon Olds, Hal Sirowitz and David Sedaris. I'm not making that up. It really has been compared to those writers. Enough! Read a few of my poems and judge for yourself.

Book Since My Last Confession

Download or read book Since My Last Confession written by Drew Bacigalupa and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-08-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual journey of a young artist at mid-20th century, Since My Last Confession sensitively probes the faith and doubts of a pre-Vatican II cradle-born Roman Catholic. Luke at an early age is profoundly influenced by priests and nuns at school, later at work he pursues, in the army during World War II, and in post-war Europe while a graduate student in Florence. A wide circle of friends and experiences introduce him to other Christian denominations and other faiths, contributing to struggles he’s known with Catholic dogma since a teenager. Irrevocably bound to a Church which he questions and from which he’s alienated, Luke’s spiritual dilemma is heightened by professional setbacks, economic hardships, and rootlessness. When he falls in love with a privileged Jewish college student, Esther, he’s forced to face hard decisions about his faith, his work, commitments. A novel in which characters struggle with the persistent dichotomies of the sacred and the profane, Since My Last Confession confronts the challenges facing all of good faith during tumultuous eras of radical social change.

Book excerpt: A “mordantly funny” novel set in a Dublin educational institution known as the Brothers of Godly Coercion School for Young Boys of Meager Means (Publishers Weekly). Combining the spirit of Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim with a bawdy evisceration of hypocrisy in old-school Catholic education, The Brothers' Lot is a comic satire that tells the story of the Brothers of Godly Coercion School for Young Boys of Meager Means, a dilapidated Dickensian institution run by an assemblage of eccentric, insane, and often nasty celibate Brothers. The school is in decline and the Brothers hunger for a miracle to move their founder, the Venerable Saorseach O’Rahilly, along the path to Sainthood. When a possible miracle presents itself, the Brothers fervently seize on it with the help of the ethically pliant Diocesan Investigator, himself hungry for a miracle to boost his career. But the school simultaneously comes under threat from strange outside forces. The harder the Brothers try to defend the school, the worse things seem to get. It takes an outsider, Finbar Sullivan, a young student newly arrived at the school, to see that the source of the threat may in fact lie inside the school itself. As the miracle unravels, the Brothers’ efforts to preserve it unleash a disastrous chain of events. Tackling a serious subject through satire, The Brothers' Lot explores the culture that allowed abuses within church-run institutions in Ireland to go unchecked for decades. “Potently conveys the anarchic spirit of schoolboy warfare.”—The Irish Times “A memorable, skillfully wrought, and evocative satire of an Ireland that has collapsed under the weight of its contradictions.”—Joseph O’Connor “Witty, brilliant, devastating.”—Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: Teacher Mr Bernard Boyle (aka Bernard0 B0ilinni Ringhi0 di R0ssi of the Orb Zeronia) was almost out of breath, but never of magical Boyle-Breaths - good and bad! (BOYLE-BREATH - Bk1). Bernard had just been made Acting Head at Roquefort High School, and Bernard0 had saved a teenage school suicide jumper off Roqueforts infamous 3Rs bridge, its Rogue-Rapids Roadbridge; but at the action-packed end of Bernards first term as a Depute Head (BOYLE-BREATH BREATHES - Bk2) the Highs Mr Damien Mortenson had resigned. Aaron Brown somehow had survived; but Damien had had enough, especially his having found out that school bully-chief Nikki Dedsons evil-mentor Cameron Mitchell was his own (previously sent for adoption) son! Quite why Dedsons helper-in-chief Aaron Brown had tried to kill himself was a secret known only to the Bernards and the boy himself. A new school term beckoned, so schoolchildren and their families did too (indeed Boyles half-Zero children Rino and Zea were now both 13 younger Zero girls catching up with 0 brothers in actual human age as well as the usual intelligence and behaviour). Bullying was continuing also; sances, ghosts and vampires, dream-haunting and clinical depression but murder? Social Workers, theyre always about somewhere, always for the best yeah? Immigrants and gypsies, angels and devils, tattooists and em referees? IEDs! (But what if that Time-shifting sniper Mortenson had been able to pull the trigger on Lady Di; what if the Confederates won the American Civil War...would Abraham Lincoln have become a Vampire Slayer? That Butterfly Effect theory, Ray, does it hold truth? Really, really?) Father Stephen OReilly, what of him...a Time-travelling priest? Bless me Father!! Remember HIM &HER? Mm well of course you do! What if Richard and Faith decided to get married and tell everyone everything in the end?! Nikki Dedson: the Bully extraordinaire? Yes, hes still alive, but hes in two worlds now. Is he still a bully? Of course he is, and in both! Boyle-Breath is a stinker, but with all those earthly pongs and perfumes at his beck and call he could, he had, and he would continue to help change noses, minds, lives, worlds! What was Mr Boyle to do first though? How was his Zeronian half Bernard0 to help? Where was a question: Earth &/or Zeronia? When was the subsequent problem...the Past, the Present; the Future?? Theyd beginat the End. Boyle-Breath Breathes BREATHTAKING! The Zeronian Bugle.

Book The Destroyer of Innocents

Download or read book The Destroyer of Innocents written by Dwight Neumann and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of THE DESTROYER OF INNOCENTS only turns to fiction in the last third of the novel when the author cannot find justice in the judicial system or in life itself for defendant Marco Barrera. Until that moment it presents a Spanish language interpreter's continuous struggle for emotional survival during a 2001 Los Angeles Superior Court death penalty trial. The author-interpreter must repeat into Spanish every word of testimony for the two defendants and thereby relive in stereo the horror of two of the most shocking domestic violence murders of California history. The only way the interpreter can keep his battered emotions at bay during testimony is by recalling his own delightful youth and adolescence. This defense mechanism eventually turns to rage against the defendant. It then can only be appeased by striking out against domestic violence. The death penalty, man's reason to live, defendant Marco Barrera's worst nightmares, and justice itself all cry out for a helping hand. The final resolution is a surreal attempt to desperately recover life and innocence and return them to their proper owners, mankind and children. The ultimate demand for true justice will constantly provoke your laughter, tears, and deepest thoughts.

Book excerpt: We just found out theres a plan to kill you! blurted out one man among the little group of Christians as they stumbled into the house of Soul (who later became known as Paul). The murderers have been hired, and the Damascus authorities have agreed to look the other way, put in another breathlessly. For a moment there was silence from Saul. Well, what are you going to do? Whispered the visitors fearfully. Saul thought joyfully of how Saint Stephen had been martyred for Christ. But he knew that was not Gods will for him just yet. Ill leave Damascus and escape to Jerusalem, he answered. Ill go after dark. Will you help me? But the watchmen will never let you pass the city gates. Theyve all been bribed by you enemies. Well bypass the city gates, answered Saul calmly. Just let me explain. What did Saul have in mind? Would it be dangerous? And would it work? This book tells what happened. It also describes how Paul won victories over the Devil, how he was mistaken for a god, and how he faced court trials, scourging, imprisonment, angry mobs and, finally, martyrdom for Christ. In short, this is the story of the many adventures in the life of the great Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s society couched in secularism, relativism, and general moral decline, many people may have lost a sense of sin and are struggling to embrace the importance of spiritual healing. Thankfully God always welcomes us back to experience God’s merciful and healing love. In an uplifting and deeply spiritual presentation, retired priest William Kremmell underscores a basic truth of Christian faith: that our God is a God of unconditional, all-embracing love and forgiveness for all people, revealed in Jesus. Throughout his study, Father Kremmell examines why God’s love is everlasting, why we are all sinners, the major reasons why Catholics do not approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the reasons why they should return to this grace-filled experience—all while helping believers find a healthy sense of sin, a new appreciation of the God who is love, and a better understanding of the Sacrament as a sign of God’s merciful presence and life-giving power in our lives. It’s All about God’s Love is a retired priest’s exploration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and why it needs to be renewed and restored as an integral element of the spiritual journey of today’s Catholic.

Book excerpt: Meditation on death, though it seems depressing to many, is essential for our Salvation! Death is the one journey every man must go through alone. It is the one thing that sobers us all and can set us on a more resolute path to Holiness. But this path only begins after facing the reality of death, for to avoid it only increases our fear. In this popular abridgment of his monumental Preparation for Death, St Alphonsus teaches us the proper attitude toward death, which is one of readiness, of always having our debts cleared. Each chapter is a short consideration with three points, easily understood by laity in all states of life. Each point is followed by meditations and prayers for perseverance in our efforts to lead good lives. To aid busy priests in their sermons, St Alphonsus purposely included texts from Scripture and passages from the Holy Fathers, personally selected by the Saint himself to touch the heart of every reader and listener. St Alphonsus shows us how death is, on the natural level, a great sorrow but, on the supernatural level, a great gift. Understanding it as a gift and implementing this knowledge in our lives is the lesson of each powerful meditation. This book is a wonderful way to enhance your Lenten devotions and gain a more profound gratitude for Christ's victory over Death and Hell through His crucifixion and Resurrection!

Book excerpt: “To live life without faith, without a patrimony to defend, without a struggle for truth, that is not living, but existing.” — Pier Giorgio Frassati Enter the heart of a passionate young man, who in his brief life reached the heights of adventure, friendship—and sanctity. Born to a wealthy family in Turin at the dawn of the 20th century, Pier Giorgio Frassati was good-looking, popular and athletic. He spent much of his youth climbing the rugged Italian Alps, disappearing into the clouds for days at a time. He was quick with a joke or a prank and enjoyed a good time. It seemed he was blessed with everything a young man could ask for. But he hungered for more. Despite coming from a family of such prestige, Pier Giorgio spent most days in the slums of Turin, visiting the poor and serving the sick. His love for Christ burned within him and brushed off on everyone he came into contact with – from lepers and orphans to college friends and political diplomats. He shared his Faith with kindness and charity, and defended it passionately against the evils of Fascism, even coming to blows with Mussolini’s thugs on numerous occasions. Pier Giorgio touched the lives of thousands, yet his high-society parents remained unmoved by the life he led as they frowned upon his religious practices and charitable work. Reaching them would be his last challenge, his final mountain to climb. To the Heights is an unforgettable novel about Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. Dig deeper than the biographical facts and discover the heart of a charismatic young man whose soul blazes brightly and uniquely among the host of heaven.

Book excerpt: LIGHT AND PEACE is a handbook for getting to Heaven a short and practical course in proper Christian living that covers all the important aspects of our religious duties. By far, the most telling feature of this little book is its immense common sense and good advice. LIGHT AND PEACE shows that perfecting one s self is not a complicated task, but one which requires good, practical thinking and a knowledge of the task at hand in short, Light on the path which is what this book is. Thereafter, the result of one s knowing where he is going spiritually and how best to achieve this end is Peace, that peace which Our Lord promised and which the world cannot give. LIGHT AND PEACE is a classic in Catholic spirituality. First written in 1795 in Italian, this work has passed through innumerable editions in Italian, French, German and English, the present one alone being the tenth in this format. In short, it is a summary of spiritual guidance for earnest Christians in the ordinary duties of life in the world. (Translator s Preface).
