Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Photographs of damage caused by natural hazards represent a unique form of data, which captures the transient consequences of Earth's periodic upheavals. They preserve a permanent record of the sometimes destructive effects that otherwise would be erased forever in cleanup and reconstruction operations. Photographs serve as a reminder to both the research scientist and the layman not only that such events can-and probably will-reoccur, but that we should be prepared to handle their consequences in the future"--Introduction.

Download or read book Media Bias Perspective and State Repression written by Christian Davenport and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines information reported within the media regarding the interaction between the Black Panther Party and government agents in the Bay Area of California (1967-1973). Christian Davenport argues that the geographic locale and political orientation of the newspaper influences how specific details are reported, including who starts and ends the conflict, who the Black Panthers target (government or non-government actors), and which part of the government responds (the police or court). Specifically, proximate and government-oriented sources provide one assessment of events, whereas proximate and dissident-oriented sources have another; both converge on specific aspects of the conflict. The methodological implications of the study are clear; Davenport's findings prove that in order to understand contentious events, it is crucial to understand who collects or distributes the information in order to comprehend who reportedly does what to whom as well as why.
Download or read book Wednesday s Child written by Frank Charles Dodson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one places 'Wednesday's Child' under the microscope it plainly reveals that Marcus Green was failing in the American way of life during the early 1970's, and chose to leave the Country of his birth , rather than to continue dwelling in the land which had brought about the demise of the three young black men whom he had known since childhood. Each of them had been drawn into the world of drugs and supposedly easy money , only to discover that all that really awaited them was an early ticket to the graveyard. Marcus choosing to span an ocean could not know what awaited him on the other side of that great expanse of water. Suddenly thrust into a culture as different as chalk is to cheese he had to adapt or perish. In a world where money, education, and social connections are enabled to bring even the most naive person safe harbor and protection, Marcus was bereft in every area. He truly became a child of providence and one dependent on the wind blowing in the right direction. This is as much about the sometimes invisible goodness of God, as it is about the visible kindness and open generosity of the elderly German woman who received him into her home, without an ulterior motive. Further to this tale of wonderment, it is also about innocent love, and how such love can be found with those outside of ones league, or realm of understanding, causing Marcus to challenge his personal strengths and weaknesses with a woman of unusual power, virtually on a daily basis. Also an underlying story of the sophisticated and worldly African American society living in Great Britain during the nineteen seventies, and how Marcus had to strap himself in for the jet set ride of his young life, which he had unexpectedly stumbled upon. Finally losing at love, yet gaining in prosperity and notoriety he is forced to return to the United States, ostensibly to bask in the limelight, but really to meet the true love of his life, and his real destiny as a human being.
Download or read book Berkeley written by Damian Ilodigwe and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berkeley is popular in the philosophical tradition as the philosopher who denied the existence of matter in favour of spiritual substance. His esse est percipi thesis is understandably seen as a recipe for subjective idealism. While there is a point to this reading of Berkeley, it remains to be seen whether it does justice to the full significance of Berkeley’s opposition to philosophical materialism. In this book, essentially a sympathetic reconstruction of Berkeley’s philosophy, Ilodigwe approaches Berkeley’s Immaterialism from the standpoint of the philosophical issues raised by the emergence of modern science in the seventeenth century. He argues that when approached in this manner, Berkeley’s opposition to philosophical materialism not only emerges as an attempt to overcome false abstractions, but it also becomes possible to make sense of his claimed alliance with common sense in his battle against philosophical materialism. While the realist portrait of Berkeley that emerges from this exercise is not free from difficulties, it arguably offers us a fuller conspectus of Berkeley’s philosophy of immaterialism.
