Book excerpt: The National Library of Greece (Ethnike Bibliothike tes Ellados) is one of the richest depositories of Byzantine musical manuscripts and is surpassed by its holdings in Greece only by the multitude of manuscripts found in the monasteries of Mount Athos. In spite of being such a rich archive, the National Library has never published a catalogue of its musical manuscripts - not all of which are Byzantine or Greek. It is the purpose of this catalogue to recover or, in some instances, to present for the first time the repertory of the musical sources of the library. This project has been twelve years in the making for Professor Diane Touliatos, involving the discovery and detailed cataloguing of all 241 Western, Ancient Greek, and Byzantine music manuscripts. Not all of these are from Athens or modern Greece, but also encompass Turkey, the Balkans, Italy, Cyprus, and parts of Western Europe. This variety underlines the importance of the catalogue for identifying composers, music and performance practice of different locales. The catalogue includes a detailed listing of the contents as written in the original language as well as the titles of compositions (and/or incipits) with composers, modal signatures, other attributions and information on performance practice. Each manuscript entry includes a commentary in English indicating important highlights and its significance. There is a substantive English checklist that summarizes the contents of each manuscript for non-Greek readers. A bibliography follows containing pertinent citations where the manuscript has been used in references. There is also a glossary that defines terms for the non-specialist. Examples of some of the manuscripts will be photographically displayed. The catalogue will enlighten musicologists and Byzantinists of the rich and varied holdings of some of the most important musical manuscripts in existence, and stimulate more interest and investigation of these sources. The library is the primary Hungarian public collection of Liszt's works and is among the world's most comprehensive. This book details the collection, classifying the works as (i) Liszt's compositions-autograph manuscripts, manuscript copies, proof-sheets or printed copies with additions and corrections in Liszt's hand (62 items); (ii) Liszt's compositions-printed or manuscript copies with autograph dedications (10 items); and (iii) Liszt's corrections and manuscript notes in and to works by other composers (6 items). Seventy-three music examples and 20 facsimile illustrations are also included. While other catalogues have been devoted to these Liszt compositions, this is the first to take full and accurate account of the collection to date. Thorough philological data of the documents, and descriptions and evaluations among the sources of the given composition are supplied. Maria Eckhardt's insightful additions concerning performance history and Liszt's relationships with dedicatees and fellow composers, based upon her previously published research, provide an enriched understanding of the compositions and their creator.

Hitherto this subject has been called 'the English Bach revival', but that is a misnomer. 'Revival' implies prior life, yet no reference to Bach or to his music is known to have been made in England during his lifetime (1685-1750). The book begins with a comprehensive chronology of the English Bach Awakening. Eight chapters follow, written by Dr Philip Olleson, Dr Yo Tomita and the editor, Michael Kassler, which treat particular parts of the Awakening and show how they developed. A focus of the book is the history of the manuscripts and the printed editions of Bach's '48' - The Well-tempered Clavier - in England at this time, and its culmination in the 'analysed' edition that Samuel Wesley and Charles Frederick Horn published in 1810-1813 and later revised. Wesley's multifaceted role in the Bach Awakening is detailed, as are the several efforts that were made to translate Forkel's biography of Bach into English. A chapter is devoted to A.F.C. Kollmann's endeavour to prove the regularity of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy, and the book concludes with a discussion of portraits of Bach in England before 1830.

Book excerpt: After decades of stagnation during the reign of his father, the 'Barracks King', the performing arts began to flourish in Berlin under Frederick the Great. Even before his coronation in 1740, the crown prince commenced recruitment of a group of musician-composers who were to form the basis of a brilliant court ensemble. Several composers, including C.P.E. Bach and the Graun brothers, wrote music for the viola da gamba, an instrument which was already becoming obsolete elsewhere. They were encouraged in this endeavour by the presence in the orchestra from 1741 of Ludwig Christian Hesse, one of the last gamba virtuosi, who was described in 1766 as 'unquestionably the finest gambist in Europe'. This study shows how the unique situation in Berlin produced the last major corpus of music written for the viola da gamba, and how the more virtuosic works were probably the result of close collaboration between Hesse and the Berlin School composers. The reader is also introduced to the more approachable pieces which were written and arranged for amateur viol players, including the king's nephew and ultimate successor, Frederick William II. O'Loghlin argues that the aesthetic circumstances which prevailed in Berlin brought forth a specific style that is reflected not only in the music for viola da gamba. Characteristics of this Berlin style are identified with reference to a broad selection of original written sources, many of which are hardly accessible to English-speaking readers. There is also a discussion of the rather contradictory reception history of the Berlin School and some of its composers. The book concludes with a complete thematic catalogue of the Berlin gamba music, with a listing of original manuscript sources and modern publications. The book will appeal to professional and amateur viola da gamba players as well as to scholars of eighteenth-century German music.

Book excerpt: The ensembles associated with monastery and parish churches were a very important element of musical life in Central Europe around the mid-eighteenth century. Yet the music created by early Classical composers, which constituted the core of their repertoire, remains poorly explored. Fr. Amandus Ivanschiz OSPPE (1727–1758) was one of such musicians, active in monasteries in Ranna, Wiener Neustadt, Rome, and Graz. Recent findings reveal that he died in 1758 at the young age of 31, which is much earlier than previously thought. Consequently, the dating of his compositions and their position in the context of the transformation of musical language in the middle of the eighteenth century needs to be revisited. This volume is the first to provide a critical evaluation of the attribution of works ascribed to Ivanschiz, which brought to light the true scope and reception of his oeuvre. The fact that there are nearly 300 copies of his works preserved in various archives across eleven European countries indicates that his music was readily performed and disseminated, and places Ivanschiz among the most popular monk-composers of his epoch.
