Though a work of fiction, this is one of several books that testify to renewed interest in the Khazars, a formerly nomadic people of Turkish stock whose ruling class embraced Judaism in or around 740 CE and established an empire stretching from the Crimea to the Aral Sea. By tradition, it was after a debate between representatives of Judaism, Christianity and Islamin which the Jewish arguments proved most convincingthat King Bulan made Khazaria Jewish. The faith that he adopted contained an admixture of paganism, however, and normative rabbinic Judaism was only introduced by his successors. Khazar merchants traded through_out the Near East; Khazar troops helped the Magyars conquer Hungary and joined the Byzantines in a war against Persia. Vague accounts of this remote but powerful empire heartened Jewish communities in Western Europe and inspired Judah Halevis famous exposition of Judaism, Sefer ha-Kuzari (see box). Tragically, from 965, the Khazar state declined and eventually collapsed under savage Russian and other attacks. "However, it is documented that Khazars, and a land called Khazaria, existed well into the early 13th century, probably in the area of Russian Dagestan and Chechnya," writes Monroe Kuttner, author of The Rabbi King, who obviously did a great deal of research. True enough, Khazars appear to have survived as an ethnic group until the Mongol invasion in 1237, and the last remnants were no doubt absorbed by Jewish, Karaite and Christian populations. Countess Adelle von Vetsera, Hashems ex-mistress, who lost her mind when Hashem married Angela, came to take back her love. The two women quarreled over Hashem. In one of her furious quarrels with Hashem, Angela rushed to her car. Her daughter, Aisha, rushed into the passenger seat, yelling at her not to drive. Angela ploughed the car right into a trailer. Angela was the only survivor in the car, and Aisha died. Angela faced charges of being drunk behind the wheel and killing her daughter. She was sentenced to three years in prison. Hashem refused to live with Angela any longer and returned to his first love, Adele. Adele gave birth to a baby girl and called her Aisha to please Hashem. Adele died from cancer. Hashem, however, refused to return to Angela, and being long forsaken made her emotional status grow rapidly worse. Years of abandonment passed, and Hashem returned to Angela in the end on the condition that she must behave and stop uttering dirty words. She accepted wholeheartedly. But did she fulfill her promise? This is what the novel tells.

The outcome of all her endeavours was the realisation that for their daughter to have a successful and healthy life she needed a bone marrow transplant. Finding a suitably Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) matching donor could be a difficult and extremely costly exercise for the family. Throughout these dark days had come a glimmer of hope for Aisha to save her daughter but the option available to her and Arko, her husband, was fraught with fear and trepidation.
