Book excerpt: "The journals are those of a girl I once knew - who had cancer and wrote about her experiences. She wanted to share her story, in a way that would have helped her: in a book about having cancer as a teen - written by a teen who experienced it. She wasn't lost in battle, but she's been gone a long time; and I haven't been able to forget her, or let her go. The story seems unfamiliar, and yet I know it by heart. It feels like yesterday, but seems like a lifetime ago. It's the story I never wrote - because it was already written; and at the heart of it is my journey with cancer: a muse, a curse, and a blessing. I've read the book before, but I never closed the first chapter: a book of journals - written by a girl who had cancer." Cancer is a part of my story, and being a survivor is part of my identity, but it is not my entire identity as I felt it was when I was younger. At the end of my second treatment, I decided I was going to write my story and publish it. I even thought of the perfect title for my book: Two-Timed: An Adolescent Cancer Memoir. I thought of it because I felt two-timed by my own body, whose very defense system had attacked itself, and it had happened to me twice. But I didn't write the story. The years went by, and I decided I could not very well write an "adolescent memoir" when I was well into my twenties, but I still had my journals - all the journals. Several more years elapsed until now - twenty three years after the journey began - I am finally "writing" the story.

Book Two Infinities

Download or read book Two Infinities written by Leslie Belitz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kaitlyn entered our world on May 22, 2012. I watched her lock eyes with her mother, and the two souls bonded in a familiar and forever love. Her eyes were wide open, proving her to be an alert child, ready to take on the challenges of life. As her grandmother, I watched Kaitlyn excel in all her childhood developmental milestones. When Kaitlyn approached five years old, she was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumor in her brain stem referred to as DIPG. This book is a tribute to her short and meaningful life. It highlights the final seven months of her physical existence as we celebrated every day with her and prepared for her death. It includes “Kaitlyn Gems,” the words I recall her saying, which proved she was a wise soul. The book validates that a short life, when filled with love, is meaningful.

For teenagers and young adults, it presents a unique challenge both socially and emotionally. You strive for independence, but cancer leaves you completely dependent on those around you. At an age when you want nothing but to be with your peers, isolation resulting from a compromised immune system leaves you starving for social contact. When you should be able to start setting goals for the future, you are confronted with the possibility of having no future at all. This all makes staying positive very difficult. Through her own experiences as a two-time cancer survivor, and previous teen cancer patient who faced a forty percent chance of survival, Clarissa Schilstra has learned a great deal about all of these challenges and how to cope with them. In the pages of this book, she shares those stories and strategies, in an effort to provide a guide through the emotional roller coaster that is cancer treatment and life as a cancer survivor. A foreword by Lori Wiener, PhD, DCSW, FAPOS is included.

Book excerpt: A breast cancer diagnosis at forty-nine forces Christine Shields Corrigan, a wife, mom, and meticulous list-maker, to confront her deepest fears of illness, death, and loss of control as she struggles to face cancer again. From the discovery of a "junky" cyst, to chemotherapy and surgery, sleepless nights filled with rosaries and "what ifs," and shifting family dynamics, her adult experience mirrors her teen bout with Hodgkin's lymphoma, with one exception-she no longer has parents keeping her in the dark. With the ghosts of cancer past hovering around her, Chris falls into the same overprotective traps her taciturn Irish-Catholic parents created, striving to keep her family's life "normal," when it is anything but, and soldiering through on her own, until a neighbor's unexpected advice and gift move her to accept others' help. With fierce honesty, poignant reflection, and good humor, Chris shares a journey filled with sorrow, grace, forgiveness, and resilience, as she wends her way through cancer for the second time. Again offers practical guidance and hope to individuals that they have the strength to forge a path beyond a diagnosis.

I had no information about Cancer during my treatment; it was all aimed at adults and I was a teenager who didn't understand most of what happened. So I wrote this book. I was a teenager when I wrote, when I had Cancer and I wanted this to be an information, honest account of what it was really like to have Cancer and go through the treatment....from a teenager's perspective.

Book Wait Time

  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Wait Time written by Kenneth Sherman and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When poet and essayist Kenneth Sherman was diagnosed with cancer, he began keeping a notebook of observations that blossomed into this powerful memoir. With incisive and evocative language, Sherman presents a clear-eyed view of what the cancer patient feels and thinks. His narrative voice is personal but not confessional, practical but not cold, thoughtful and searching but not self-pitying or self-absorbed. The author’s wait time for surgery on a malignant tumour was exceptionally long and riddled with bureaucratic bumbling; thus he asks our health-care providers and administrators if our system cannot be made efficient and more humane. While he is honest about what is good and bad in our system, he is not stridently political or given to directing blame. His narrative is interwoven with engaging ruminations on the meaning of illness in society, and is peppered with references to other writers’ thoughts on the subject. A widely published poet, Sherman helps the reader understand the deep connection between disease and creativity—the ways in which we write out of our suffering. Wait Time will be of special interest to anyone facing a serious illness as well as to health-care providers, social workers, and psychologists working in the field. Its thoughtful observations on health, life priorities, time, and mortality will make it of interest to all readers.

Book excerpt: A two-time cancer survivor, the author of this frank, intimate, and lively memoir has been healthy for years when the disease suddenly returns. An out-of-the-blue pain takes her breath away and she is literally knocked off her feet; her life is turned upside down. Andrea Cleghorn's cancer has metatasized this time around, an embolism causing a firestorm in her body and havoc with her personal life. Does she choose cautious treatment that will slow the cancer's progression or go with the "total abdominal extravaganza," the aggressive surgery that comes with a long recuperation and the risk of serious complications? Doctors disagree on the best strategy: Will it or will it not be the Whipple? A journalist, Cleghorn's writing combines accurate reporting with a colorful sense of story and anecdotes that prove "you can't make this stuff up." The reader is drawn into an adventure story of a most unusual kind as she copes with one pothole after another on the road to recovery. Though dealing with cancer is at the center of the story, it is a compelling tale of the value of community, not only accepting help but learning how to ask for it. The reader gets to know the people in the author's new-normal life, from the members of a remarkable medical community as well as her disparate collection of extremely generous, loyal, very funny friends. These women coalesce into an unstoppable army that cares for, protects and encourages her, forming a team that helps her survive and eventually thrive. Not for a minute minimizing the seriousness of the circumstances, the resiliency and the no-matter-what humor of Cleghorn's life force fill every page of this engaging memoir.

Examining texts from a diverse range of authors such as Leo Tolstoy, Edith Wharton and Alice Munro, and filmmakers such as Ingmar Bergman and Michael Haneke, it addresses questions such as why caregiving is a dangerous activity, the ethical problems of writing about caregiving, the challenges of reading about caregiving, and why caregiving is so important.
