This holy man of God went forth and most Openly and loudly proclaimed to all men that the Messiah's advent was at hand. And when he made his appearance in public, John pointed him out with his very finger, as 'the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.' And this is not all. Book The Doctrines of Grace

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Montgomery Boice

Download or read book The Doctrines of Grace written by James Montgomery Boice and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that we live in an age of weak theology and casual Christianity. We have substituted intuition for truth, feeling for belief and immediate gratification for enduring hope. Evangelicalism desperately needs to return to the doctrines that once before reformed the world: radical depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, efficacious grace and persevering grace. James Boice and Philip Ryken not only provide a compelling exposition on these doctrines of grace, but also look briefly at their historical impact. The authors leave no doubt that the church suffers when these foundational truths are neglected and that she must return to a Christianity that is practical-minded, kind-hearted, and most importantly, biblically based.

Book Predestination and Preaching in Genevan Theology from Calvin to Pictet

Download or read book Predestination and Preaching in Genevan Theology from Calvin to Pictet written by Pieter L. Rouwendal and published by Summum Academic. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the conclusions of recent research, that predestination was no central dogma to, and did not affect the method of reformed theology, this study investigates the question of if and how the doctrine of predestination affected the ideas and practice of preaching. The relation of predestination and covenant, congregation, atonement, faith etc. are researched in the theology and sermons of John Calvin, Theodore Beza, John Diodati, and Theodore Tronchin, Francis Turretin, and Benedict Pictet. This study shows that in Genevan Reformed Theology from Calvin to Pictet, predestination and the external call were inseparably connected, but that the doctrine of predestination neither dominated the content nor restricted the address of the external call.

Book An Old Testament Theology

Download or read book An Old Testament Theology written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament is more than a religious history of the nation of Israel. It is more than a portrait gallery of heroes of the faith. It is even more than a theological and prophetic backdrop to the New Testament. Beyond these, the Old Testament is inspired revelation of the very nature, character, and works of God. As renowned Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke writes in the preface of this book, the Old Testament’s every sentence is “fraught with theology, worthy of reflection.” This book is the result of decades of reflection informed by an extensive knowledge of the Hebrew language, the best of critical scholarship, a deep understanding of both the content and spirit of the Old Testament, and a thoroughly evangelical conviction. Taking a narrative, chronological approach to the text, Waltke employs rhetorical criticism to illuminate the theologies of the biblical narrators. Through careful study, he shows that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the “breaking in of the kingdom of God.” This theme helps the reader better understand not only the Old Testament, but also the New Testament, the continuity of the entire Bible, and ultimately, God himself.

Book Advent in St Paul s Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Advent in St Paul s Vol 1 of 2 written by Henry Parry Liddon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advent in St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 2: Sermons Bearing Chiefly on the Two Comings of Our Lord When, three years ago, the author published some sermons preached in St. Paul's during the Easter Season, it was suggested that something of the same kind might be attempted for other portions of the Christian year. The present publication, accordingly, is devoted to the two great truths which the Church of Christ proposes for our consideration during Advent; our Lord's First Coming among men as the Son of a virgin-mother, and His Second Coming in the clouds of heaven to judge the living and the dead. A. Third volume should follow, consecrated to the festival of Christmas and to the close of the civil year. In these two volumes there has been no attempt to arrange the sermons on any other principle than that of the order in which they were preached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suk Yu Chan provides a revisit of John Calvin's interpretation of the doctrine of divine providence and builds upon a vast repository of quality research conducted by previous Reformation scholars. The author adopts a historical approach to explore Calvin's works from 1534–1559, and argues that from 1534–1541, Calvin used the image of the fountain to portray God as the source of everything, who has power to preserve and give life to all creatures on earth. Between the Latin edition of the Institutes in 1539 and the French translation of that work in 1541, Calvin was indecisive about the definition of special providence, articulating a fitful relationship between providence and soteriology in these two texts. In 1552, Calvin gradually ceased using the image of the fountain to portray God as the source of everything, and he also delivered three definitions of divine providence: general providence, special providence, and the very presence of God. Based on the theological understanding of divine providence which he had developed from 1534–1552, Calvin presented his exegesis on the Book of Job and the Book of Psalms through his sermons and commentaries. Furthermore, Calvin also discussed the importance of the human role in God's providence. While Calvin's theological understanding of God's providence was inherited by his successor, Theodore Beza, Beza applied it differently in his exegesis on the Book of Job. From 1534–1559, Calvin formulated his biblical doctrine of divine providence, articulating that divine providence is heavenly providence which is comprised of eternal predestination and divine preservation.
