Book Two Point Boundary Value Problems Lower and Upper Solutions

Download or read book Two Point Boundary Value Problems Lower and Upper Solutions written by C. De Coster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-03-21 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the method of lower and upper solutions for ordinary differential equations. This method is known to be both easy and powerful to solve second order boundary value problems. Besides an extensive introduction to the method, the first half of the book describes some recent and more involved results on this subject. These concern the combined use of the method with degree theory, with variational methods and positive operators. The second half of the book concerns applications. This part exemplifies the method and provides the reader with a fairly large introduction to the problematic of boundary value problems. Although the book concerns mainly ordinary differential equations, some attention is given to other settings such as partial differential equations or functional differential equations. A detailed history of the problem is described in the introduction.· Presents the fundamental features of the method· Construction of lower and upper solutions in problems· Working applications and illustrated theorems by examples· Description of the history of the method and Bibliographical notes

Book Eigenvalues and Completeness for Regular and Simply Irregular Two Point Differential Operators

Download or read book Eigenvalues and Completeness for Regular and Simply Irregular Two Point Differential Operators written by John Locker and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph the author develops the spectral theory for an $n$th order two-point differential operator $L$ in the Hilbert space $L2[0,1]$, where $L$ is determined by an $n$th order formal differential operator $\ell$ having variable coefficients and by $n$ linearly independent boundary values $B 1, \ldots, B n$. Using the Birkhoff approximate solutions of the differential equation $(\rhon I - \ell)u = 0$, the differential operator $L$ is classified as belonging to one of threepossible classes: regular, simply irregular, or degenerate irregular. For the regular and simply irregular classes, the author develops asymptotic expansions of solutions of the differential equation $(\rhon I - \ell)u = 0$, constructs the characteristic determinant and Green's function, characterizes the eigenvalues and the corresponding algebraic multiplicities and ascents, and shows that the generalized eigenfunctions of $L$ are complete in $L2[0,1]$. He also gives examples of degenerate irregular differential operators illustrating some of the unusual features of this class.

Book Applied RVE Reconstruction and Homogenization of Heterogeneous Materials

Download or read book Applied RVE Reconstruction and Homogenization of Heterogeneous Materials written by Yves Rémond and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied RVE Reconstruction and Homogenization of Heterogeneous Materials Statistical correlation functions are a well-known class of statistical descriptors that can be used to describe the morphology and the microstructure-properties relationship. A comprehensive study has been performed for the use of these correlation functions for the reconstruction and homogenization in nanocomposite materials. Correlation functions are measured from different techniques such as microscopy (SEM or TEM), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and can be generated through Monte Carlo simulations. In this book, different experimental techniques such as SAXS and image processing are presented, which are used to measure two-point correlation function correlation for multi-phase polymer composites. Higher order correlation functions must be calculated or measured to increase the precision of the statistical continuum approach. To achieve this aim, a new approximation methodology is utilized to obtain N-point correlation functions for multiphase heterogeneous materials. The two-point functions measured by different techniques have been exploited to reconstruct the microstructure of heterogeneous media. Statistical continuum theory is used to predict the effective thermal conductivity and elastic modulus of polymer composites. N-point probability functions as statistical descriptors of inclusions have been exploited to solve strong contrast homogenization for effective thermal conductivity and elastic modulus properties of heterogeneous materials. Finally, reconstructed microstructure is used to calculate effective properties and damage modeling of heterogeneous materials.
