Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two years ago, at the 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics held here in Snowbird, the authors presented WA80 limits on direct photon production in 200-GeV 32S + Au collisions. It was found that the results were consistent (within 1[sigma]) with the absence of an excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of [pi]° and [eta] mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. They are in the process of finalizing the direct-photon production results from collisions of lead nuclei at 158 GeV/nucleon. The author briefly discusses the status of the analysis and gives some preliminary results at the end of this talk. However, most of this presentation is concerned with a very different aspect of the photon measurements: distributions of neutral pions. In contrast to direct photons which probe initial collision conditions, hadrons, such as neutral pions, interact strongly and decouple late in the reaction evolution and, thus, provide information concerning the system at freeze out. Transverse momentum spectra at low and intermediate p{sub T} relate to thermodynamic and hydrodynamic descriptions of the hot, dense systems. In addition, the high-p{sub T} region reflects the hard-scattering regime and may help one understand initial-state particle production by forming a bridge to proton-proton and proton-nucleus results. It follows that it is essential that the [pi]° measurements cover a large p{sub T} range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a new measurement of the cross section for the process ee/sup −/ → e+e/sup /minus//?+?/sup /minus// at center-of-mass energy 29 GeV for invariant pion pair masses M/sub /phi//phi// between 350 MeV/c2 and 3.5 GeV/c2. For M/sub /pi//pi// above 2.1 GeV/c2, we find approximate agreement with the hard-scattering prediction of Brodsky and Lepage. In the low mass region, we observe the f2(1270), and measure its radiative width to be 3.15 /plus minus/ .04 /plus minus/ .39 keV. We also observe an enhancement in the /pi//sup +//pi//sup /minus// spectrum near 1 GeV. We hypothesize that it is the f0(975) and determine it's radiative width to be 0.29 /plus minus/ .07 /plus minus/ .12 keV. 48 refs.

Book Photon photon Collisions 9th International Workshop On Photon photon Collisions

Download or read book Photon photon Collisions 9th International Workshop On Photon photon Collisions written by D O Caldwell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-12-31 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings blend current and future two-photon physics. Developments since the last Photon-Photon Workshop four years ago are summarized, and the future of the field is projected, not only at existing accelerators, but also at heavy-ion colliders B-factories, and especially linear colliders with back-scattered laser beams.

Book Two photon Physics From Da ne To Lep200 And Beyond

Download or read book Two photon Physics From Da ne To Lep200 And Beyond written by F Kapusta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-12-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-photon physics, i.e. photon-photon collisions in electron-positron colliders, a relatively new field in elementary particle physics, has become very popular in the last 20 years. Many experiments have been performed in this field, and the theoretical implications (in particular in quantum chromodynamics) have been studied in much detail. Nine international workshops devoted to two-photon physics have taken place between 1973 and 1992.This meeting was particularly timely, since a new generation of electron-positron colliders is presently being built or planned. These colliders will involve a large spectrum of beam energies, but their common characteristics should be a high particle flux (luminosity). This should allow for measuring many new phenomena as well as for studying known processes with much higher precision than before. Particularly promising is the prospect of building a dedicated high-energy photon collider; this should become possible using a laser technique allowing for the “conversion” of a linear electron beam into a photon beam.Over 60 physicists (both experimentalists and theorists), mainly from European countries (France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Russia, as well as Sweden and Switzerland), discussed these new possibilities at the above meeting. Over 30 talks were presented and many extended debates took place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports on all aspects of high energy photon interactions using both photon and proton targets. Significant new results from the LEP and HERA experiments as well as from CLEO II and BELLE are presented. These data are confronted with diverse theoretical models. In particular, predictions of QCD in both the perturbative and the non-perturbative sector are extensively discussed. The prospects for gamma-gamma physics at future high energy colliders are also reviewed. In total 72 papers are collected. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: ? Book Two photon Process and Anomalous Electron pair Production in pi p Collisions

Download or read book Two photon Process and Anomalous Electron pair Production in pi p Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-photon mechanism for lepton-pair production is calculated in a nonconventional way by treating the relative pion-nucleon motion in the classical limit. The results are compared with existing data for anomalous ee/sup /minus// pairs produced in the collision of 16 GeV/c pions with protons. The results for differential cross sections as a function of the invariant pair mass, Feynman x, and transverse momentum are found to be in reasonable agreement with the data. The dominant piece of the cross section arises from the magnetic, spin-flip part of the nucleon current. 14 refs., 4 figs.
